I’ve been ragging on Palisades but it’s nice that OV has some black diamonds open. I definitely need some ptex.

Kirkwood was good today. Very little is groomed, the bumps on Zacks are super fun and chalky, you'll hit some stuff in there but it's ding your board up hits, not major injury hits. Sentinel was good, less bumped out fun chopped up snow. The stuff in between is skiable and more filled in then I expected, but I was cautious. The skied out stuff I was comfortable opening it up. The worst thing I had happen was hitting a superslick man-made patch at the bottom of zachs unexpectedly and falling on my ass

I'm annoyed by this entire situation and I'm new to squallyworld, so I'm a big part of the problem.
I'm actually kind of regretting buying a pass. My friend and ex-housemate didn't buy a Squaw pass this year. First time since 90-91, except for one season when he was at Crested Butte. That says a lot to me on how fd up Squaw has become. He opted for SB instead.
^^^^ Actually realizing there is there is a concert there this weekend and might be why spots are sold out.
To answer someone else question about mid week at Olympic Valley, I was there last Thursday and skied right on to every single lift. Even got a private cabin up the fun at around 11:30AM. Really was pretty empty.
So I doubt that the lot is filled with skiers this weekend, but people going to the concert at the Village.
Thats more as I expected.
And for sure its more than 9" Turx. You know they get so much more than the east side.
Casual observation: anybody notice the masses of Japanese tourists at AM and OV the last few weeks? I'm curious if Ikon is blasting ads in Japan. I've never really noticed it, en-masse, before. I feel sorry for those folks that traveled here for the shitty start to this season.
Hope y'all are doing well. Please snow...
Tahoe's Bryce Bennett just won the first downhill of the season over Kilde and Odermatt. Massive! Loved this part:
"Kilde, who started 10th, had already celebrated as if he had won after edging Odermatt, who started sixth. Kilde and Odermatt were already giving interviews when Bennett came down, prompting them to turn around and see what happened."That's how ski racing is, and that's why we love it," Kilde said."

So much this.
You have your reservation, you roll in, take a run or two, and leave for whatever reason before they ever get to your plate.
Not everybody gets there before first chair and stays till last chair giving them plenty of time to make sure they get your plate.
Last Saturday's visit I made a reservation on Friday, and was probably there for a total of an hour to an hour and a half.
That that can somehow count against me If they didn't scan my plate is absolute bullshit.
Yeah, the other thing is can you change the plate number after the fact if you decide to take a different vehicle? Or have to take a different one!
There are so many angles to this. Someone answers then another angle reveals itself.
I also go sometimes for just 90 minutes, but usually on weekends it’s harder for me to get in n out that fast. I work weekend evenings/nights tho, so can’t be there too long. If there are a boatload of cars, and I’m there 2.5 hours ish or less, they have time to check me? Doubt it
I'm glad to hear Alterra has a CSI unit to solve parking reservation glitches
I wonder if concert people know about parking reservations
It's literally just people walking around the parking lot punching in plates. There's no scanner at the entrance.
I don't remember linking my parking account to my pass, so I don't think they can confirm that way. I've been taking a pic of my truck in the lot each time I go.
Exactly. If they say you didn't use your reservation and you dispute it and your pass was scanned that day I imagine they'll let you off the hook.
Look, I can't see this as an evil scheme by Alterra. It's a lot of work and is likely causing them money. From a purely financial standpoint it doesn't matter to them--assuming the lot fills it doesn't matter to them if it's full of cars with resrvations or first come first served. They may have been under pressure from Truckee and Placer country to do something about the morning gridlock and maybe they actually care about the guest experience,. The one thing I can see in it for them is maybe more people will choose to stay at Alterra properties--what do they own besides the village condos?--but I imagine those are already pretty full weekends already.
Seems like a lot of complaining about problems that haven't happened yet. Anyway, I'll do my weekend skiing, if any, at SB and RG.
Leaving the ghettos today I stopped at Deer Park lot and there is what looks to be a generator and temporary(ish) cell tower there like they put out during fires. I assume thats for the parking validation.
btw skied counterweight gully (I think) and it was awesome. High yellow is pretty much tracked out. As soon as roundhouse is ready at the bottom it should open. Same with summit it's just not as ready at the bottom
Anyone know of a qualified mechanic/shop that can do a pre purchase inspection on a 2001 Land Cruiser in the truckee/reno area? Lexus dealership is booked out a week and the Toyota dealership says they can’t touch it [emoji849]
obviously you have those receipts. if you used a passholder discount they do too.
aforementioned centerweight gully

I wonder how good the Icon data analysis team is. If they aggregate all the data in one place determining whether someone shows up seems reasonable. I would look at scanned license plates, sales at stores and lodges, whether pass was used etc.
The simplest way to enforce reservations is to only allow reservation holders plus some extra people to account for car pooling to use their passes on reservation days. Parking employees could scan passes of non carpoolers to prevent abuse of people reserving extra people but not carpooling. Of course season passes now become just a fee you pay to have the right to make a reservation. Wait, they already have…
In theory they have the data but I can almost guarantee they don't know how to properly utilize it. I work in the data/analytics field and it never ceases to amaze me how even huge billion dollar+ companies don't know their ass from the elbow when it comes to capturing data and utilizing it effectively. Especially since the parking thing is new for them.
Just saw HV will have parking reservations in the morning at Cali base, starting this weekend. They are opening lifts in a patchwork manner. Coupla NV lifts/runs available from Gondi. Or coupla runs and lifts in CA from that base.

You guys are aware reservations have been used at other ski resorts the last few seasons? Not defending it because I do think it's a pretty fucked up thing to do to your customers, but I'm guessing they have a decent idea of how this thing should work. But it's pretty clear the best solution for everyone is to ski Bear Valley and stay far away from Tahoe.
AI has some thoughts on this sitch... I'm surprised he nailed it so well.

If I can't park, I can't park. If I'm hurt, I'm hurt. Simple as that. It's not about that at all. But it's easy to talk about and sum it up when you just talk about parking; we're sitting here, and I'm supposed to be the franchise SLAYER, and we're in here talking about parking. I mean, listen, we're talking about parking. Not SKIING! Not SHREDDING! Not SLAYING GNAR! We're talking about parking. Not SKIING; not SKIING that I go out there and die for and SHRED every SKI DAY like it's my last, not SHREDDING, we're talking about parking, man. I mean, how silly is that? We're talking about parking. I know I'm supposed to be there, I know I'm supposed to lead by example, I know that. And I'm not shoving it aside like it don't mean anything. I know it's important. I do. I honestly do. But we're talking about parking, man. What are we talking about? Parking? We're talking about parking, man!
We're talking about parking! We're talking about parking... We ain't talking about SKIING! We're talking about parking, man! When you come to the arena, and you see me SLAY GNAR... You see me SHRED, don't you?
Look, I hear you. It's funny to me too. It's strange to me too. But we're talking about parking, man. We're not even talking about the SHREDDING, the actual game of SKIING, when it matters, we're talking about parking.

just playing...
Hope it snows soon so we can focus. Last weekend was good enough on the N. side of Castle on Sat. to go back and do it again on Sun. Measured about 100 cm at 8000 ft on the north face with ~15 cm supportable/boot pen. on top with wet facets below. The cornice at the top of the gully to the skiers left at the ridge above the rest stop had broken off and the entire skiers left side had slid to the ground with a big debris pile in the bowl at the bottom [~650 t?]. Attachment 479568. Saw a few bad-ass split boarders schralping it up. Always nice to get in there before the snowmobiles.
