Pieps DSP harness question ?

My local shop has the Pieps Freeride in stock, but will have to special order the DSP if I decide to go with that model.

The Freeride they have has a super nice harness, the salesman says he is "pretty sure" the DSP will come with the same harness.

I almost feel like getting the Freeride just for the nice harness. Even though it only has one antenna, it was really easy to use. We did some practice searches in the store, and the single-antenna Freeride zoomed right in.

But I feel like I owe it to my buddies to get the 3-antenna DSP. Does anyone know if it comes with the super-nice harness ?

(Pieps website shows the harness on the Freeride, but not with the DSP)

It's a piece of shit but I would still get a 3 antenna beacon.

Personally, I put my DSP in a zipped pocket.

^^^^^ Wow. That is a super cheap looking harness. Funny that the $199 Freeride comes with a trick harness, and the $450 DSP has that shitty thing.

The DSP plastic harness works just fine. Its easy to wear and I've not had any problems over the past season. Its hardly a deal breaker.

new dsp v6.2 ships with a different harness then ^^. zippered pouch style rig that is the same as that shown on the pieps website for the freeride. do your bros a favor and get the dsp.

The original DSP harness was awesome; I know cause I have one. It's a very thick cordura I think. I have no idea why they changed it.

Agreed on the old harness. Much nicer than that plastic one. However, the last thing in the world that would break the deal in buying a DSP would be the harness. Way to sweet of a beacon to even think about that. The harness isn't the part of the beacon that save lives and gives peace of mind.

I own the old harness; I bought a DSP with the new harness for my father. The difference between them isn't that big, imho

the 3 antenna really shines in deep burials and multiples. i'm not too familiar with the freeride but the dsp is a good unit. another one you might want to look at is the pulse. try as many as you can in the field before you make your purchase. i think you will be happier using the 3 antenna models.

and yes they are changing the harness on the dsp for this season.

A third antenna helps with pinpointing -- it has no relevance to multiple burials, i.e., the D3, Patroller/X1, and Tracker2 have three antennas yet no marking/masking for multiple burials, while the latest version of the ARVA A.D.vanced has only two antennas yet has a marking/masking feature for multiple burials.
The Ortovox S1, Barryvox Pulse, Pieps DSP, and ARVA 3 Axes all have both three antennas and marking/masking.

thanks jonathan, i knew the ones i've dealt with are better with the multiples but i guess i correlated the marking capability with the 3rd antenna. i need to get back into the tech aspect of the newer technology.

Anyone know where I can buy (online) one of the new Pieps harnesses? I've got a DSP and don't particularly like the harness, the new one looks sweet.

I looked on the Pieps website but didn't see a way to buy one.

But I did look over their 'history of the Pieps' on the website and noted that my first beacon was the original red 2275Hz Pieps 1 from 1975 which I've still got in a junk box somewhere.... I think it still works.

It sure brings back memories of ski trips on narrow skis and wool clothing and frozen toes :-) .....

Seems like the only new features for 6.2 seem are for . . . enhanced functionality only with regards for deactivation via iProbe?

Trigger pulled: Pieps DSP special-ordered today from my local shop.

Got mine a couple of weeks go. Sickness. My first non-rental probe. It was between the Pieps DSP and the Mammut Barryvox Pulse. After a lot of research and a personal in-shop test of each, I decided on the DSP.

works pretty well, keeps the signal near your head too. No harder to access quickly than the shitty harness. IMO

i have found that the new harness makes it a little harder to actually get the beacon out. Also, a big difference between a 1 and 3 antennae beacon is going to be in the range that you get a signal at. the 3 does not need orientation to find the flux line if the beacon is buried in a vertical postion, where a 1 or 2 antennae does, and therefor will not give you the best signal at the advertised distance.....

good call on the DSP. I love mine. I really don't mind the old harness at all, but the new one does come with a pen holder.

Although admitedly I have not examined that orientation in my several hundred range test trials, I am pretty sure that statement is incorrect, as the third antenna plays no role in initial signal acquisition.

try it....

i only did about 75 trials and came up with some very different results for average/consistent distance with the freeride vs the dsp when the beacon was vertical vs horizontal. I was using both a dsp and a tracker as my control beacon, and was playing around with the freeride, the dsp, and the tracker as my search beacons....

i set all beacons both horizontally and vertically and tested range... i'm not trying to argue with you, i'm just saying what I got....

i also wish my computer didn't get corrupted, because my whole study is now gone, so i cannot send it to you to show you my results...

i would be interested to see if you got different results depending on beacon orientation....

Did you mean to say that your comparison search beacons were only the DSP vs Freeride, or instead the DSP vs Freeride vs Tracker?
If the only the former two beacons, then that doesn't mean much, since so far in my trials the Freeride has registered the worst range of any beacon I've ever tested.

i used all three for beacons emitting signals. i used all three for searching, for each of them (ie, freeride emitting, searching with all three... etc) The difference between distances on the tracker and the DSP were minimal, but the freeride was way low for the distances no matter which beacon was emitting. I could get the freeride to be at about 55m, but i would have to get the orientation of the search beacon had to be just right. overall, the freeride was the worst, but the tracker and the dsp were pretty consistent....

Right, exactly what I would expect -- a 3rd antenna makes no difference for initial signal acquisition range with respect to vertical orientation (although the DSP is intentionally designed to minimize range degredation with respect to coupling, and succeeds at that goal), and the Freeride has very poor range.

yeah, my numbers were a little more consistent with the DSP on the higher end, but there wasn't really a significant difference....

what it came down to, was if you have the freeride, you need to practice a lot.... and if you have the dsp, it still helps to practice...

I found that the old harnees fits better between my waist strap and chest strap on my packpack. However, my girlfriend just ordered the harness, itself, from Liberty Mountain and she really likes it. Seems to work well for people who are around 5' to 5' 5".

New harness is easy to figure out compared to the old.

It's a really tight fit for the beacon itself, making it tough to get it out with a gloved hand. Maybe it will break in.

The zipper orientation would be best for those wearing the beacon on the user's left side. It'll work on the right, but not as easy to access. Bummer for those carrying radios on the left.

A few weeks of using the new harness daily:

I cut off the yellow chapstick holder - it just gets in the way.

I now carry my radio on the right so the beacon can go on the left - the only side this harness will really work on.

The zipper slips down throughout the day. The tether gets in the way of the zipper.

The fit has broken-in and it's now easier to get the beacon out with a gloved hand.

I still don't understand why manufacturers don't follow the simple, always "on" harness design of the F1.

The Freeride is really only an 'inbounds' beacon, or a ski mountaineer race beacon at lowest weight. Frankly, I discourage people from buying it.
