I’m new to this site and was just curious how many splitboarders there are here?
And what do they do for work?
uphill transport
I ride a Prior Swallowtail Splitboard. Handles a little more sluggish that I had originally hoped but highly recommended.
[thread hijak]
Just started getting on double planks in the last few years, really interested in doing some of that crazy tele stuff. Is it recommended that one be a well versed alpine skier before crossing over?

So we’ve only got a whopping total of four splitboarders on the site with all these members?
Wow! Our sport really is small.
How about snowboarders in general?
They kept post-holing our threads, so we booted 'em.Quote:

i will probably end up riding a lot more than I do now (about 12 days this season, out of 50+ total days) when I move to UT.
ex.( 8 days in the last 2 yrs...)
ankles so shot, I had to change from the dark side.
in couloirmag you find some of split stuff.
couloirmag.com or something.

I started my alpine on Cross Country skis, so I may not be the best person to give advice, but I found having Alpine skills (stem christies at least, parallel best) do help a lot. Especially if your thighs are knackered from teleing. If you can do a good emergency parallel turn, or a solid hockey stop, it gives you confidence to tele where you might not originally, which helps improve your tele immeasurably.
Just my 2p.

I've given 2 broken bones to that sport over the last 2 seasons, and you leave me off the list?? ;)Quote:

Always have been intrigued, but have yet to try. I want to start being able to access more bc and have been thinking of going back to skiing. This presents another twist to my plans.
I need to look into this.
Or so he keeps saying while eyeing new snowboards. :rolleyes:Quote:

Snowboarder here. Haven't splitboarded but would like to give it a try. However being a greenhorn from FL the Utah BC scares the crap out of me. Seems like many people who die are well-versed and well-trained, so what chance does a neck like me have?

I can add a sprained ankle (multiple times), rotator cuff and scope to left knee in the last 2 as well.Quote:

Maybe I should go back to skiing after reading the sentence I just wrote.
lol. we'll see. but you don't know that my friend (about's snowboarding editor) is in SLC, so it's likely that I'll ride with her crew a lot, she's dead set on me doing it more, esp. powder days:)Quote:

however, she's an ex-ski racer, and I got her on 2 shaped stix for the first time in Telluride this year, and she did have a blast. so we'll see who turns who. but i doubt it. she also has a split board i think.
Me and JHBlueBird are full time boarders Jah. I'm currently learning to teli...
I used to be a SoCal skier with stretch pants, no shirt, flock of seagulls haircut, Lowered Toyota with Mercedes hubcaps. Bumping all the way from TJ to Snowscummit.
CK RIP
That’s why they invented the SPLITBOARD dog.Quote:

It allows us to ski up the hill…no booting required (unless conditions mandate) and then we can snowboard down. It’s quite an invention the modern backcountry snowboarder! ;)

You guys forgot danimal.
No wonder you don't like skiing - you do it all wrong! Ski DOWN the hill, it's a lot more fun than the uphill part.
my first choice on the hill is my snowboard, but that doesn't stop me from getting my alpine or tele gear out during the season.
Skiing is Gat.Quote:

Another snowboarder here
Given the BC terrain in the east, I'm not sure I can justify the splitboard purchase. But just in case I've been lurking on the Couloir forum to figure out which system works best.
bcrider's video clips may force me to cave in here in the next couple of months.
missed this one...
i am a snowboarder and have a split board - doutone 162 - never used it. i bought it off a dude i met on the lift for $100 w/ skins and haven't put it to use yet. still working on proper bc knowledge.
i also thought doutone made suntan lotion.
As long as this thread has been revived, I'll chime in.
Took my skis off one day at the end of the season 4 years ago to try snowboarding. I haven't had skis on since.
Burton Omen Split 170 (K2 approach skis before that), but I usually just bootpack.
where from? i'm from central coast (titusville) but currently living in switzerland.Quote:

A triple threat! Same here.Quote:

After destroying my knees with several decades of alpine skiing, I switched over to trashing my ankles on the board.
But I still dust off the skis now and then to show the new kids how it's done. ;)
Nice to see this thread bumped!
More riders and splitters coming out of the woodwork is a good thing. Lets get some stoke going eh? I know you guys have some pics to share!
Hey Eldo,
Check out this crazy contraption. The euros are really set on 3 section splits. Somebody made one out of an Eldo.

Great pics, bcrider. Keep 'em coming.
What kind of boot/binding system are you using?

  Ouch, it pains me to see that done to an old Eldorado.
But I really should put one of my four worn out Eldos under the saw this winter and make it into a split. Although then I won't be able to make that nice red/white/blue picnic table I was planning. :D

Prior offers the widest production splits right now. They can also make custom splits as can Never Summer. What size boot do you wear? One thing to consider is that if you go too wide, the skis will also be wide in split mode. If the skis are too wide, traversing can be difficult. You might not be able to use the splitboard crampons either.
The splitboard interface that your bindings attaches to also sets you about .25iches higher off your board so toe and heel drag is less of an issue than with a standard board.

I went to the K2 Clicker HB 4 or 5 years again when I got more into backcountry and less into jibbing. The HB for me is a great set up. It has the step-in convenience yet still offers a traditional strap binding/soft boot feel. The highback support is on the binding like it should be, not built into the boot. The system is quick and easy to use and it even accepts a crampon.
A lot of splitboarders use hardboots for the added benefits (edging) in tour mode and some splitboarders use mountaineering boots for their benefits while boot packing or crampon-ing.
I haven’t made the switch to either and don’t plan on it anytime soon until the options get better.
(but it may be sooner than later as K2 Clicker HBs aren’t made anymore)
Here is a pic of my binding on the left, the right is a touring plate experiment.

And my crampon modification to make them lighter and more packable than the production version.

Here they are in use.

Ps. Sanjuanworm,
You and steepconcrete have the best avatars hands down! Thanks for the CK stoke too. You gotta love pics with double plumes…it means the snow is good and the rider is going fast. :)
