Smells like winter..

Ok, this might sound a bit weird, but I hope not..

Do you know the smell (or at least the nasal sensation) you get when you walk outside in the winter? It feels cold, crisp, & awesome?

It may be that I just walked out of the shower..
It may be that we just got over one of the nastiest humid heatwaves in memory..
It may be that humidity is unusually low right now..
It may be the violent thunderstorm last night "cleaned" the air..

I don't know what it was, but when I opened my window and stuck my nose out, it "smelled" like winter. And it was awesome.

I love the smell of winter...crisp, cold air.

Sexiest cold front ever! Dont think I could have endured many more days like the last few.

I'm not sure about the smell of winter, but there definitely is a certain smell in the air right before it snows.

I miss that.

I open up my ski bag during the summer and smell my jacket & gear. It all still smells like snow!

I like it in the late summer evenings and into fall when you can smell the subtle hint of houses using their fireplaces around town. That mixed with the colder "smell" semsation of the air coming off the moutnains...

Yes, my friend... July is about over, August will get colder at night (atleast where I live) and before you know it, flakes begin to arrive before you even dicide what to dress up as for Halloween...

I smelt it the other morning.
I liked it.
A true "winter nose" can smell it coming laoooooooong before fall even hints at arriving.
I love the feeling of knowing we are on the backside of summer. :D

I think Tahoe smells the best with the rich pine smell that feels like a weed hit when you take it in deeply.

I can assure you that my ski boots smell nothing like snow. If that's what snow smelled like, there'd be no skiers, guaranteed.

and the more of em I live through the quicker it comes back around, I'll get the "smelt like winter" smell and then the chills as the mind travels back and feels the fleeting floating feeling..... ahhhhh, yup that's nice- then I gotta just smile and know that I'll be back around to that moment soon enough

My gear smells like a telemark skier. Yuck.

Stepped out of my car at work this morning and there was a sharpness to the air. Somebody was burning wood which gave a beautiful November 5th feel to the air. We celebrate Guy Fawkes Night on this date with fireworks and bonfires and I always get really stoked at that time of year knowing that the winter season is just round the corner.

July 28th felt just like that for, oh, about five seconds this morning.

It's stuff like this that keeps me coming back to the forum for more. :D

Who else could you tell about these feelings in the midst of the dog days of summer? I love you, powdermangs. Bwahahaha!

Hey Pube, how bout that storm in Suffern? Broke a giant umbrella we had in the backyard and damn near brought down some trees. It was awesome.

I personally didn't observe any wind.. But judging from all the debris everywhere, that wind was short-lived and extreme.
It was like a tropical storm had come through, lasted 5 minutes, and stopped.

So here's what happened:
It was raining hard when I left the house to go to shop-rite in Ramsey. Traffic was fine. There was no rain (but wet pavement) at the market when I arrived. I spent 10 minutes inside. I don't believe it had rained while I was inside, but getting out, traffic in all directions was stopped, even side streets. 17S was particularly bad - road must have been closed for something. I was going on 17N which was slow but bearable. Took me about 20 minutes to drive 4 miles home.

When I got home, the aforementioned debris were everywhere..

So whatever happened, this was what the radio was saying:
10,000 customers without power in Airmont (a mile east of me)
Trees down on train tracks in Tuxedo (7 miles north of me)
Trees down on the Palisades Parkway (10 miles east of me)
And there were other trees down blocking traintracks and highways, I just don't remember where..

That must have been one hell of a short-lived storm, because I personally observed no wind, just lighting and heavy rain - and that didn't last long at all.

I was one of those customers without power, although I'm in Montebello, not Airmont (whatever, close enough). I was at home when the storm came through and watched it from my kitchen.

I can't remember the last time I saw wind like that around here. Maybe hurricane Floyd six years ago or so. I heard gusts reached 60mph, which I consider fast as hell, although I'm sure people in Florida would scoff at that statement.

It started raining after a little while and the wind gradually subsided with the whole storm ending after a total of about 20 minutes.

If it had been snow it would have made one helluva blizzard. Oh well.

Ok - it was on the summit of mt mansfield (stowe, vt) in 50mph wind - and rain.. but I definitely did not smell summer (eww) on Saturday.

yeah, i bet ur saying that now. its only, like, 1,000,000 degrees with 1,000 percent humidity across the river here

Tahoe today - 68 degrees at noon! Overnight low was around 40 last night - finally a change from the heat!!

another spike in the endless NE heatwave coming tomorrow...don't know about anyone else, but i've been having recurring dreams this past week that involve a large dumping in VT...in one drove up to a socked in k-mart (that actually looked like a bigger mtn oout west), and saw skiers...only to be awoken by one of my cats. last nite discussed skiing southern VT, as bromley, $tratton (and presumably magic - the only one of the three there i'd do) had gotten dumped big time...and a few other nites that are foggy, but definitely involved lots of snow.

these dreams are a coping measure by my heat stroked psyche no doubt...but i hope i'm also catching wind of an early snowicane event like the 30"dump of last october 19th. i (and i'm sure i speak for us all) SO needing of an early start to the season!

I totally know the smell of winter, ahhhh winter

Cooling off in the Canadian Rockies as well. In fact, a brief snow storm blew through Sunshine Village ski resort yesterday afternoon. (Elevation 7,000 feet.) Not unusual for this time of year, but it sure scared the hell out of a group of tourists from Mississippi. They seemed to think it was some sort of sign from GOD.

Also, overnight low temps dropped below freezing at Nakiska ski resort weather station last night.

Won't be long now.

It's getting close. My trees are de-leafing with this cool down in the weather :eek:
