My 1,000th Post: I'm outta here (NYC that is......)

So i feel like my 1,000th post is the appropriate time to announce my plan to leave this city i have called home for 23 years of my life........

I know i have talked through the years of moving out west, but there has always been something about NYC that has drawn me back in......it has been a love/ hate relationship but i am finally ready to sever all ties. Most of my family and friends are here and i do have some great times here. However, i am getting sick of being locked in the concrete jungle. I want to live in a house with my car outside, not an overpriced apt and i want to be able to play golf or ski or bike after work, instead of battling crowds on subways and crowded bars. Although there are a lot of active people in the city, it seems like all everyone does is work all week and then get plastered on the weekend, only to do it all over again week in and week out. Now don't get me wrong, i love to party but i also love to travel and be outside and be adventurous. This mindset i feel is severely lacking with my group of friends and in this city so i wish to seek out some new places and gain some new experiences. So many people my age (23) get a job in NYC and just get stuck here, working too hard, getting out of shape etc...and then in a few years they look back and say what did i do with my life? I don't want to make that mistake - i want to meet some new people and have an adventure while i am young.

Anyway, i am ranting here but my main point is that i have decided not to renew my lease in the fall and search for a new place to live (out west). I am having surgery to remove the metal plates and screws in my ankle in september or october and then after my month of recovery i would like to find a place to live in a ski town, even if it is only for a couple months. Instead of signing up for a year lease somewhere i wouldn't mind bouncing around or trying out a few places. I have my own internet company (website) that i can run from anywhere, as long as i have internet - so i have a lot of possibilities in terms of a town to live in.

I have some friends in Aspen so i was thinking about that as a possibility - also considering the Tahoe area or SLC. The only thing that would limit my choice is that i need to be near a big airport since i will have to travel for work a decent amount.

The only tough thing will be telling my girlfriend. I know i am not going to marry her but she is great and i am enjoying my time with her now. It will be tough to break the news to her and I assume it will mean breaking up with her before i leave. I don't think a long distance thing will work with her - Plus, i want to find a girl who is as active as i am and with the same attitude etc.....

But for now i am feeling very excited with the possibility to finally live out my dream and experience some new places (and ski a ton).

You may be surprised at the GF's reaction. Any chance she'd welcome a change of scenery as well, and would love to get into the outdoors and just needs an excuse to do it? In other words, for all you know, it may turn out she's the girl of your dreams after all.

I made the move West (admittedly not to mountain life, however) after 31 years -- 18 on Long Island followed by 13 in NYC. No regrets. Mazel tov.

Congrats on pulling the trigger! As hard as it may be, it is best to do it young, before you build all those extra ties that bind. The Mrs. and I are considering a similar move in a couple years but I'm still not sure that it will happen. We are not unhappy where we are but the itch to move keeps getting stronger for me. Right now she seems agreeable but when the time actually comes to pull up the roots that we have planted over the last 18 years, will we actually be able to do it?

Just go for it and don't look back!!

Thanks for the support guys - its been years of grappling with the idea and dreaming but its finally coming together, at least the early stages of my planned exit from NYC. As for the GF, she will def not want to follow because of her job/family and the fact that she is not outdoorsy whatsoever.

And Benny, as for my apt - $3,995 for a tiny 3 bedroom........

Soon i will be posting, asking who knows of any apts etc...to sublet or rent......hopefully in a range much less than what i am paying for my cubby hole......

Holy fuckballs. You will be able to go just about anywhere and get a sweet place for like 1/4 that and still have tons of cash for blow and ski town hookers. :fmicon:

I left NY (Westchester) when I was 18 and have never looked back. Spent fifteen years bouncing around CO, and now find myself in SLC.
For good airport access and good skiing, this place is awesome. Rent is DIRT CHEAP! You could have a sweet three bedroom house for half what you were paying, or if you could afford that, you could buy pretty easily.

Tahoe's also a good option for airport access (Reno), but rent's a lot more.

So you are tell us you are moving before telling her? Just leave your post on the screen when she is home. Then you won't even have to tell her.

Sounds like it is time to take a move. Lots of country to see and ski. Besides, NYC will still be there.
