Off leash dog is one of the few things you will actually get a ticket for from a ranger in SD. But warning the owner of a rattle snake nearby still works best to get that dog back on leash. Works great with hikers/runners with earphones in, and with parents of obnoxious off leash kids as well.

Agree naming needs to be better. A lot of trails I rode this weekend have a USFS trail number, a trail name, and then something else on TF. And then there's Strava with different names for each trail and segment. Or does strava only show segments? Not a user. Lots of people only seem to know the strava name for stuff these days which is really annoying.

That said it's fun when you can get in and name a trail so that get's picked up rather than what the owner named it. We had a shitty trail show up in a local system that the builder called Rebel's Run, complete with cool metal trail sign. A friend got on Strava right away and named it No Flow, which summed the trail up perfectly in two words. The other half got named Slotcar after the rut that immediately formed down the series of too-steep switchbacks. I have never heard either section called Rebel's Run and the cool metal signs have disappeared. Minor victory. The trail flows a bit better now so I suggested changing the strava name to Low Flow. Or do I just create a new segment for that?

Both are based on user submitted data. Trailforks seems more complete to me in a lot of areas, though I've been surprised in some places where MTBP has been better. Originally MTBP was going to be hardcore about checking with land managers re trail legality and bike access. But TF has been good about that too, or at least the local admins have taken it seriously. Both seem to come down to who the local admin is. I like the interface on TF better. MTBP always wants to default to routes rather than individual trails which I find really annoying. And I like being able to tap on a trail and see the profile and your location on it right there. TF just seems more user friendly to me.

Helena was an early adaptor. Most of our trail system went up there in 2014, as a local GIS guy had been preparing to give the data to Skidmap. For a while coverage around MT was spotty. Since SWMMBA got one of their people on as an admin, SW MT has pretty good coverage.

There are a lot of cool reporting functions available to admins that help with land manager discussions. I’m afraid that the move to a paid service will cut the number of rider checkins and trail reports, but it is what it is.

I agree with everybody's posts, really. If the trailmaker wants the turn to go there, then there should be something to make you turn, like around a tree, boulder, whatever. You can see just behind there it's between 2 trees, but then the next turn is blind, (because: tree), so you come out hot, and can't make the bend easily. I'm just a little miffed that there's a mini-boom in cycling here, so the trails are starting to finally get fucked up, like everywhere else.

They make little changes to everything everytime they change anything and usually its for the worse. I got a 12 spd Shimano XT build on my new bike. I've already burned the clutch on the derailleur in about 500 miles, seems like a known issue as the dealer just sent me a new derailleur pretty much no questions asked. (I also know of one other person with a shimano xt 12 spd that already had to replace their derailleur). So they're new 12 speed drivetrains, likely garbage.....

Now they used to be a leader in brakes. I had two piston xt brakes on my bikes for years, really no problem. 4 pistions come out last year and I'm stoked! More pistons=more braking power, what's not to like. Well apparantly shimano decided to make the brake lever on their new xt brakes weaker. They thinned down the metal and about a month ago, I go OTB and bend the lever. I'm able to bend it back and finish the ride.... I immediately get home and find a Shimano XT brake lever online, sweet! I keep riding the old brake lever because I figure it'll brake eventually, may ruin a ride but I might as well use it till it brakes.

Saturday rolls along...... and it finally brakes. We're able to fix it on the trail using a tire lever, a little tape and voile strap. Works decently enough that I'm able to ride about 7-9 miles including a 2500 foot descent

I'm not worried either because I've already got a replacement sitting at home or so I thought. Well I go to replace the lever this afternoon and low and behold..... Shimano has made the lever a tenth of a mm thinner. These motherfuckers! Not only that, but its made the lever weaker and more likely to snap.

It’s not a safety thing, he just NIMBYed and #localsonlybrah’ed you. Those trails have been reserved for equestrian and hiker only use since forever, the horse riders really see them as “their trails” even sometimes sneer at groups of XC runners on those trails and fire roads.

I grew up in Burbank so I used to run through those trails from the other side of the hill from you. I used to ride my old grip shift Bianchi Timber Wolf up those trails also, got yelled at a fair amount as that was strictly verboten.

Good luck finding places to ride. You can find some decent gravel and trails out by Pasadena/Altadena/JPL, but not much south of there ... some shitty overused hiking bike-legal trail in Whittier I can’t remember the name of.

Also, Atwater Village or wherever around there is not the Eastside ... that would be Boyle Heights ese! I lived in Highland Park before it was cool and safe ... I hear it’s now expensive and the English speakers outnumber the Latinos????

There's an old video from Art's Cyclery that shows how to make a linkage guard from a piece of inner tube and zip ties. They do it on a Bronson, but I applied it to my Nomad 3 when I had that, and it worked well. Looks like you could do it easily.

I think it's hilarious that Shimano is so fucking slow and reluctant to change some things (like how long they took to come out with 12sp, their insistence on keeping ServoWave and whatever causes their wandering bite point), but they are constantly changing other little things that are really obnoxious to deal with as an end user (i-Spec A/B, i-Spec II, i-Spec EV). And why does their clutch require greasing every couple hundred miles, but SRAM's will go thousands? That said, I love my XTR 12 shifting. It's magical.

There are certainly more elegant solutions, but in the short term, just stick a piece of gorilla tape across the top of the chainstays so it mostly covers the gap.

If I pay for the monthly trailforks will the gps tracking get better? I swear at least half the time it goes wonky on my. Take my last ride. Unbeknownst to me, after one of the downhills, I hopped on boat and scooted across the lake then bee lined it back across the water to get on the next trail.

Possible. Though, this is a brand new device. And it did the same thing on a previous device.

And when I record on other backcountry trips with a different app I have no such issues whatsoever, only Trailforks.

You can flag their rides as wrong activity type. They are removed from leader boards if flagged. I do it a lot after the ebikers get 20 uphill KOMS on a single ride.
