For the consumer, USA made products that weren't directly impacted by the tariff will raise their prices to match the foreign competitors. But, obviously, plenty of US products are assembled using raw materials/components made in foreign markets so their bottom-line is higher too.
tldr; raise prices on common foreign goods = consumer absorbing the lion's share of that burden regardless

10% tariffs for China and 25% tariffs on Canada. Obviously a lot of upset people but there is a sense of betrayal that is rarely seen or felt up here. It is an active, deliberate step taking by Trump that has nothing to do with fentanyl or border security. That’s what worries me the most and why this is so different than just a trade dispute.
One odd move here in BC is they are pulling off all American liquor off the shelves from red states? Half a bottle left of Makers mark in the cabinet. Not sure whether to save it or get rid of it all tonight.[emoji28]

The reason the official statement mentions Canadian flows of drugs and migrants is not because these are actual issues. In order to exercise presidential powers to impose tariffs, Trump needs to operate under what are called emergency economic powers. Trump can only impose tariffs in the context of a national emergency, otherwise trade policy needs to be negotiated through regular political channels in the US Congress (the US Constitution is unambiguous that tariffs are under the jurisdiction of the Congress). Despite how horrifyingly bold Trump is in his actions, he actually has a very weak hold on Congress (there are 435 seats, and the Republican majority is only 5 seats). His tariffs plan is controversial, even among conservatives, as it will be economically devastating. Thus, he would struggle to act this boldly through Congress. He wants to make extreme gestures and break relationships and he needs the cover that a declared emergency gives him.merica will collect tarrif revenue BUT the economic slowdown will cost billions

A reasonable conclusion is that (i) the US's word has no meaning; and/or (ii) the US 's word changes every 4 years so effectively has no long-term meaning.
At this point query why Canada shouldn't seek longer-term partnerships with other powers. Europe for example. Perhaps even China.
