Remember to start getting those permits in. If you're applying for the Salt, it's due at the office by next Thurs.
Most others are the end of the month...
So.... what are y'all applying for?
For me:
Salt, San Juan, Green, and 3 Rivers.

Doin the Grand daddy of em all in about 50 days. Applied for the Rogue, four rivers and maybe the San Juan, maybe deso/gray too.
I got to do the San Juan,,labyrinth,Yampa and Lodore last year so need to focus my resources on somethin different. Not that i'd say no to either of those again....
Also doing the grand at the same time(my permit, bitch)...so the only permit i applied for was the 4rivers...more like two. Gonna do a Cataract though. Hopefully be on his^ Rogue permit. I wanna make it up to do some more NW stuff this year.
Can anybody tell me if the Illinois R. is permitted so I dont strain myself looking it up?
MF and Main Salmon! Gotta launch on 6/28! The 29th is the BIG 3-0 for me and I want to send it on a river trip.
Good luck, I tried the same date for the same thing and failed...high demand due to the fourth and predicted good flow. Have had horrible luck with the 4 rivers ( except got the Snake one year). Trying for the Main Salmon this year, maybe mid July. Maybe Lodore as well.
just got, errr, 4/20....2012 for the Grand. Yeah, few years out, but a great launch date for so many reasons...
Happy bday in advance Conundude!!
Close, the 'adaptive management strategy' they've been doing for us old farts who were on the old list from wayback, like '95...
Not sure if i made the best move, could have had a lot of extra chances, or cancellations, but need some lead time, and really like that time of year...
Tossed my hat in the ring for Middle Fork and Selway Both in late May and early June. I may not apply for the grand this year though as I prob couldn
't go anyway.
congrats tye!
i put in for the 4 rivers... all mid-july launches when the water should be family-friendly.
speaking of which, can anyone suggest some beta on the san juan in late march? is it worth doing the whole thing or can the sand island - mexican hat stretch be skipped? if we skipped, it would mean basically a more leisurely trip on the rest of the river. if we should do the whole thing, is 5 nites/6 days enough for a leisurely pace? we'd want to let the kids sleep in on the cold march mornings and get camp setup early enough to enjoy a pre-dinner pbr.
Yeah, you can easily skip the Sand Island section and use the put-in at Mexican Hat. A lot of folks do this. I prefer doing the whole thing.(SI to clay hills). You can easily do the float beneath Mexican Hat in five days..or four or even three
No permit necessary. Very little traffic, but ridiculously beautiful. So much better than the Rogue you really can't compare. I did it over memorial day weekend last year, which is later than you can usually run it, and it was as low as I would ever go back in there with a raft, I think 600-700ish. At that flow my fully-loaded 14' oar boat with passengers was a hell of a lot of work. Three full days, with day two and Green Wall getting my full attention. Slept well that night.
Definitely do it, but don't wait for summer. I want over 1000 before I go back in there.

its threads like this that remind me how much I love Alaska
Yeah, who'd want to boat the Grand or the Middle Fork when you got the Tat.......uh,me.
Mmmmm.... Boating season.
The stretch above mexican hat should not be skipped it has the best ruins, pictographs and petroglyphs. Butler wash is super sweet. I usually do a layover day in the upper stretch because of the super good hiking opps. if you can go see the poncho house ruin it is really nice. The san jaun doesn.t have rapids but has very good consistant drop. So the river flows along at a fairly fast pace. Prolly can do 20 miles in 4 to 5 hours no problem.
Just a feeler. I'm putting in for a San Juan during Labor day. Anyone interested?
This is extortion:
4230 apps x $15 = $63,450Quote:
Dinosaur 2009 High Use Boating Lottery Application
2009 Fee Schedule
$15.00 Application Fee
$185.00 Multi-Day Permit Fee
300 launches x $185 = $55,500
^^^ and you can only pick one river and launch date!
Skibum, I'm down for the SJ if you score one. I'm putting in for some time around mid July.
Hmmm I'll throw in for one, see what happens.
Filled out my San Juany permit app today. Hopefully i can get two yrs in a row. Shooting for early June, third choice was july 5. Fingers crossed. It's nice having the good flows in june,it's got a fast current. But its also nice having the low water in July-when the waters a nice green.
I have only done SJ in March. Cold, but not compared to Wyoming. What do you veterans think for a date? Maybe we can get at least one permit with all of us applying. I was thinking later in the year, because at the time I thought I was going to be employed at my current job, and I would have enough buffer time between winter and then to justify a week off. Now, the job is going to hell, so I will probably be either unemployed, or working somewhere in Colorado/Utah.
One of the best campsites I've had was on a sandbar island in the middle of the Chitina on a kennicott-copper trip. At least a quarter mile to shore on either side, probably 250k cfs, 34 degree glacial silt, and a clear, 100 degree pool right in the middle of the island. Higher waters had settled and 20-hour days of sun kept the pool hot.
And then got a driftwood fire going probably 30 feet high.
No firepans in AK.
How much current will brown bears try to swim across?
