DH pedals are freaking sharp...

About 20-25 stitches sharp...

Ugh. We went up to DV to get some DH runs in this afternoon. I'm riding down Thieves (probably my favorite run), miss my line by a couple inches and hit a root - not enough to wreck, but it made me lose my balance and I dropped a foot to the ground as I'm bouncing over roots. Somehow in the process the pins on the pedal caught the back of my calf and I felt it dig in. Glanced down as soon as I got to an easier section and notice about a 1" chunk of flesh sticking out of my leg. Nice. Figured I have nothing to wrap it with and there's not much else I can do on the mountain so I kept riding. Felt blood running down into my shoe the whole run... such a disgusting feeling. The whole insole and sides are totally soaked.

Anyway, made it down the rest of the run cleanly, Mr.AG rinsed it out with saline wash at the truck and decided it was definitely going to need stitches. It's all wrapped up and I didn't get an exact count, but it's somewhere between 20-25 stitches. Bums me out because it didn't really hurt and I wanted to keep riding... Those little screw-pins are evil (but damn do they grip the soles of your shoes...)

Time to look into some armor that covers the back of my leg too...

Damn, do you two have bets on who can do the most bodily harm to yourself while on bikes?

Ack, sorry about your leg. Twenty-five stitches? Yikes. Hope it heals quickly.

I think you both need some sort of full-body Kevlar suit or something. ;)

Yeah - the number surprised me too, especially since it was fairly painless... One hole took 7 stitches and the cut was in a straight line. The other was bigger and tore in a horseshoe shape and took a bunch to get it all back in place.

They ought to throw in an ER visit with the DV season pass... ;)

The ridiculous thing is I didn't even really fall.

Argh, I know feeling, gotten way too many hits to the back of the leg. Now I'll make sure to buy shin guards that have some sort of padding(using neopreneish stuff) on the back.

I was running pads w/ calf protection and I freakin' hated them. You can't get them tight enough so they slip, they chaffe like crazy and they're hot as hell. I'm sure there are better options, but I gave up and got the Roach Rally FR. I guess you just have to give up some mobility for the added protection.

Ouch. I did that to the front of my shin 2 summers ago. Hardly felt it either and I ended up riding for another hour. Sounds like yours was a bit worse, though.

D@mn AG that sucks. At least the ones to the back of the legs don't hurt as much as the shin diggers - at least till the sweat hits the cut.

I've lost count of the number of round puncture holes I have in my shins.

I guess I should start wearing shin guards....

I think the fact that the pins are threaded to the top and thus extra sharp is what did me in...

OUCH! Sorry to hear that. One of these days, I'd like to see a list of everyone's gnarly biking injuries - seems like not a week goes by where someone doesn't come home bleeding. I think we're all singlehandedly keeping doctors in business.

Sorry to hear about the digs. Tell ppl it was a bear attacking you on the trail. The platform pins on the RM9 have bloodied my calf several times. But only the right one.:confused:

It really does sound like you could use more armor.:eek:

Bummer about the leg, AG... I hate how something stupid like that happens the second you relax and think you're fine (zipping off the legs of your pants).

So, the damage isn't going to prevent you guys from coming to The Collective premiere tonight, is it?

I probably just missed you the other day - I saw Mr. AG's truck loaded with bikes leaving the town of Park City. Were you by chance parked in the Mt. Cervin garage? There were a bunch of gladiators in there at the end of the day.

I ask the same question... I guess it's totally personal choice, but I choose to have either SPD's or Mallet C's on my bikes. I've ridden with flats and I can't ever seem to get my foot in just the right spot because the pegs are so grippy.

I've had too much shinburger in my life than to plant my foot on a sharp-toothed, shin eating, calf stabbing, shoe grabbing pedal.

I've ridden both and I love the locked-in feel of the Mallet C or SPD's...

As a side note, I've got a brand new pair of Wellgo Magnesium flats for sale. $20 shipped takes 'em. They are white, however. And came stock with my Banshee Chaparral.

I was using SPD's on Saturday and found in the rock garden on the NCS course I just couldn't get it while clipped in. I switched back to flats for Sunday and cleaned it. I think I will be switching back and forth all summer.
