I was siting here reading the NYC bike thread, and felt a long slow rolling earthquake. That usually means it was descent sized, and a long way away. Hope everybody in soCal is alright.

That was sweet! I'm on the 42nd floor and our building was just rolling.
There was some misfortune, however- I guessed low in our Earthquake Pool and now have to buy everyone lunch.
Looks like a 5.somethin', the USGS link is busted :(
That, and a shit ton of aftershocks :O
edit: 5.8
Felt it down here in San Diego. I thought it was just the neighbors slamming their door again but it kept going for a while.
5.8. I was shaking for a while here in Santa Barbara. I guess they felt it all the way to Vegas
Nothing like a good earthquake while at the height of tourist season. I felt it very strongly in Santa Monica, and I know that all our local hotels here, and in LA itself, are sold out.
Felt it here in OC pretty good. My first good sized one. A few broken shot glasses but I haven't even heard a siren yet. So as dramatic as that was, seems pretty low on the damage levels. Interesting to see if that was a for-shock or if we will be rolling for a while.
Its great that I was informed of the quake on both TGR and Facebook well before CNN managed to get its act together
5.8 magnitude at 11:42 AM, just SW of Chino, according to usgs.
My bro lives in OC, cousin in Hollywood, and a friend in Santa Monica. I'll email to see who felt what.
I felt it sitting on my couch in San Diego, and heard a few "oh my"s from tourists on the boardwalk. It will make for a good story when they go home.
I was in the Caribbean once during a (small) hurricane, and I still tell the story. I'm sure the locals down there said the same things about me.
5.8 is not much of a quake, unless you are sitting on it, at least not to most of us natives. When it gets well into the 6s is when things get interesting. The biggest I have experienced was 7.2, but was not too close.
Busy week in So Cal

I think being up high and on rollers smoothed it out but made it go on a while longer. There were definitely some strong jolts (a bunch of shit on the shelves above my desk fell down), but for the most part it felt like being on a big boat getting broadsided by waves.
Still a good time, though.
I was at lunch. Several people noticed and then went back to their dining. Just another little pee-pee earthquake.
All of you long time locals seem to be wishing it was bigger......
Yeah, my brother lived in Canoga Park during the Northridge quake of '94. Lost everything, but unharmed. Cousin grew up in Oakland, so quakes are old hat for her too. Friend in Santa Monica is from WI, so I'll give her a call just to make sure.
Even though I lived in LA for years, I was always somewhere else for the big ones... lucky I guess.
2-3 seconds of rolling motion down here in the 858
Pretty close to my house 30miles away...was watching the Verdict on max and grrrrrooooowwwlll...the big closet mirrors buckled here at my house and shook the pool pretty good, maybe for 10 seconds or so in two waves...biggest one I have felt in about 10 years (since the one out by Joshua Tree)...
This was my dog's first quake and it scared the absolute shit out of the Dude--he jumped on my bed and curled up next to me...hour and a half later he still will not leave my side.
peace,
D.
I am 12 miles from the center and it was a good shot. It lasted longer than I thought it would. The P waves hit followed by the s waves close behind... closer than normal. A few broken things but no big deal. Looks like it was a blind thrust fault in cow patty land.
I thought dogs/animals could sense earthquakes...all three of my dogs slept right through the thing...sad
I was driving on the freeway and no semis toppled over and burst into flames. Didn't feel a thing. Damnit! Somehow I always miss earthquakes.
Sitting in the hospital here in SM the building was definitely rolling for quite a while. Nothing violent or with that scary Bang so it wasn't too bad, but still long enough to get everyone a little nervous.
Dad is on the 40th floor downtown and said his building sounded like a bomb went off. A huge BANG! and then a long rolling afterwards, but apparently some people were freaked enough to be in tears. Downtown is definitely closer than SM and 40 floors up will make it felt.
The inlaws think it was just baby Griffith announcing himself to the world...
(hijack) Comish! He's due today?? It's a good day to be born :)
Pussy ass quake!
This blows. I've been in California and Nevade for 3 months now and haven't felt shit.
