Nice work! I'm hoping to get clearance to start running again the first week of May (broke my tibial plateau first week of January). R2R2R was my goal for mid October and my PT told me not to give up on it yet. Seeing this helps give me some motivation to build my strength back quick and be even more consistent with my PT exercises!

Well, I paid heavily for that upside down mountain run. The DOMS was the worst I've ever experienced by a solid margin. Plus I aggravated my meniscus and couldn't run for over a week.
I'm back on track now with a very comfortable and enjoyable 8.5 mib on my local trails today. I obtained a copy of "Sierra Trail Runs", which is good inspiration to train.

Finally able to get out on trails after missing the ski season with a broken leg/knee. My recovery is ahead of schedule and was given full return to sport after just 4 months. My legs have lost a lot of strength from being non-weight bearing for 6 weeks, but PT has been helping build it back.
Got out for a route up Tiger Mountain. 7mi and 2700k. Took a less steep route down the build up my base. Knee felt solid and no pain (other than soreness).
I haven't given up on my goal of R2R2R in mid October. We'll see how my training progresses. Just happy to be back out again. Stoked to be ready for the summer season. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7dfbd4baa7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7f220f7195.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0f78220e2f.jpg

Nice work Phatty. I need to get out and do some Tiger laps.</p>
Glad to hear you're doing so well, looks great.
Yea phatty! Nice to see you’re back out there. Always so nice to be back on the trails.

Thanks everyone. Very happy to be back. Was out with a buddy yesterday and we started scheming up some big runs for later in the summer. Now I just need the snow to start melting in the high country.

Stapes that frosty mountaintop looks amazing! And congrats phatty on getting back at it.
Have a running buddy who has done this run maybe the past 5 years on Memorial Day. Lyons CO to Estes Park. About exactly a 50k and around 6.5-7k vertical. I’d estimate 95-99% dirt, consisting of approximately 50/50 singletrack and dirt road/FSR. I was finally in town this holiday weekend and was able to join. Been wanting to get this done. Pace was very casual, jog the flats/downs and hike the ups ( and some of the flats), and I felt good after which is always a plus. Only 3 of us (forecast probably kept a lot away), which meant stops were minimal and quick. We only filtered water once.
We lucked out on weather and it ended up being about perfect. Cool, cloudy and foggy. Moody atmosphere. Then of course we finally got the storms and hail that had been forecast, but at least that held off until maybe mile 27-28. And no electricity/lightning due to the cool temps. But many years a lot of the route can be exposed, hot and dry. We all were digging the weather.

Good times!!! Great way to kick off summer season. Ready for the high country!
Well played, sir
Sick!
Solid! Self supported 50k gets into the hard to carry enough food range for me. What was your fueling strategy?
Awesome man.
Weird thing to complain about but being in SoCal where everyday is between 65 and 85. I’m craving some weather. I miss those spring days of 4 seasons in one day

Used Salomon vest w/ hydration bladder full of water. 2 flasks w/ Tailwind. Carried empty filter flask and filled it once. I think I had some water left in the bladder when I finished. The cool temps helped with water consumption.
Don’t remember exactly what I ate, I meant to take a pic of all my empty wrappers, but it consisted of:
Honey Stinger chews
Skratch chews
Precision Fuel chews
Precision Fuel gels (used the big 90g ones w/ twist top. Love these for longer runs)
PBJ sandwich
Handful of trail mix and some chicharonnes my buddy brought
I actually carried way more food/nutrition than I ended up needing. Pack was pretty full and I had plenty leftover.
Hey The Dude- good luck at SJS next weekend! Enjoy it!
High country is opening up…

Long story short I was in the best shape of my life in May, and took essentially 6 weeks off. I did pepper in a handful of runs, and was walking a ton, but no cardio.
Finally am able to get back on track starting today, went out for a 4 mile road run and got crushed. What used to be my easy 30 minute zone 2 cruise was a 42 minute struggle to keep my HR out of zone 3 and 4. Legs and lungs actually felt fine thankfully.
How long am I looking to get back on track? I'd like to keep adding fitness through training while I'm down in the flatlands this summer so when I get back to the mountains in the fall I can do some longer fun runs up high.
Stapes - Awesome pics! Absolutely gorgeous.
Yukon - I had to be non weight bearing for 6 weeks after I broke my leg. Started running again mid May. Strength and lungs are coming back, but I'm still a ways behind where I was before my injury. That said, I just set a PR on an 8mi, 3700 ft run here in Seattle. Patience will get you back in a month.
Ran Bandera Mountain outside Seattle yesterday. Flowers are popping and got up above the clouds. Legs and lungs are feeling stronger. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6c1c26fb9b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9fa679b63d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0e9be5faa2.jpg

Great stuff, boys!
Yukon - Dylan Johnson did a video about this subject at some point. I think the key takeaways were that the fitter you are the farther you'll fall, but you'll also gain it back faster than it took to get it the first time. Probably figure a month.
Thanks for the reassurances, a month is a while but it could be worse! Should have motivated myself to hit the treadmill more but boy are those things awful.
Fantastic pics by Stapes!
This topic is relatable. I strained my calf last October and after six weeks of short rest followed by re-injury over and over, I ended up seeing a PT who recommended a prolonged break from running (mainly to make sure I wasn't injured during a hut trip in late January). My wife was starting to get serious about running this spring so I jumped into the middle of her c25k training plan which was so painfully slow and low volume, but it was good to build back slowly and methodically. Then we did a 12 week Hal Higdon half marathon plan, which concluded with me pacing my wife on her first half, which was super cool. I finally feel like I can start doing some real mileage in the mountains and of course we're taking off for a 3 week euro vacation where I'll be lucky if I get a couple modest runs in a week. I'm still hopeful that I can be ready for a 50k by the first of October but we'll see.
My only advice when getting back into it is that it with a good history of base training it comes back pretty easily but at the same time don't be tempted to push too hard. The risk of injury due to overuse is high. Just because the long run feels good, doesn't mean that your body has the durability to bang out consistent high mileage without injury. Play the long game.
Anyone have recommendations for a “fast pack” day pack that can also be used for running? Think 15-20L. I was sold on the Salomon adv 12, but I went in the store and it seemed a little small. I’m in the dessert so needs to hold 3L of water plus all the typical day hike stuff. Maybe the adv 12 is fine. Now I’ve have been looking at the Salomon adv 15 cross season and black diamond distance 15.

I have an Aonijie 20L I bought last year for fast packing. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but hopefully soon. Seems nice and only ~$50 off Amazon. I also have the 30L which I've used for some overnight trips.

I pulled the trigger on that and two ultimate direction packs, a 15L and 18L (I’m surprised they make both). I’ll keep the one I like. All 3 were under $100. If I get serious about running again, I’ll buy a nice running vest, but for a day pack, spending a ton of money doesn’t seem necessary for me. I’ve been using a free work backpack and it’s been fine. I have nice 35L pack for more serious outings

DTM crushing it. Wow.
Forgot this one. Not sure why it displays as a PR instead of a cup, but this put me third all-time behind Jason Dorias and a friend of mine who has a sub-5 minute mile PR. The upper half is mostly ridge scrambling and scree fields.

Dang, DTM. Crushing it on the down! Great pics!
I've had a few good ones lately. Wirk/family combo has kept me from getting out on big days, but hitting the classics around Seattle. Big one out in Alpine Lakes Wilderness a couple weeks ago for 18mi and 6k elevation. Was awesome. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...27b8b4ec6f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...31f8f090f6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a49b477089.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...eee26b6e9c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8729d2a0c7.jpg
