Something about Guenalla Pass area...a weather funnel.
It's not a special area, powerful thunderstorms that can create a tornado just don't occur that high.
I'd say it's a very rare event that has happened to occur twice in 5 years. Nothing more than that.
It's not like the thing carved a 5 mile path through the tundra. A little funnel cloud and it was probably gone in 1 minute.
I think it's happened more than 2 times but maybe I'm misremembering.
I think there is something about Guenalla - it seems to get the t-storms first/early. Often if I'm hiking elsewhere in the Front Range under a perfect sky, I can look over towards that area and see thunderheads building.
Would love to see a link, but I highly doubt it. There are only a few cases of twisters spotted very high (one in the High Uinta, Sierra) in the past 30 years.
Local topography features can create all sorts of unique weather (hello NW Flow!) but I don't think Guanella is doing anything special.
This guy is just north of Idaho Springs.

How was the snow??
Decently frozen early thanks to clear skies and stiff breeze. Coverage isn't the best. Just hit the SE bowl and east bowl out of summit lot with scrambling to the snow in Boulder's. Corn ripe about 9-10:30. Didn't hit north as didn't seem to go down to the lake.Quote:

Thanks smitch, should be fixed! Argentine was fat, tons of snow on Sunday. It looked like there had been some somewhat recent cornice fall, lots of partially melted but still consolidated debris on the skirt of the chute we rode. Corn o'clock was 0930 on a NE aspect for us. Everything in the surrounded area still looks caked!

Im on a quick weekend trip from Utah, and looking to possibly ski Torreys (Emporer, Dead Dog or Tuning Fork) or maybe a Grays/Torreys combo, but also open to things that might be better with reasonable access. Also, has the snowpack transitioned to a more isothermal summer snowpack yet up there? Or if it didnt have a good refreeze(which it doesn't appear that it will), would I expect to be knee deep in wet snow?
...and for anyone weary of skiing with new partners...I have 3 years experience in bc, Avy 1, will average 1500'/hour uphill(maybe less at 14), notable descents for the season: Mt Sneffels Snake Couloir, NW Couloir of Pfeifferhorn(LCC), The Sickle(ID), etc.
^ I'll vouch for skiATL being a safe/competent/good partner, we've probably toured 30 times or more over the past 2 seasons
If you are interested in going out tomorrow AM for a warm up a friend and I are likely going to hit something smaller nearby there -- Argentine or Edwards most likely. Couple years bc exp, Avy 1, uphill rate depends on how much beer we drink tonight but not too slow. PM me if interested.

Please put those campfires out!!! My wife almost certainly prevented a grass fire at Pumphouse. She rolled up at 4 in the afternoon to see an unattended fire with 3' flames and embers landing in the grass 20' away. That fire that was "only smoldering" when you left at 11am, can reignite in the afternoon winds. You are 100' from the river. Bring a bucket. If your not near water, bring an extra 5 gallon just to but the fire out.

Still able to link up some decent turns this weekend on Mt Edwards. Everything low angled is suncupped, but steeper stuff still skiing well...if you don't mind getting up early since it slushes out by 9:30/10. We were about 30mins late this weekend as Leavenworth Creek Rd was a bit adventurous in the van.
