skiing w/o insurance?

Ok heres the deal. I just turned 23 and I'm taking a semester off, so I'm almost positive that I'm no longer covered on my mom's health insurance plan. What are my options? How many out there don't have insurance? The only reason I'm worried is that my right knee has felt a little loose since a big fall last winter, but I never got it checked out. I have a brace for my left knee, so I'm not too worried about it, but I know how expensive these things can get. Any ideas on what to do, or just suck it up, grow a pair and go on with life as is? Spring for the health insurance.

Bad idea to ski without any insurance. I did it for a while, but then picked some up shortly before a fall that cost about $15,000 from knee surgery, rehab, etc. Didn't think it would ever happen, but it did. You can get a 30 day policy through a company called Fortis, it's like $30 a month, you can get it for 3-4 months in a row. You have to pay $500 before they pay anything, but then it's pretty much normal coverage. With a serious surgery, you end up paying at least that anyway, get SOMETHING, anything.

I concur. You will regret it big time if something happens and you don't have insurance. And then get your knee checked out.

Ditto on the spring for it technique, although I need to follow my own advice. Unfortunately you won't be getting a comprehensive policy, IE doctors visits w/ low deductable and such, but get it for the catastrophic.

my school insurance ended 9/1/02. got bcbs non-group to the tune of $360/month. broke my back 9/8/02.

Yeah - you'll want to be covered. If you get injured w/o insurance and then later experience something similar while covered you may get screwed with a "preexisting condition" clause.

never go without insurance dude. glad i had it when the $20,000 knee surgery bills started to show up.

Or - if you don't have a job - move to California. All the locals in South Shore and Kirkwood get their injuries covered through MediCal and their knees done by one of the best in the business.
Arny's got you covered - for how long though, I can't say. His new budget is due any day.

Thanks for the replies. This Fortis might be what I'm looking for. I just want to make sure that when/if something does happen, I'm not completely screwed. My left knee needed 3 operations to get where it is today and that is something I don't want ot have to pay for out of pocket.

It depends, with your history of knee surgery, probably quite a lot, but you have to go through underwriting and all that stuff. With this fortis thing, you don't.

Health insurance is soo important. See if you can get it through or job, if not break the bank.

I've been without insurance for 11+ years now.I'd been toying with the idea of getting some for a couple of years,but other monetary issues took precedence.

My last girlfriend broke her neck MTN Biking & had a $50,000 surgery & then 6 months of rehab.Her insurance saved her.We fought about the issue now & again while we dated.When we split up ,she cited my lack of responsibility,i.e. the way I ski & live my life with no insurance ,as one of the primary reasons she didn't want to hang with me.

That helped me to realize that it had been way too long since I had insurance.I'm trying to find something that I can afford,that will actually cover my expenses should something go wrong.Thank for the thread & info gang!

Dude, go blue cross/blue shield. It's like 100 bucks a month. Problem solved.

and think about the random shit that can happen! last season, my appendix went to hell on me and had to come out, insurance saved me about 12000 bucks

I skied without insurance last season and backed out of many lines I wanted to ski for that very reason. Hated that.

Now ya know why I'm busting ass to find an individual policy.

I did alot of that to, especially in the terrain park this summer. But on the bright side it keeps me from being reckless.
