Well, my season started last weekend and it was pretty ordinary. I was last on skis in Canada late January so it was good to get a few turns happening again.
We have had 44 cm in the last 48 hours, and another 70cm or more predicted to arrive by the end of Sunday, so this weekend is shaping up very well.

Weather in Australian ski resorts for this weekend and into next week!
I will be there Saturday and Sunday, should be great (in the trees out of the wind).
Friday 18: strong WNW winds (gale force at times), snowfalls becoming heavier throughout the day with blizzard conditions likely (15-40cm)
Saturday 19: strong WNW winds turning WSW (gale force at times), blizzard conditions with widespread heavy snowfalls to around 800m (20-40cm)
Sunday 20: moderate to strong W winds, light snowshowers (2-7cm)
Monday 21: moderate to strong WNW winds, light snowshowers above 1500m (1-5cm)
Tuesday 22: strong to gale force NW winds, light scattered showers with snow falling above 1650m (1-5cm)
Wednesday 23: moderate SW winds, cloud increasing with possible snowshowers developing during the day
Sounds good. Is this the best it gets in Australia. It's not like NZ is it?
You should come up to Japan next winter. Lots of Australians come up. They take over the resorts just like every other place in the world.;)

Not too sure bout NZ, never been there, but there are some good packages available from Sydney. I am planning a heli skiing trip with some mates at the Tasman Glacier in August 2005.
My Dad did it when he was my age.
It can get very good in Oz, we had a Sunday last year with very little wind but overcast with ok visability and there was easily 70cm of powder all over Mt Perisher. That day was epic.
Nothing like my days in Kicking Horse, Fernie and WB in January 2004.

Cool. I was in Niseko for 3 weeks over last Christmas. Really great time. I'm thinking of going again if I can get the money together.
Terrain is lacking though. Not like BC for sure. And I will repeat that. Not like BC. I was a bit disapointed that way. But the powder is amazing and it's plentiful. I skied many of my days on untracked snow.
Where are you staying? If no ideas yet. I would look up NPC. Niseko Powder Conections. Dirty youth hostel but cheap with a few bars just beside.
Not sure where staying it is a hostel though and it dsoesn't have an 11pm curfew like one of the hostels I almost booked.
Been dealing with deep powder tours.

NPC doesn't have a curfew. But most of the time if it starts snowing everybody is in bed by midnight.
Good bars. I had some very good nights. Swinging from the rafters and hitting on the ladies in Jam Bar and listining to metel in Fatties.
1 night it was 1000 yen (10 cdn) for all you could drink. Snow was shit so we drank the place dry. They ran out of beer a few hours in so were filling up beer glasses with Sake and Shochu. Not a good thing.

Another great weekend last weekend.
No fresh, but 50 lifts open at my home resort.
Having a weekend off due to work but will be there the next three weekends after this one.
Another 40cm is predicted tonight and into tomorrow.
We should have a 2 metre base by end of July. With August still to arrive which is the main month for our snowfall.
It is a great season.
This is the first year in three that my brother isn't teaching at Thredbo. I wonder if he's kicking himself...

Right now it's nearing 35 degrees and my Vice Principle won't turn the air conditioning on in the staff room. Want to kill Vice Principle.

Hey Ski Beaver. Where is the best place to go in Australia and what would it compare to in BC?
Thredbo in NSW is probably the best place to go, most vertical, longest runs - 6 hours drive from Sydney.
Mt Hotham in Victoria is supposed to be pretty good too - have not been there though.
It compares to nothing in BC.
If anything Perisher Blue is like a scaled down version of Sunshine Village - sort of.
My advice would be to save the vacation, having said that I know how hard it is to go without skiing during the summer ( hence the Nthn Hemi trips).

Only smallish places I have been are Kimberly, Norquay.
The rest were all MASSIVE - WB, LL, SSV,KH,Fernie....
Even Kimberly is a big place.
I started at Hemlock and then on to Manning Park. Hemlock is super shitty however MP was a pretty good hill.
How long does it take to get to the hills from Sydney?
5-6 hours.
Is a very easy drive, we do it there and back almost every weekend between June and October.
