Find a higher paying bitch job?
Learn a worthwhile skill?
Shave, dress up, try to look adult, and go to a temp agency. You'd be surprised how much you can make working at some dismal factory or behind some horrid cubicle. It'll make you miss the fun socialization of the dish washing.
When I was 17 I was put to work at a cyclone fence factory through a temp agency. Great hourly wage at the time ... I lasted about four hours. Who knew cyclone fences were largely built by hand?
Dood. Bitch jobs are the greatest thing in the world for a 17 yr. old. You've got more years than you want to imagine of "real" jobs ahead of you. Someday, you'll miss the no-stress, "I can walk outta here without blinking an eye" bitch jobs of your teens.
Otherwise, forget about getting a "job" and get entrepreneurial.
OK Ill bite. I did this stuff in high school on breaks/summer. Requires minimal time and effort, but of course there are tradeoffs.
Look around for sleep studies done at local universities or big hospitals. These can range anywhere from 4-40+ days, and have several different variations; however, for the most part they put you in a room with a bunch of cool toys/beds/whatever with no access to anything that could tell you the time or what day it was. A couple of the ones I did (usually the shorter ones) even put you in with groups of people. Sometimes theyll never turn the lights off, other times the lights will fluctuate randomly, etc. Either way, you make fucking bank. The 4 day ones would usually pay out 5-800, but I did a 24 day stint that netted me 15 grand. No joke. I was set for the remainder of the summer (3 months) with just over 3 weeks in the tank. Im serious about this.
Takes some mental fortitude, but theres no quicker or easier way to make cash as a teenager.
It's like what I tell all the promising young men coming to my office, seeking counsel as to how to launch a career in politics...
Blow job or no job.
I tried the bike shop thing, hoping for some place to be down with some kind of internship type thing, but no dice. They said for something like that i would have to start in january, which is not an option with skiing and school.
I dunno maybe the bosses i have had at dish washing jobs in the past just really sucked balls. It seems like some people don't hate dish washing as much as I (and the other dishwashers) did. That place had crazy turn around with their dishwashers and we ended up getting replaced by a Mexican...
Its not like i am looking for anything terribly long term. I dont intend on this being super serious or anything, Perhaps i should rephrase my question to "what bitch job does not suck too much?
"
That sound like it would rule, what schools/ hospitals did you do it through? and what department?
if you can get into serving food at a relatively classy establishment (i.e. not a hole in the wall greasy spoon chinese place) you can make a lot on tips. Still a bitch job, but pretty darn easy.
serving food > dishwashing
bellmen and valets at good hotels make good money and it's not difficult work. also: still bitch job but pay upgrade.
I would love to be a sever, but there is not a place in town that hires male wait staff, especially not a male who is in high school. (one of many downsides to living in a small-ish town)
I am planning on moving my search down to golden/Lakewood
there is a fish place in lakewood that i am going apply at for a valet position
well my jobs pretty good. I get paid to wash a few dishes, make a few sandwiches, sit around, and eat cake.
What about landscaping and/or lawn mowing? You get to be outside, listen to tunes while you work, and generally make pretty good money (at least in my experience...)
Valet?At 17, doubt it.
Take a trade job (carpentry help, landscaping)
Start doing prep in the kitchen, it's better than dishwashing.
I supervised a BMX track and dug, watered and rode all day when I was 17.
How I was lucky enough to get that job, I dunno.
Grocery store work was fun. Everything from bagging groceries, to shagging carts, to stocking shelves. Probably not as many openings these days with all the grocery stores moving to self-service, and contracting stocking, or pawning it off on the vendors.
Worst bitch job ever was restaurant work. I only lasted a month before walking out.
Best bitch job ever was sound, light, AV, setup/teardown work for a company that provided services to downtown hotels (in Atlanta). I don't know anything about the business here in Denver, but a little googling ought to turn up some companies. Search for AV, conference, rental... that kind of thing.
golf course maintenance? out of work by 2, working outside, nothing too intense, herb-friendly environment
PM Rontele, he needs a landscaping bitch.
You're 17 and have no experience. You're made for bitch jobs, bitch. This will continue until your education or experience begins to back you up so you can get promoted from bitch to scrub. When that happens, there will be another 17 year old to take your place as bitch.
x2 on going into construction trades. Good money, fresh air and lots of exercise there.
Tough call at 17. Most of the better bitch jobs want you to be 18 for insurance/labor law reasons, but ask around at warehouses, construction or trucking companies, things like that. Do you have an eye for detail? If so, buy some cleaning products and start detailing cars, or get a job at a dealership cleaning the cars that get traded in or come in from auctions. The temp agency thing is a good bet, too.
I promise it's true...
my little neighbor buddy that I mentored, he had been spending time with my GF since he was little, was making more as a bellman/valet at age 17 than I was as a professional firefighter. This was in Taos, working for el monte segrado. This would have been around 2004ish. I guess I was kind of surprised he was hired for it too, but he's really a champ, and has proven it by moving on to manage a jiffy lube at age 18-19 while building a rep as a volunteer firefighter. Now he has one of just 5 full time paid positions in the fire dept there at age 21, a job he'll probably retire from at age 41.
you too can do this shit nick, you just have to realize you're the shiznit and then go prove it. :yourock:
I got a job as a video store clerk in high school. Not much in the way of pay, but not very difficult, either.
drug mule
I started construction at 15, by the force of my father, an architect. It was the best thing he ever did for me (as far as forcing me into formative life situations anyhow).
Get really good at computer programming, or go to college to end up in the same place->>> spending the rest of your life with a "real job" in a cubicle, wasting away making big money, so when you have a few hours off on the weekend, you can laugh it up with your other Office Space drones on the golf course like you've succeeded in the game of life. Fuck yeah!
Caddy at a local high end golf course. There is one around here. Have helped get a couple of kids your age jobs there. One caddied for the CEO of Exxon and picked up a $500 tip. Average tips $200 per day.
Unless you have any real need to make serious bank (tuition, rent, debt to pay off, etc...) Take the best paying bitch work you can find. You don't want a job that you can't be hung over at in the summer on a regular basis.
landscaping, bitch. that's what i did during those years. gets you outside and most the time puts you with other wastoids who don't give a fuck. unless they put you with the mexicans.
Get on down to E Colfax and show some leg...
Also, I heard that the Obama campaign is hiring ;)
Somebody mentioned fencing. As in installing fence. I did that all through highschool for a ranch up here. The days were somewhat long, as in 6-5, but, the pay was really good, especially after a summer and you could go in as a crew leader. There really isn't much to it, you get all kinds of cool scars on your hands and arms, and tatter clothes, but it is usually a fairly low key kind of job. Get to cruise in a pick up or four wheeler most of the day, and when it comes time to attach wire, blare tunes out of the pick up. If you can find a place that will take you on, I would go that way. In a heartbeat. Now, I am off to my bitch job, aka, retail. Avoid this at all costs.
In high school I worked at a nursery and garden store as a general all-around bitch. The pay was just okay, but I look back on those days fondly- the guys I worked with were cool, we had a fair amount of goof-off time between taking care of responsibilities, and the job was physically active so I was in shape just from working.
Two years later I started testing games for a software company. It was a good job too, paid much better, and now software development is my career. If you have an idea for what you would be able to do as a "real" job, it's not too early to start heading in that direction. It's not the same thing as a committment, but you've got to try stuff to see if you like it.
You write well, I like your complete sentences and punctuation. Those will serve you well.
Work Construction. Seriously, I wish I had when I was your age. You will learn skills that will last you a lifetime. You will meet some characters, get in shape, get a tan, and participate in something that will be there in 20 years when you return to the neighborhood and can say "I built that". It will probably be hard work, but the pay will be decent and you will have some skills that will always be in demand.
I worked construction in high school. Outside work, fresh air, and a good workout. And you'll be buff when you go back to school. Construction is a 7-3 job most of the time, so you get off early. Do it.
You're in Evergreen right? I worked for parks and rec one summer and got baseball fields ready for games. At lunch every day (they would drop me off at the yellow barn where the official "office" was) I went mt biking in 3 sisters. I drove around in circles listening to music and dragging the field. It wasn't a bad job for a summer, I got to be outside, ride my bike, and learn why people go to college.
If you're well hung, porn star. Lie about your age.
Casa Bonita is always hiring.
Work your way up to cliff-diver, or at least assistant cliff-diver. Go to your interview in a gorilla suit.
hey nick--
a lot of forest service districts hire 16 and 17 yr olds to work on their trails crews under the Youth Conservation Corps program. If you're interested in doing manual labor that is actually pretty freakin' fun, you should try giving the South Platte Ranger District a call and see if they are hiring.
when I was 17 I bussed tables at a place where we got cash tips. I think I earned 10 an hour in cash plus minimum wage, not bad. perhaps you could make some calls to restaurants and find out which ones tip their non-server employees?
This would be correct. Not only do you make good dough walking around a golf course, but you also meet people, that, if you're not a complete asswipe, could have excellent connections for you in the future, with the future being a few days later if you play it right.
sorry, i didnt read every post word for word--but waiter? crazy people work in restaurants, so its super fun, you can spit in the food of people you dont like and hello--hottie waitresses?? Pick a good restaurant, not a diner for them. Do you want to spend your summer working with a bunch of slacker guys like yourself, or do you want to make money and have some fun--
Waiting/bussing tables at the golf course sounds ideal- same money as anywhere else (although people might not tip there?), you can play the course sometimes, there will be girls, you get to be outside, Lacey Underall, etc.
I look at it this way: you're not going to get a great-paying job (unless you can get a job waiting tables at a nice restaurant, it sounds like you can't), so you might as well get one with sweet perks. Since you're a teenaged dude, you're probably goofy, smell bad, and can't buy alcohol. A job that puts you in proximity to booze and girls should be your #1 target.
Side thought: do your parents know anyone who runs a business and could give you a job?
