Lost Boarder at Keystone Found?

First I heard he was lost was when I read in the paper this morning that they found him, after three days. While I am glad they found him and that it seems he will be okay, the whole thing is a little puzzling. I've only been to Keystone once, but it just didn't seem that big. Am I crazy or does three days seem like a really long time to be lost there? And if he had just kept going downhill wouldn't he have reached civilisation a lot quicker than three days?

This just seems odd, could someone shed a little more light on what happened?

How old is this person?

They did find him after 3 days. He realized he was lost and never moved from where he was...which isn't a bad idea if you're out in the wilderness, but from where he was located at Keystone he could have just kept riding downhill and run into the road to Montezuma. Or he could have just hiked uphill following his tracks and gotten back to the run he left the resort from. He did build a snowcave and avoid most adverse affect of staying outside in the cold so he wasn't completely mindless, but seems like he could have been more pro-active.

I am glad they found the guy and he is OK, but I was thinking the same things as some of you guys - why not just ride down the mountain?

The guy might lose toes becasue of this situation.

My thoughts exactly. Would have been a lot of work to hike back uphill. Then again they found him only 500 yards out of bounds. I doubt he would be suffering from frost bite if he had of taken that action. Still he is probably going to just lose a few toes, it could have very easily have been his life.

That guy must not get out much. The "stay where you are when you're lost" bit applies to when you go to the mall with your mom...the ball is sort of in your court when you are 31 and skiing out of bounds.

Being a 31 year old snowboarder who ventures out of bounds a lot, um, what the hell was he thinking?? I sure as hell would have gone right back up and get inbounds to ride out. Or if I was disoriented (I would not be as I carry a compass with me always), riding down to the bottom would make sense too.



But to hole up for 3 days??? I just don't get it. Even 500 yards in he should have been aware of his route back out, or proposed route at least.

Word has it he was really camping and didn’t tell anyone. When they found him and started asking questions, he played stupid so as not to get into trouble for illegal camping and also bringing out the rescue crew.

Remember those girls that got lost snowboarding at Loveland Pass a few years ago?

They dug a snowcave, ate chapstick, stayed the night, etc., etc.

They were like a couple hundred yards from the highway. They probably heard the trucks going by.

Far be it from me to take pleasure in other's misery - 'cause I don't - and it does blow that this knucklehead may loose some toes because of this and I do not find that funny, but c'mon. You ski 500 yards out of bounds and become so disoriented that you spend 3 days waiting for a S&R to find you and end up on the front page of the Rocky Mountain News? One would think that by the end of day 1 one would think, "I best be walking my ass back up the hill and then ride back down to my car." I saw a thread awhile ago about a lost dog on Berthoud on a couple of different boards. After about three days, if I recall correctly, the dog managed to find its way to the highway. What's that say about this dude?

Glad he's okay, but yeah, strange story. For those not familiar, most of the bottom of this place is pretty flat, with a lot of snow it would be work getting out of there. You can always do the trick where you put weight on your board with your arms and kicks with your feet almost like your swimming...

Camping sounds dubious if he is really going to lose toes.

Did he have food and camping stuff?

Unfortunately the going attitude these days is "I fucked up, somebody has to bail me out." It's usually innocuous, like when my helpless roommate complains about the channel until someone changes it, but it seems like this is a more extreme example. I think he just assumed that he couldn't do anything and that S&R would get him.
