which pants, a jong question

So my budget ronin pants lasted 20 days. They will soon be going back to backcountry for exploding and I will be getting something worth the money.

Im looking for shell pants, likely a hardshell, that is unless theres a water/wind proof softshell good for typical inbounds skiing and OB skinning and hiking.
I like my pants loose, not baggy, not tight. im not a park rat and im not a rando dweeb

Im on a budget, so arc'teryx is out.
Patagonia is my top brand, but im having trouble finding stores who carry them to try them on.
I tried on the sidewall pants and found the med's too tight and the larges too big. The alpine and backcountry guide pants sound good, but theyre softshells and seem to not be as storm proof as a hardshell.

I also tried on the cloudveil koven. The meds were WAY too tight and the larges were 5" too long.

does anyone have any recomendations? I want to try them on before buying them, and Im getting tired of exchanging things on backcountry.

i am really really stoked on my flylow chemical pants. very durable, very wind/water proof, great venting. all around really solid stuff. they fit true to size, not heard any of the homies disapointed in the fit.

yeah, i think the large would fit you right.

the drop kick is really nice, but is a softshell.

I am an inch taller but same weight and the large fits great.

I have both the original Dropkick and the Dropkick Pro (haven't spent a ton of time in the Pros)

They are very nice pants, but they are softshells. Very burly for softshells - wind proof and very nearly water-proof. But water will get through when sitting on a chair covered in wet snow or the like (wouldn't be my choice for the northwest, but they're great in CO). Also, they are heavy - the Chemical is lighter.

I'm totally satisfied with my Dropkicks, but if I was buying new, I'd get the Chemical.

If you're not anti-North Face, their Freedom pants should fit you in a med, maybe a lg if you've got super-beefy thighs/ass. I'm 5'10", 180 and wear a 31/31 pants, and I wear the med. Fit me like a dream.

They're almost always on sale at Backcountry.

anyone know about the warranty policy for flylow? I cant find anything so is it safe to assume theyre a small company like pmgear that helps out with issues?

Not sure what the official policy is, but yes, they will help you out if you have problems.
A buddy of mine who has a tendency to destroy things got 300+ days out of his Dropkicks before the cuff finally ripped open. You'll have a tough time killing Flylow pants.

My Columbia ski pants (with OMNI-TECH waterproof, breathable, blah, blah) have been dry and durable in Whistler's hot at the top, cold at the bottom and raining in the middle weather. Who'da guessed.

Flylow warranty is fantastic. My original dropkicks pockets started to fall apart last season. I gave them to Dan (the owner) first hand when he was up here for a show. I had a new pair in my hands within a week. Great guy and a solid company. I believe Dan posts here from time to time as well.

My old man got me a pair of northface pants for xmas. I've skied in them in rain now and they are remarkably waterproof. Plus i don't think they broke the bank. The other cool thing about them is that you can get them in three lengths for every size I think which is rad because I have a huge ass and thighs, but relatively short legs. Good pants for sure.

I tried on the large freedom's today at EMS, theyre huge. They didnt have any mediums.
As long as BC.com takes back my ronin shit pants im gonna get the chemical pants.

Im right on the med/large cusp for many brands, any thoughts on the chemical sizing? I dont mind returning them, but after buying them, retuning them, and shipping a new pair its $30 in shipping. Just trying to save money

Flylow Chemical Pant is the way to go. Just got a pair.

Do not buy the Freedom Pant. They suck goat balls and will fall apart in about a year. Plus, they are not a true shell pant since they are lightly insulated.

Have about 7 days on my new Westcomb Phantom bibs. VERY happy so far.

May be too much dinero but I have the MH Verticle pants and really like them, light, breathable and fabric seems tough too. Great features and a good fit I have the mediums and wear a 32x32 pant normally. Great shell i paid $280 on BC.com using 20% code. Probsbly not a relaxed enugh fit for you. I do have enough room to layer nicely.

I have a pair of the Patagonia Primo pants from about three years ago (back when they were Gore Tex) and they have been the most bomber pants ever, some crampon holes are the only wear. Tried to find the exact same pants again, and it has proved impossible. Ended up with Cloudveil RPK that I've been fairly happy with so far. Have several friends that very much like the Chemicals, I think that is the best choice if going DWR.

Does anybody here have eider boost experience. I scored a pair but trying tpo decide wether I should keep them. They have a bit of insulation and that worries me for I've never had an insulated pair before. All my other eider gear has killed so I know they are durable.

Been looking at the chemical pants myslef and that will be the pair I get if I don't keep the boosts.

Sounds like you're and Eider XL size-wise. Solid gear, but I'm as biased as Marshal. ;)

Re. Boost... well, they're gonna be warmer than a shell, that's for sure. I normally roll with padded shorts, light long underwear and shells, but I switched to the Eider Smurf (heavy mesh lining) from my normal 3l stuff and I found I can now go w/o the long underwear. I prefer my old system for the flexibility of layering (these might get warm in the spring!) but for now it's no big deal.

I have the exact same pants. Energizer bunnies, with some new cordura armor courtesy of Patagonia's warranty dept.

I also have some Flylow pants courtesy of the raffle at the San Francisco showing of Hand Cut. They were XLs, but Dan exchanged them for mediums. Pretty sure they're the Chemical pants. They're the only "ski pants" I've ever seen that compare to Patagonia's Primos. Burly as shit. They have inner and outer thigh vents too, so they'll be great for touring if you want a do-it-all pant.

I'm 6'1" 165 (32x32), and the medium fits me well. They're reasonably baggy to begin with.
