So I took a rock to the ass from about 15' and it was a pretty hard hit. Thank god it was perfectly centered on my left cheek. About 4 days after the injury the back of my knee started hurting and it is bruising. My ass cheek never even turned red let alone purple. It did swell a good bit.
A week and a half later and the back of me knee/lower hamstring is pretty sore and purple. It hasnt got any better for about 4-5 days.

You're getting draining right now - pooled blood from the injury site draining out of your system via gravity and absorbtion. In most cases, you'll be just fine and you'll be better in another week or two. In the worst case, you could get compartment syndrome and lose your leg if most of the blood is absorbed by muscle tissue. Enough reason to have a doc or PA monitor it, imo, but that depends on your insurance situation, I guess. If you notice intense muscle tightness and muscle pain increasing at a pretty rapid rate, get to the ER, asap.

I took a ski binding to the hip earlier this winter on a hard deep carve gone bad and I had the same but milder symptoms on my knee but on the side. It was kind of wierd but pretty self explanatory. Gravity. Things were relatively on the mild side and swelling was only bad on my hip for about two or three days so I monitored myself closely and did not go to the doctor. I always had 100% movement and pain was not a problem after the first day or three and the knee deal was only just a tender feeling. The whole thing took over a month to clear up with a nice bursa forming on my hip towards the end before it went away as well. You should be icing the injury impact as much as possible for sure to lower clot risk and if in doubt or if things worsen see a doc. Maybe one will chime in. I usually figure that if I am improving I'd rather do other stuff than waste my time seeing a comfort doctor. My draining issue didn't extend past the knee though.
i don't mind spending my $20 copay to see what's going on.
if it was compartmental syndrome I would have some major swelling and tightness, no?
The site of the injury is pretty good. Deep soreness but manageable and getting better.
The lower hamstring feels and looks like a big shallow bruise. It seems to be in the skin/fat tissue and not in the muscle.
I hate going to doctors, I prefer TGR :biggrin:
Ice everything to stop the bleeding ASAP. Ice bath prob would be best. Keep icing for a few days.
You do not have compartment syndrome. You will not get compartment syndrome. Ice will do no good. The bleeding stopped days ago. You do not need to see a doctor. It will take a while for the bruising to go away. If there's enough blood sometimes some of the pigment will remain in the tissue permanently. Stop jumping on rocks.

Probably true. I had a hip pointer that drained out like that after a game in college. The problem was lack of ice to stop the bleeding, but you need it pretty quick off the bat to stop the bleeding. Ice works wonders. I might still ice if you are swollen, but yeah, a doc would know betterQuote:

You're not going to get comartment syndrome in the thigh, four days after an injury to the butt. BTW worst looking butt I ever saw was in the OR dressing room--one of my partners turned his back on one of his goats. A pygmy goat. A girl pygmy goat. Black and blue from his waist to his knees.
The whole thing about ice and bleeding is a little suspect. While ice undoubtedly helps swelling its effect on bleeding is more complicated. The cold constricts blood vessels which stops bleeding--until the vessels dilate again. But cold also deactivates the clotting system, so the torn vessels don't clot off as well. In any case I doubt applying cold to the skin will do anything for deep bleeding in the butt--the cold doesn't get deep enough to contrict the vessels that are bleeding.
And OP--expect the bruising to keep moving down the leg. Gravity will see to that--and it doesn't mean you're still bleeding.
Have a friend that had a serious ass bruise that went down his leg. Chatted up people at the bar, wagered that if its not the worst bruise you have ever seen, I'll buy the shots. If it is, you buy the shots. We were well lubricated for at least 2 weekends :) I got pics somewhere, butt, you get the point... Heal up.
