Gotta put my best friend down tomorrow, his hips are really bothering him and
he's starting to go after other dogs. Vet thought it would be best to put him down now, rather then wait until someone gets hurt..

I will openly admit for the first time in public that I cried when my dog passed, but not any of my human relatives. It's fucked up I know, but it's true. Seeing those pictures of Austin almost brought a tear to me eye. +++++vibes+++++

Aussie - I'm with you on that. I cried when my dad died and when we've had to put dogs down. I haven't shed a tear for another person... Gotta love the dogs.

I'm so sorry to read about this; my wounds are still fresh from Shadow's passing. Please send a pm if you need to chat. I have found writing about it and sorting through old photos has helped me put things into perspective. I also updated their dogster pages as kind of a tribute, as dorky as that may sound. Along the way, I found a ton of old photos from my old GSD, Moab. He passed away in '03. http://www.dogster.com/dogs/1314 The website also has a grieving forum that's also helped me deal. It may help you, as you know you are not alone in this.
I like to think Shadow, Moab, and Beauregard have found a new friend in Austin today. He's now forever free to roam and without pain. I am so fond of the GSD; it takes a special guardian to care for this breed. Austin was a beauty!

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors. Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day long with each other.
There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs from the group!
You have been seen and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

I stood beside your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you where crying, you found it hard to sleep
I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
“It’s me, I haven’t left you, I’m well. I’m fine, I’m here.”
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour your tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today. Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today. You tend it with such care.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said, “It’s me.”

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"
"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.
"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.
Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.
"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.
"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed There was no fence.
As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.
"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"
"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."
"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.
"There should be a bowl by the pump."
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.
When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.
"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.
"This is Heaven," he answered.
"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said
that was Heaven, too."
"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell."
"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"
"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

We found out Austin had really, really bad hips when he was 4 months old, so we knew his time was limited but it went so fast. The wife and I decided to give him the best life we could, even though it would be short. My wife took the dogs to the vet yesterday (on her birthday) and called me and told me it was time. Talk about a crappy birthday present.
Austin was the first dog that was 'mine'. I drove to Billings, Mt in a blizzard the day after Thanksgiving to pick him up. I stood outside in the winter in Montana in my bath rob every night for a few months so Austin could do his business when he was a pup. His belly dragged in the snow, so we had to shovel out a spot for him to go. Now he wakes me up every morning. at 7 by nudging me with his snout so he can go out. Guess I'll have to start using the alarm clock.
Luckily I have my wife and Austin's 1/2 brother, Bishop, to fill Austin's void.
Damn...this never fails to bring tears. It's the only bad thing about loving dogs.
My shep cosmo will turn 8 shortly...just the othrt day the thought occurred that our time together is short. Its a tough thing, but the last kindness we do for our friends. So sorry for you sfotex
I'm in the same boat with my Lab. Bad hips really suck. We just keep her as happy as we can, just like you did. It's all you can do, but I know that day will suck really bad.

My heart goes out- I still keep my dog's collar in my truck and it's been two years. When I hear the tags jingle, it always gives me a sense of comfort and I think of him.

:frown: Sincere condolences for your loss. I can't open these threads without tearing up, and yet I open them anyway. The poems LB post absolutely destroy me. There's nothing like the love of an animal.
So sorry to hear it Mike. He (and the other 2 kids) are wonderful dogs. Austin made it a lot longer than you were told he would and you gave him a great life. I think that's all any dog could ask for. Pass on my condolences to the wife please.

Farvel min ven. It has been hard today in the Sfotex household with the loss of Austin. Even though I have only been around Austin for about a week, he was a great boy, he will be missed. Now hopefully Misty will keep Bishy in line, if not, then tye will have to lay the smack down. RIP Austin. And M, know that if there is something you and the wife need, you have a friend here for y'all.
++ vibes, and well, i know what you are going through. my chocolate lab is in hospice care right now .... he is 11, so i know he had a good run. but he's been such a great dog. i will miss him terribly. fortunately he lived long enough to teach my golden how to be a good dog.
here's a photo from happier days (last summer...my golden turns one next month).
Big time bummer,and I know how you feel,in the last 9 months both of my dogs had to be put down.It does make me happy knowing that they were treated well and had a quality life.
Sorry for ya. I still remember when we had to put down my german shepherd for the same reason. Old Herman was a good dog. No he was a great dog. Many of my best childhood memories are of stuff with him.
I am sorry, it sucks doesn't it. When my last dog died I ended up selling my truck, mainly because I couldn't bear looking across the bench seat and not seeing her there anymore. :(

I miss my dog. She's got some arthritis and lost 9 pounds, but will hopefully gain it back.
