Bobby, the rescue pups remember where they were and really appreciate where they are now. Sometimes I feel a little weird being the center of so much love, but then I say pfff and love them right back. Time to go for the evening walk with my buddies. My GSP went into the rescue system before I adopted him for killing an outdoor cat. Had him for 18mos and have worked with him on and off e-collar to get him to respect cat space and not attack.
Been outta town a while and the care taker just sent this to me. Full on nap on a cats belly. Pretty big turnaround, proud of the little booger.

I got first pick and got the one I wanted. All the other pups were beauties too. Total mutt litter... Other than the pair of chocolates they all were different. Mom was brought up from Tennessee as pregnant rescue... Pups born in shelter.
The little fucker is even cuter than pic shows. Neither of them have marks other than white on chest. Pic looks like white on chin and nose, but there's nothing there on either. Beautiful dog with great personality... The whole litter was same way

Both my boys are rescues. The oldest a standard Poodle is two months shy of his 17th birthday. Although he has taken a turn in the past week and I fear his days are numbered. Possibly this week to be honest. Its tearing me up. But 17 years for a dog that started life abused, scared and with heart worm is a quite a run. I am sure I will cry non-stop when he passes or is euthanized, but right now all I choose to concentrate on is the second chance he was given. He has been a great companion for 12 years. A whole second life really.
My second is so much younger that I refer to him as the firsts grandson. He just turned 2 and is a golden-doodle. 80lbs of goofiness and love. He was given to a kill shelter in june of 2013, and placed in a rescue group, Carolina Poodle Rescue. We picked him up in late August of 2013 and he has lived with us for over a year. Needless to say he is a ball of energy when called upon but also a giant lap dog most times. My sons who are 8 and 10 are head over heels in love with him and he loves them. Almost like litter mates. Running, chasing, playing ball etc. He insists on riding with them to school every morning to drop them off at school. He sits between them in the back seat and has to watch them get out and walk into the school.
They also will all cuddle up and watch TV on the "dog" couch in their playroom. Its funny to come in and watch them all cuddled under a blanket. He genuinely seems to express gratitude towards our family's acceptance of him. Most folks who visit can be terrified of him due to his size, weight and giant white canine teeth. But he is sweet as can be and intent on not messing up this gig where he is spoiled and pampered.
This is Molly. She is a deaf white boxer about 4 years old, best dog I have ever had. Great personality, fun, ton of energy but very reserved most of the time. Guy that bred her was going to kill her because she was deaf. Daughter paid $100 bucks for her. She went off to obedience school and knows a ton of hand commands. Minds better than the kids.
Last week, Molly was diagnosed with lymphoma. Its fatal. I have shed tears since last week. She will undergo about 20 weeks of chemo, and we will get about a year with her. It isn't cheap, but something to be done. Not fair to a purely innocent pup.

Your a good man sicks. I have pictures on my desk of the kids and past fur kids. I think about my 2 departed buddies all the time. Luckily the 2 kooks with me now keep me so busy and make me laugh so much I rarely shed a tear from missing Kava or Shadow anymore. But ya, I still think about them all the time.

My boy Cordell is going down this afternoon. He's had a good run. I'm devastated, but its time and he's miserable. This kind of thing is weird to put out there on the internet, but I just don't feel like talking about it with family and friends, and this community has been so gracious to mags in my position before, so...
Anyhow, he was a really good boy. Be at peace Mr. The Dude.

A silver lining, we did manage to move up to VT while he could still enjoy the place. He owned our local woods for the last seven months.
Been a few months since my dog was put to sleep. Think about her a lot.

Damn it! I was dreading seeing this thread bumped back up to the first page. We had to make the decision to put our 10 y/o lab down on Monday due to complications from advanced cancer. The vet discovered a bone tumor on her left rear leg early in the summer and we made the immediate choice to have the leg amputated and go through chemo to help try to slow the cancer. She scooted around like a bad-ass three legged ninja dog all summer long and into the fall, but we found out in November that the cancer spread to her lungs. Monday I was a mess after bringing her in. Tuesday was worse coming home to an empty house at lunch time. I got the call from the vet that her ashes were returned today and I picked them up immediately and brought her for one last ride before taking her home. As strange as it sounds it feels like she's home with us now. I'm going to miss that silky head by the side of my bead every night. We had some great adventures......I miss my friend......RIP Maddie

So sorry for your loss, Happy. It's the absolute worst. We lost our lab when he was 9.5 to cancer. We still miss him dearly. We have another wonderful lab now, but the six months or so that we were without a dog were miserable. I'm sure there will be another furry friend in you future when the time is right.
Geez, fellas. Vibes to all and their pups. I think I wandered in here because one of ours had a pretty bad scare lately. Not ready to let her go and luckily I don't think she is either.

Thanks all. Almost adopted a fox hound this afternoon, but with a gimped leg right now I think the prudent move is to wait for summer. I miss the hell out of Cordy though. He was the best convalescence dog- ear scratch therapy works wonders :(
^^^^yep, I call mine puppy prozac, as my life is just so much better when they are around. With no dog in my life, I am one incomplete person.
Molly pup is in her 13th week of chemo. 7 or 8 more to go. Cost is about $2,500 for another year of life, maybe two. She is a great dog and worth the bucks.
Only one of the drugs kicks her ass, Vincristine. She is highly sensitive to it. No appetite, won't drink, dehydrates. Unfortunately, we are into the every other week cycle with it. After a day or so, she's back to normal.
16 year old malamute is getting closer every day. Doesn't do much these days but is still lucid and has here moments. Has a disk issue in her back so she can't get up very well and struggles with strength in her back legs. She takes meloxacam everyday and that helps. She's close but still provides me with a ton of happiness and I'm not ready. I don't think shes suffering otherwise I'd do the deal. Just a super old lady playing out the string. Sigh....

She's been a great dog and it's an exceptional run for her breed. Best dog I've ever had.
