SoCal ain’t getting no relief.
Reporting that the Getty Villa is on fire. What an absolute shame.
We had hiked out of the Highlands on Friday, one of my first comments to my wife when we got home was that it was primed for a fire up there. It’s wild to me that so much development was approved with only four lanes of non-gated egress.

LA helis are grounded because Biden is in the area.
The severe winds are just starting now. With another fire kicking off above Altadena. Unfortunately, the likely downwind trajectory are lots of built out cities.
Pyne wrote an essay on fires and LA for a German architecture mag that coincidentally came out today: https://www.stephenpyne.com/blog
Scary shit. Is all of Pacific Palisades going to burn up?
Yikes.
1000+ structures destroyed, 28000 structures threatened, 70000 residents ordered to evacuate.
Crazy footage online, fire burning all the way to the beach.
Did it make it all the way down to Gladstones?
This photo blew my mind - lifeguard tower burning. Well, with 60 mph eastern winds blowing, nothing is safe.

Stunning.
Nearly there.

Gladstones was shown on fire and being put out by the fire department a couple hours ago. I think it was saved.
Looks crazy, I think this will be the next news cycle, Trump being a cunt ( same as it ever was ) and Trudeau falling on his sword is close to done
Oh, trump is guaranteed to say some astoundingly stupid shit about the fires and California, again highlighting a real world example of the Dunning Kruger effect.
Yeah, that lifeguard tower was one of the photos I found shocking. There was a dozer clearing abandoned cars from the road too, crazy.
"He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water (it didn't work!), but didn't care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid. I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA! He is to blame for this."
What a stupid fucking cunt.
Been reading "Fire Weather" by John Vaillant. A good read that's fairly terrifying, and offers some grim prospects for the future. There's stories of houses going from upright and habitable to completely leveled with nothing left but the foundation in 3 minutes.
Hopefully they can get the Palisades fire contained before it gets even worse.
Crazy. My wife’s been going there for 40+ years with her local LA family. Me about 30 years since know long her. Walked the beach a couple of months ago when we were visiting. Sucks to think about this being engulfed in smoke:

Sucks.
Now hearing wife’s cousin + family were evacuated due to proximity to the PP fire, wife’s family in Calabasas is ready to evac due to a different fire threat there and family friend was evac’ed from the Pasadena fire. Friend in OC says there ash everywhere even down there.
My brother and my cousin live near each other in Santa Monica and both evacuated this AM. At that time their places weren't in the mandatory evac area but now they are.
Hitting the news here. Horrible conditions. Vibes to everyone affected. Looks like we have sent down crews to help, but damn, those winds!
Yogachick and I both grew up there.
Looks like our old high school was partially burned.
Dunno whether or not my street survived, but a very nearby Boy Scout camp, the next canyon over, was leveled earlier today.
The southern fire “control objective” today for the Eaton Fire (near Altadena and Pasadena) was I-210. Lots and lots of homes and structures between the wildlands, where the fire was burning, downwind to the highway. The afternoon fire perimeter map (on watch duty) showed that WFF had kept it out of the downwind adjacent suburbs, which is remarkable.
My niece lives in Santa Monica, a block away from what was the evacuation zone. I guess that’s changed or they’ve decided not to wait any longer. They just left for Newport Beach. She said the wind was insane last night.
She wasn’t even supposed to be back until this weekend, but her finals last semester were postponed and rescheduled for this week due to the fire by Pepperdine.
Looks like part of the fire is getting awfully close to Riviera CC.
Sunset Fire in Runyon Canyon. Mandatory evacuation from Laurel Canyon to the 101.
The Sunset Fire looks bad for Laurel Cyn.
^^^ just saw that. Holy shit!
There's been a huge influx of resources today, and the conditions are better and the terrain is different. They have room to fight it from air and ground before it reaches structures. When a fire starts in Brentwood or the Palisades, it's already in a neighborhood and it's all about structure protection, and without air support, that can mean triaging whole streets of homes if there's no defense.
Not it isn't. Our reservoirs are basically full and LA county/city are at 100% full recall of all fire personnel. My buddy is volunteer out of Malibu and they are asking for ex-military/retired/any fire experience volunteers. Estimates are 3k+ fire fighters deployed. The wind gusted to almost 100mph. Add to that the topography of PP, and the hills in general makes digging containment lines next to impossible. The feedback loop on the wind is no fixed wing or helos can fly so it's all boots on ground. Gravity fed tanks which started full quickly ran down as they tapped hundreds of hydrants.
The blame game at this point is legit retard behavior. If LA had 10x the fire fighters this still would have happened. I've lived here 13 years and never seen wind like the last 48 hours and I now 50+ year residents who say the same. This was the proverbial perfect storm of dry conditions and insane Santa Anna winds. The heroics of the FD and others to even do as much as they have in such impossible conditions is what needs to be focused on.
This will take decades to rebuild from. I personally know over 20 people who have lost homes and we have a family in route to our place right now who have the shirts on their backs with them. Please consider donations to the red cross or other high efficiency charities. I told work to fuck off and am heading up with a chef friend to a ghost kitchen to cook meals for people at first light. Please do what you can or able to. Pray to whatever god your belive in/send vibes. We need it.
^^^ fuck, so sorry to hear. This is insane.
I saw one report of fire hydrants running dry in Palisades. Also reports of fire fighters encountering looters.
Glad to hear winds have dropped off, I had heard that they would peak tonight and could blow the fire south into Santa Monica. Hopefully they're not as strong overnight.
I have a few friends in Pasadena/Altadena area who have evacuated.
In some ironic timing the Flames are in town today to play the Kings. Game has been postponed....
