Dammit! THIS is the shit I've been complaining about. Saw a Model X that was totally crushed, completely burnt to a crisp, and didn't even resemble a vehicle at all, and THAT was going for over $20K. Damn. Tesla parts must be REALLY hard to come by if people are parting out these examples that have nothing usable left and they're going for such exorbitant prices. Eff this car market!

It's not just that. There are $2000+ repairs that, of course, a Toyota owner will go for, because even at well over 100K, the car's still worth a fair bit more than that (and it's going to be a reliable car after the repair, right?); whereas the same problem on a Chevy Cruze will be "eh, junk it." Thus, a rep for quality and reliability is somewhat self-perpetuating.

That said, Toyotas actually do amazingly well. Our Prius V at 130K is just starting to have the kinds of little annoying problems that a Subaru (Soobs are fairly well regarded for long-term reliability) would be having at 80K; and well before 130K a Subaru (or anything else) would probably have had a pretty significant problem to deal with.

As for Consumer Reports, they're pretty good in their most familiar domains. Recreational gear or something, forget it; I've seen bike reviews that are a joke. And with cars, you need to read between the lines, to make sure the factors counting towards a higher or lower score are things that you even care about.

Our wedding car was a 61 Rolls, owner/driver had to do a couple stop/start shenanigans within a block of leaving the wedding venue. Would recommend!
