Suggest some short-fat skis

It's hot, cloudy and I am stuck in the office. I'd rather be thinking about skis and skiing so make some suggestions for my wife's new tele skis. She is about 5'8" and 135ish, athletic. She will be skiing these in the bc primarily

Here's what she has now:
174 Phat luv (90mm) w/912ti for resort
167 Phat luv (90mm) w/G3 tele - Really loves them
172 Karhu Jills (90mm) w/Dynafit
170 Atomic Pow Cruise (104mm) w/fritschi - fat rock skis

What she has tried
my 180 Fish Stix (106) w/HH - Liked them but could only make big fast turns
167 Evolution Wide Glide (110m) - Liked 'em

I'd like to find something about 110 under foot, light and relatively soft. Some rocker or fun shape would be great. Most of the skis that I think she would like don't come short enough. Not really interested in the side cut of Icelandics and such.

Suggestions?

170 Nordica W105/W9.1FF if you can find 'em

fat, stiff, straight, easy to throw around at that length.
me : 180/6' - i use 'em mostly in tighter quarters (EC bumps and trees) but would likely be more versatile for your wife.

@ 102mm comes the k2 anti piste
i forget exactly what my 181's weigh, but i want to say its about 4.2lbs each
tip rocker
less sidecut than is advertised (my tail actually measures ~116 instead of the advertised 121)

also take a look at the newer versions of the phat luv
its now 102mm and has quite the luscious tip profile.
very sharknosey ala the antipiste i just mentioned

also a volkl katana might be in the running
not light, but you could buy some 165 pow pluses and bend the tips (i have a pair i could sell you cheap)

im sure theres a couple im forgetting
but its summer and im out of practice

Rossignol Steeze/Raven: 110 under foot, pretty soft, comes short in a 174, and skis even shorter because the large twin is included in the length. The steeze is...interesting looking, but very cheap on backcountry if they have not sold out. The raven is the 'tele' version of the same ski, all the same except for the top sheet and the mounting lines.
The Scott P4 is close, a little narrower 106-108 under foot) but it also comes short.
Maybe a pair of Katanas, i think they come as short as 176.

I'll leave the fun shapes and boutique companies to those who know them better, but look into Praxis, PM Gear and DPS if your willing to spend the extra $.

Your wife is the same height and weight as I. 180 Moment Ruby FTW in the BC. Very light, agile, low swingweight, 110 underfoot, ski short.

Ruby, Raven and new Phat Luv all sound like contenders.

I think the 105 and PP would be a bit too heavy and damp. She doesn't like the Pow Cruises much for that reason.

170 106/porohete is a possibility.

Where is the 170cm Praxis/BROcker/Megawatt?

Didn't realize they made a 175 Powder. Now someone buy some real estate from me so I can afford new skis for the little lady.;)

Why not take a look at...
Praxis Powder - 175 or 185 they ski short. I got the 185 and don't think it's too long.

Hellbents - Cloudpeak (another maggette) seemed to really like them

If PMG made a brorocker/lhasa pow in a 176 that would be a great ski- maybe you can get them to do a prototype

eh, my wifey's got these and while she loved them when she was learning to ski pow they are not nearly enough ski for the soft stuff anymore (she likes them in the spring corn still though)...179 Seths on the other hand, she thinks are titties!! She's got 174 (90mm) Phat Luvs too but finds them grabby in the tail and difficult to ski compared to her Seths & 174 Outlaws - which should make you feel comfy with the more modern fatter K2s.


As far as a reco, other than the Seths, I don't have any hard data on what the wife likes in a 110-ish ski. I can say I've been looking all over the place for a good deal on some 181 Thugs for her - just got a feeling on those. Those anti-pistes sound like they would be pretty good. Anyway, I'm paying attention to this thread too...

for the record, my wife: 5'8" 145 pretty strong on moderate terrain - has the skills but gets gripped and skis like it in more difficult terrain.

Check out the line pandora. its the elizabeth but with a girly graphic. they make it in a 162 and 172 with a 110mm waist. I have been trying to get my sister to buy these but shes moving east and doesnt need a pow ski

Line Mother Ships: 172cm 110mm underfoot and soft. Also the 169 K2 Hellbents could be super fun for her as well.

I say Icelantics either a shaman or the nomad.

Thanks T. That Pika sounds perfect. Fat and relatively straight without going quite as radical as the Praxis which might scare her.

Also, good suggestions from others about Line but I am not sure about that sidecut - Very wide tails scare me...and yes that does have a double meaning.

If it has a lighter core than the ruby, it must be made of balsa wood. If it truly measures 170, it will ski like a pair of snowlerblades.

It's 100mm underfoot, super-light core with some metal still in it. Comes in a 165 or 172. It's the women's version of the Team 100, and is just killer. My girlfriend's about the same size, and she's determined to ski hers into the ground - resort, bc, they go everywhere for here.

I'll out another vote in for the Rossi Steeze/Raven/S6. My wife is 5'6" 120lbs and a former club racer. She skied the new S6 when we were in Whistler in the spring and loved them. They have a decent rise in the shovel and are a twin so they ski quite short. The great thing was that she even enjoyed them on the boilerplate groomed morning snow we had in Whistler. The S6 graphics for next year are also a huge step forward from the current Steeze, but the Steeze is selling for a decent price right now.

Haven't tried them, but I also have not heard anything bad about Moment's quality. The dimensions fit the bill also. He didn't say anything about her ability, but judging by the other lengths in her quiver, she might not go for a much longer ski.

Personally I would love to get a longer Pika, asked about getting the short Ruby with the Pika graphic but it wasn't available at the time. There just isn't a good market for longer women's specific skis. It's a chicken vs egg thing. Women who enjoy skiing longer lengths don't trust the "shrink and pink" pitch and shop unisex. Women who could benefit from a longer ski but haven't tried them have been brainwashed into thinking bigger skis are too burly for them. Hard to break this cycle.

What I was insinuating was that the Ruby's are some of the lightest skis I've ever handled, including the dps. You've skied 179 Bros as have I. The Ruby at 180 skis about 10cm shorter. Also, I've got no quality issues with my Moments.

I agree with you on the brainwashing and the packaging. Sarah went from small Jills to Seths. Her skiing improved 1 million %.

Maybe the Volkl Kiku in a 176 (or just a gotama). I'm a little smaller than she is, but I tried them out at Alta on demo day and they were a pretty fun ski.

Also, I have to keep plugging the 179 EHP. I don't think I've ever had more fun on west rustler. Amazing fun shape, light, and very playful.

Regarding size: If these were going to be Village skis mounted with alpine binders and skied with big boots I think the 180 Ruby or 176 Goat would be great. She rips (IMVHO) on her 174 Phat Luvs and would enjoy the stability of these skis.

However, the niche I am trying to fill is a bc tele ski. I'll probably mount Voile Switchbacks and she has 3 buckle T2s. She handled my 180s fine but they weren't ideal for every day bc skiing, so the idea here is not to find the biggest ski she can handle but to find the most fun ski for deep, soft snow.

Keep the ideas coming. I think the Pika might be the winner so far.

I'd really say check out Icelantics. They're making some solid skis that seem pretty wicked light.... Plus, I love how they feel with the tele turn...

Which Icelantics did you have? I'm seriously considering getting the Pilgrims for my GF. The problem is the 169 is probably too long, she's about 5'4" 135 or so and on the tentative side in the woods although getting better quickly. I'm torn about the 151s, I think I skied 150s when I was about 8, but everyone seems to think that most of the Icelantics you need to go short on. I'm just curious if that applies as well for the Pilgrims given that they're narrower than the rest. If they had a 160 I'd be all over that...
