What are you running in lately?
After years in Hoka Speedgoats I’ve recently switched to Topos in a few different models. I’m liking them. Bought a few pairs on sale before one of the last tariff clusterfucks.
Definitely some real pricey options coming out like Speedland, Norda, etc.
I have a pair of Merrell MTL Skyfire 2 Matryx Trail in the mail right now. First time trying these, will report back.
I still haven't found my perfect shoe. Recently I had some Inov8's I kept finding deals on that I liked enough to go through a few pairs, but they had durability issues that I eventually found unacceptable. I just tried some of Icebug's summer shoes but didn't like them nearly as much as their winter shoes. Honestly before that it gets hazy, but there was definitely churn.
Been using Merrell Agility Peak 5s and really dig them. Solid cushioning, great energy return, light and have a forefoot rock plate. Merrell has great sales pretty often. Picked them up on Black Friday for $50. Have some North Face I picked up for similar price off Sierra Trading Post. Has super foam and rock plate.
There's always some good deals if you keep your eyes out. I always have 1-2 new pair ready to go for when something craps the bed.
I've heard great things about the La Sportiva Prodigo Pro and Max, but need to wait for them to come down in price.

I've been lucky with shoes, as long as they fit they seem to be good to go.My buddy is a gear head and has given me 5 pairs of shoes (in mostly unused condition) over the last few years. He always finds something wrong with them, I just lace 'em up and go.
I have a super wide foot (Euro 40, EE width) so a lot of shoes are too narrow for me. I don't like tons of stack for scrambling so prefer to keep the stack to 25 mm max. Rock plate is also pretty much mandatory.
My biggest gripe is soles that have strips or dots of rubber with foam in between, as I've found that the foam between the rubber gets shredded and the rubber strips have a habit of tearing off before the lugs wear down. Give me wall-to-wall rubber. Of course, these Merrells I just ordered have exactly that style of sole, but I bought them from REI and am prepared to use that REI return policy if they disintegrate prematurely.

My penchant for bombing the descents is also pretty hard on shoes period. I'm usually lucky to get 150 miles out of a pair.
Are the Merrell MTL Skyfire 2 Matryx actually wide? I was a big fan of the Bare Access (especially the 4s) before they got discontinued. Right now I`m running in Altras - MT King, Lone Peak 6, and Escalante Racer 2 - and I really like the roomy toe box on all of them, with the MT King being the best IMHO.
I've never heard of a rock plate. Does that prevent your feet feeling most or all rocks under it? Is it super stiff? Sometimes the bottom of my feet feel beat up after long pointy rock descents. It doesn't stop me from running but reducing that feeling would be nice.
Got up to a few local ‘peaks’. I see these both everyday from town. Hadn’t been up one in over 15 years and was the first time on the other. Nice day up high.

Merrells generally run on the wide side. Historically it's been brands like Salomon and La Sportiva that are known to run super narrow that have been problematic for me.
I used to have a pair or two of King MTs. I had no idea they brought them back. I stopped buying them because for some reason they seemed tippy and I rolled my ankles more in those than any other shoe I've owned.
I also had a pair or two of Lone Peaks years ago. Can't remember which model, but either the 2 or 3. On sidehills I remember them having poor support, like my foot just wanted slide right off the sole. Since they're up to the 9 now I should maybe revisit them. Yes, just what it sounds like, a layer of stiffer material that keeps pointy rocks from penetrating straight to your foot. Stiffness varies between brands. Many retailers have it as a filtering option when you're shopping.
Yea I’d like to try those LaSpo Prodigio Pros but a buddy returned them cuz they were too narrow for him.
Some stoke from today. 2yrs ago this week I had a heart attack and, after being dead for a minute or so, came back through a miracle. A couple of stents and I've been good.
Today was my opportunity for an anniversary run and I wanted to get up into one of my favorite zones. 10mi and 4500ft. Not my fastest and a lot wasn't runable but it was good to get out and slay some demons. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ce999a70c2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8b6b259014.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b04b422a45.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6ceb5796ab.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b41a2b1a84.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...74e5e5584f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...20b95698fa.jpg

The simplicity of running is a big part of what always brings me back to it.
Yes, I was being sarcastic, but not by that much. You can easily spend $200+ on trail shoes these days and it's become effectively impossible to spend less than $150. People putting in legit mileage could easily be burning through a grand or more per year on shoes.

The elusive triple-post!
Phatty- That's epic. I'm stoked for you!
Phatty- I remember you posting about that when it happened. So glad you’re here and able to get out and run!
DTM- I agree re: simplicity.
Have been remaining fairly consistent and feeling quite good lately. Fall is creeping in. Got in a 25 mile/4k’ trail run last weekend. Testing things out for a potential run later this month.

Gorgeous, stapes! My wife has been feeling neglected, so I'm dialing back my big outings for a couple of weeks. Hoping to get a couple more in the books. Now with sunrise getting later I can hopefully get a few more shots like yours!
