TR - Breakfast Patrol with the Mulletizers

The Mullets were scheduled to leave town today. They'd spent yesterday at the 'Bird with Professor and MT (among others) , and I'd meant to join them but got too busy at work. The morning was perfect for a quick hike up LCC before I went back to work and they packed for the Summit

Nice weather, eh?

Turnaround time was reached when we got to the lake, and we headed down. 9800feet N/NE facing, a mix of windcrust and some soft stuff, minor changes to more westerly aspect would reveal a nastier breakable crust, but some nice skiing was had.

Just got out of the ER in SLC, thanks for the thoughts guys. It actually hurt quite a bit...

The main damage was:
- broken nose
- 3/4 inch of face/lip hanging off (they call this facial lacerations)
- lower lip split from my gum the whole way across the mouth

40-odd stitches to my face and mouth mean everything is more or less back in the right place. The ER sent in a plastic surgeon which was a nice thought - it seems they failed to realise the poor quality of the patient but I appreciated it anyway. He spent well over 2 hours sewing.

The nose is straightish so I think I'll leave it alone unless it looks really crooked when the swelling goes down. My lips have swelled up to Nigerian size (no racism intended - they are just really big). No black eyes yet but I'm hoping for some tomorrow. ;) I'm debating if I should take pain meds or just lay off them so I can have a beer. :)

Some great comments from the ER:
- "Shit, the inside of your mouth looks like ground beef" - Nurse
- "Hey, I can see your mandible below your teeth" - Tri-Ungulate
- "Shit, there's more bark in here! Damn, is that another pine needle as well?" - repeatedly by lots of people

Unfortunately we missed our flight to Seattle so will have to try to get to the PNW/WB summit in a couple of days. I was really looking forward to skiing Alpy/Crystal/Stevens this weekend but guess they can wait. I am just glad this wasn't any worse - impact a few inches lower would have been neck/adam's apple. No head injury, I think, (limited CT suggests OK too) I skied out ok, wasn't at all woozy or concussed. Surprisingly I still have a full set of gnashers. Sorry Splat, we were in Tahoe when you were in Butthole Nowhere Queebec, no plans to go back there on this trip for now (although watching the tele contest might be fun...)

No helmet, indeed. Not sure it would have helped this injury but I WILL be wearing one in the BC in future, even for "mellow tours" like today's. Goggles might have saved my nose. On the other hand sunglasses might have made things a whole lot shittier.

The medics were awesome. The ER Doc was Rob Stevens, the plastic surgeon was Dr Diez (sp?) from ENT. The nurses (all fellas - respect) all rocked too. Nothing beats the fact that EVERY person who treated me was a skier; how cool is that? Tri-ungulate MD even got his hands dirty during the stitch up:

Holy crap. Glad to hear you're (relatively) OK. From the first photos I thought it might just be a bloody nose, but damn that's quite the laundry list of pain.

Mullet, you might want to find a chill place to hang for the next week or so. I'd be surprised if you'll feel good enough to ski within a week. I'm guessing a couple of days down for the count and several more taking it really easy. Ever been to southern Utah?

Not a bad idea (I'm considering it) but as a rull I advise not eating trees. INfact, I would go further: don't break falls with face vs. tree. ;) I'm going back with a saw to finish the fucker off. Wilderness area my ass. :)

Heal up quick..... As far as "I'm debating if I should take pain meds or just lay off them so I can have a beer". I'd recommend taking both . You'll sleep better.
