Saddleback today was incredible. If that's all you needed to know, skip ahead to the photos now.
The snow report suggested groomer skiing until around noon, and I think it was actually around one when the ropes came down for the best stuff. I started the day on the Bent Chets, quickly went back to the truck for the GS skis. Between wide open (Grey Ghost), narrower and twisty (Red Devil) and featuring a sustained legit pitch (Tight Line), there was more fun groomer skiing to be had than I expected. Tight Line was decidedly firm, having not been groomed last night.
After a lunch break, I headed back out on the BC100s. The ungroomed section of Royal Coachman had mostly softened (and been opened), so I started looking for other ungroomed stuff off the Rangeley quad. I found a lot of pretty good skiing, some trails more bumped up than others, and a lot of fun skiing trying to stay out of the shady spots and dodging protruding rocks and stumps and such.
Then it was time for the really fun stuff. I saw someone making turns down Family Secret as I headed up the upper (Kennebago) quad, and it had clearly softened. After one run of that, it was over to the Casablanca glades, which had finally opened. The traverse over was a bit of work, but I figured that since the people ahead of me kept going, there must be something worth the effort out there. I ended up dropping into Casablanca 4, and yes, it was well worth the effort.
While the snow continuing to soften didn't help the traverse in or the cat track out, it kept most of the skiing in Casablanca pretty damn good. A few more glade laps, plus one down Warden's Worry, included the company of a guy I had met on an earlier lift ride; he headed down to refuel and hydrate, and I managed to get three or four more runs in up top before my legs begged for mercy (and I'm guessing patrol probably closed that Casablanca pod for sweep). One of those laps was to Muleskinner, and while I wasn't sure it was going to be worth the effort on now-manky traverses in and out, it certainly was. I met ClubhouseBMX Sunday, he said I look familiar and after a bit said "I just put my finger on it" and asked for change. Nice to put another face to a handle.
Bucket does seem to find the emptiest of trails, I should employ him on busy Saturdays to find the kook free trails.

Not sure if other's have seen this posted around on social media yet, but Jay Peak lost a long time lifty and all-around genuine guy the other day, Michael Pfaff, the crew chief for the Bonnie quad.
If you've skied at Jay any time over the past 15+ years, chances are you ran into Mike bumpin' chairs at some point throughout the day. His positive attitude, kind demeanor, wacky sense of humor, and strong work ethic epitomized the Jay culture; he was the heart and soul of the lift ops team and worked tirelessly to make sure everyone enjoyed their time on the mountain. If you were ever lucky enough to be lined up for first chair on a powder day and witness him waive the pirate flag, you know what a special moment that always was too.
I couldn't believe the news when I found out last night, I had just chatted with him on Sunday afternoon as he was running the show per the usual. I remember wishing him a Happy Easter, and him returning the sentiment and commenting how beautiful of a day it was. I will definitely miss his smile and witty banter as I load the lift from now on.
This is truly a tough loss for the whole Jay community, and my heart goes out to anyone who knew Mike, he was a special person and touched the lives of so many. Tell your friends you love them, and I hope everyone continues to have a fun and safe spring season.

Not sure you can read the screen grab but the dude is legend. I don't ski at Jay that often but I totally remember this guy. That's crazy he worked there 10 years and doesn't ski or snowboard.
