Nice fish!
Sucky on the waders, but aqs + tenacious tape will make them new
Glad you’re not hobbling around
Bifocals? Ha, yeah, i always thought wading was pretty easy until i couldn’t see where my feet were going!

Yesterday I went out just to be out. We seem to be on the downhill side of full runoff, the weather remains warm and sunny, but the snow is gone from most nearby mountain tops, and the water is slowly subsiding. However, the water is still about two feet higher than is good for wading, and it is still pretty muddy. There were fish rising sporadically, but aside from a couple small rises, the only bite I got was when I stepped into the water after tying on a small streamer with a SJ worm trailer. I had just let it fall into the water as a stepped off the bank into the water, and was surprised to see my indicator sink, I didn't hook the fish.
Later on I picked up a hitch hiker, a sign of things to come.

Nice Swimmy! We are going n full blown runoff with the Southy running at 19,000 cfs this morning. Did a quick float yesterday to check out the river and managed to dredge up a few but it’s going to be a bit before we are looking at any dry fly action.

Really active thread right now. Solid.
Committed to the Sweetgrass all morning and stuck a toad on a size 4 Orange Cat Puke. Really fun fight on a 5 wt.

Lovin' the feel of that rod.
Swimmy with an hudge brown, must be close to summer.
I'm going to be leaving town for a while, tomorrow, to live in the woods with a bunch of nonconformist freaks, then visit friends and family in Oregon, and preach the gospel to street people, before hitting my 40th HS reunion. I may also visit my buddy in WA who is living in a house with a 300 pound pig.
I won't be doing much fishing (maybe a day or two with Dad), so today I went out and fished a small nearby tributary creek I've never fished before. Upon arriving I discovered that I'd gone out without my license, so after cussing a bit, I drove home and got it, then returned to the hole I had been looking at, but sadly, there were two other guys there by then (about 50 minutes had passed). I drove up the road a mile or two to a FS parking area, and plunged into the bush.
Soon after getting through the tangle to the water, I found this logjam, and hooked two smallies, landing one. One took a tan/orange micro-chubby, the other a small black nymph.

I turned over some rocks after a while, and found these bugs, ISBDs sent me a fine, heavy headed stone that looked pretty close, and I strung a hare's ear off the back of it.
Attachment 494931
I was about to head down stream down a dry side channel, but first I snuck my rig through the shadow of this little grassy point, expecting to get snagged, the water didn't seem deep enough. But my bubble disappeared and alleluia, my day was made! ISBDs heavy headed stone ftw!

Downstream, after nearly getting swept away crossing the creek twice, I saw this drop-off into soft water. I cast over the current, did a big loopy mend, and bam! A healthy little cutthroat.

It was a good last day on the water before my journey, I caught three, and lost two, in three hours on the water (there was plenty of crashing through brush as well). Good luck, and tight lines folks!
Well our good luck dried up today as the bite pretty much turned off for us. Still seeing a few bugs scatted mid river but I think it is over and we are out of here tomorrow. Super fun couple of days though.

Went to check out some skinny water. Wouldn't normally Hotspot but I think this was a pretty cool collaboration that benefits us regular joes. And it's a bit rough to get into and I've only seen one person in 5years. Also I didn't catch shit and something was breaking a fuckload of branches causing an early departure with the dogs. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f451a3d6ff.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...aaac2c6198.jpg

New river, same game. Been up here a couple of times this week anticipating the arrival of the big bugs. Today I saw the first adult! Actually I saw caddis, pmd's, a golden stone, and a salmon fly. It is basically a bug buffet right now.
Dry fly fishing was a bit slow, nymphing was really good. Hoping that changes in the next few days as I'm back home for the evening but I've got the camper loaded and headed out tomorrow for a week or so.
Late June in SW Montana is hard to beat if you are trout fisherman.

Cross post to RV thread.
#Vanlife and I'd like something the size of this Yakima rod vault for the top of the van. I don't fish, but I want something for skis and extra stuff up top. The problem I'm facing is getting something under 20" wide (or so) as the AC is mounted in the center of the van and makes it hard to mount a normal width ski box. I did get my normal Yakima box up there, but it was hanging over the back by at least 18", maybe more, die to having to mount it so far back behind the AC unit.
Any ideas? Rod box, 10" tall and 6-7' long would be ideal. But they also seem trendy now, so $$$$, and I'm cheap. This Yakima rod box has terrible reviews, but the dimensions seem right.

Fun day today, picked up a 5hp Tohatsu off Facebook Marketplace. Gamechanger, trolled around streamers on Strawberry. Didn’t hit much till the afternoon, then killed it. My kid acts like he can’t row, but he can pilot an outboard,
We caught enough rainbows to put some into the freezer, I love the food saver vacuum packer.
Once again, on this morning at first light. I'm an early morning person anyway so this hatch is perfect for me.

This river doesn't give up nice fish on the dry easily. But I got a decent one today. Size 6 salmon fly.

And around camp we have a couple interesting birds. This is the Eastern Kingbird. It migrates from the Texas and Mexico.

Gonna get a little later start tomorrow as I have guests coming in from out of town. What an awesome time of year.
More amazing pictures, no wonder you have a gallery admiring your fishing. Thank you for sharing Swimmy!
Nice Swimmy. Killing it.
I won't bother posting my dinks but I loaded up the dogs and been putting on some miles and dunking a line in some less busy water. Fucked up my gate opening date so I took long way around. Bout to head to another camp after a (not) 5 dollar burger. Great time of year to live in Montana.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...414c9cd907.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7c0e6732f1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...00d28a8b7e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...a84a65ab62.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...de8ab1d547.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b0521a5d3b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...bde1f404b5.jpg

Heading to the Gunnison Gorge tomorrow for a 3-day float. Might be some samminfries, might be some rain, will be some good times.
I was 4 days early. Tried to convince the FS trucks to just let me in but for some reason they wouldnt....go figure, lol.
Still wandering around. Had a pretty intense thunder/lightning storm last night. Put on a good show but rain blew out the already high creeks, oh well. Gonna go check a different lake and creek in a few minutes.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9e53bfa80f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...357e5e540f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...aad0ad26cb.jpg
