I have a young son (5) that has a no chance to ski conventionally due to cerebral palsy. I have been thinking of getting him out to try something at the local bump. What is a good age to get him going on a sitski?

The size of the rigs has been the biggest concern. The school has a couple buckets that would just swallow him up. But I suppose tethered to an instructor it wouldnt matter much.

Tethered to an instructor he will be fine. The bucket and ski might be too big for him to control anyway, even if it was a perfect fit. Being tethered and kinda being taken for a tour will be great fun for him and should give him the bug.

The bumps can be a bitch! The shock obviously cant anticipate the upcoming bumps so I launch and get unwanted air all over the place if I'm not careful.

I have had students as young as 5 in what is called a Bi-Ski, a little more stable than a Mono-ski. They make them for kids and adults and pad them up if they are too small for the bucket. I have been working with a group of kids with Spina-bifida for the past several seasons that are now 9-10 years old and they are just getting into Monos and getting more independant. It takes them awile to get used to using the outriggers to stay under control on there own without a teather. I'd only really done nordic skiing before the accident, with a couple days alpine so wasnt a big skier at all. Getting in a sitski isnt really that hard, it's mainly about perfecting the balance.
