Completely different style but Geddy Lee belongs in the great bass player catagory.
seen vic live, he tears it up, TEARS IT UP
Paul Chambers was, like, kinda ok. ;)
yessah you know more about music than I but playing the melody & the rythym of a song at the same time onthe Bass guitar just blow my pee brain awayQuote:

another vote for wooten.
edgar meyer is definately worthy of mention if you're talking bass, not just bass guitar.
ryan stasik of umphrey's mcgee is freakin sick as well...
Bill Laswell
Bootsy Collins
Jamaaladeen Tacuma
to mention one that hasent been mentioned...
Matt Freeman of Rancid..
yea it is punk rock, but man that guy has some fast fingers and can strum that bass..
Bass! How low can you go?
Death row what a brother knows
Once again, back is the incredible
The rhyme animal
The incredible D. Public Enemy number one
Five-O said "Freeze!" and I got numb
Can't I tell 'em that I really never had a gun?
But it's the wax that the Terminator X spun
Now they got me in a cell 'cause my records they sell
'Cause a brother like me said "Well
Farrakhan's a prophet and I think you ought to listen to
What he can say to you, what you ought to do"
Follow for now, power to the people say,
"Make a miracle. D, pump the lyrical"
Black is back, all in, we're gonna win
Check it out, yeah y'all, here we go again
Chorus
Turn it up! Bring tha noize!
Never badder than bad 'cause the brother is madder than mad
At the fact that's corrupt as a senator
Soul on a roll, but you treat it like soap on a rope
'Cause the beats in the lines are so dope
Listen for lessons I'm saying inside music
that the critics are blasting me for
They'll never care for the brothers and sisters
now across the country has us up for the war
We got to demonstrate, come on now, they're gonna have to wait
Till we get it right
Radio Stations I question their blackness
They call themselves black, but we'll see if they play this
Chorus
Get from in front of me, the crowd runs to me
My deejay is warm, he's X, I call him Norm, ya know
He can cut a record from side to side
So what, the ride, the glide
should be much safer than a suicide
Soul control, beat is the father of your rock'n'roll
Music for whatcha, for whichin', you call a band, man
Makin' a music, abuse it, but you can't do it, ya know
You call 'em demos, but we ride limos, too
Whatcha gonna do? Rap is not afraid of you
Beat is for Sonny Bono, beat is for Yoko Ono
Run DMC first said a deejay could be a band
Stand on its feet, get you out your seat
Beat is for Eric B, and L.L. as well, hell
Wax is for Anthrax, still it can rock bells
Ever forever, universal, it will sell
Time for me to exit, Terminator X-it
Chorus
From coast to coast, so you stop being like a comatose
'Stand, my man? The beat's the same with a boast dose
Rock with some pizzazz, it will last why you ask?
Roll with the rock stars, still never get accepted as
We got to pleed the fifth, we can investigate
Don't need to wait, get the record straight
Hey, posse's in effect, got the Flavor Terminator
X to sign checks, play to get paid
We got to check it out down on the avenue
A magazine or two is dissing me and dissing you
Yeah, I'm telling you
I've seen Wooten a few times and he is the facking mang.
Others:
Phil Lesh
Mike Gordon
John Paul Jones
GEORGE PORTER (The Meters)
Juan Nelson (Innocent Criminals)
David Schools (WSP)
Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers Band)
Jason Newstead (Metallica)
Meshell Ndegeocello
Cliff Burton. (Heh).
Great list so far. Also:
Gary Gilmore. Superb technically, one of the lost greats. Mostly did blues stuff. Usually played with JJ Cale and Taj Mahal, I think, but was big on playing his bass as melodic lead.
Willie Dixon. Not sure if he can be considered a great in terms of instrumental prowess, as he was too busy writing notes, but he was certainly a titan in terms of his influence. Robert Plant built that estate in Scotland with those owed royalties.
John Entwistle. In the end there's only one bass king in the rock idiom, and that's The Ox.

how about aston 'familyman' barrett?
mingus.
I always thought that Chuck D was saying "How low can you go/death row/water buffalo," but I have to admit that Plakes' rendition makes more sense.
Anyone play Tony Hawk 2 enough that it was the first thing you thought of when you read the title?
.....no? ok I am a loser.
I wasted way too much of my life away playing that damn game.
Wooten rocks
However, I have to mention Rob Derhark from moe.
Bass great Lesh Philling!!!
Stanley Clarke
Stu Hamm always puts on a great show.
And the most underrated bass player of all time....................John Paul Jones
Honorable Mention: Geezer Butler
Fuck yeah, Rob Derhak from moe. is fucking sick!

JPJ is good but no OX & jazz bass is far & beyond the rythm section meanderings of both those boys
Mingus, now thats a mention
serial boys Phils biscuts have weight but the man is overrated in this playing field
I was going to say Stu Hamm also, at the bela fleck show last night i was thinking about when I used to see Hamm with Satriani.
But Vic is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. Last night was mindblowing, he is a virtuoso.
Mingus, Jaco!
Jimmy Garrison, Gary Peacock, Christian McBride.
Sting (just kidding).
There are lots of others--I used to like Fishbone's bassist, too.
Seconded!Quote:

Cant believe I forgot about Jaco Pastorius, he's definately in the top 5.
He probably had one of the more interesting rock and roll type deaths too.
OH shit, nobody mentioned James Jamerson, the bottom of Motown.
Well, there's the Ron Carter, Mingus, Charlie Hayden. But don't forget Jack Bruce, John Wetton, or Trey Gunn.
I was solicting current players with this but what stays on topic around hereQuote:
