He's fine. C4S, what a great spring ski ride to the mountain.
Agree to disagree. As BB points out, it's really a matter of effort. Where there's a will, there's a way.
Finally, someone bringing a standardized TGR measuring stick. Well done.
Agreed. It belongs in Wagon Stoke.
I need to get a pic of this little old Civic from around here. Snorkel, plastic fenders, camo paint. About 2" off the ground and so small a few people could pick it up. It's parked near a popular trailhead in town so you Missoula maggots probably know what I'm talking about.
I don't get it. But hey, if you have to ask, right?
This is crazy-ass awesome. Any know how complicated/expensive it is do so a lift on these? Would be a fun project on the right donor car.

There's a sweet one here in town that's even gnarlier with a brown camo wrap, it's definitely well-appointed and well-used.
Re lifted civic, a buddy in Denver rallies CRX's on the side (like Pike's Peak and shit) and has toyed with old civics, too. It's kind of a thing.
Caught a last second crappy pic of some type of wrap on new truck

edit: terrible pic but best I could do short notice. The wrap was supposed to look like patina I suppose. Also had a logo on it but could not read it, thought that was the worst advertisement ever, you cant figure out what is on the side of the truck.
A couple from yesterday... not a scratch or spec of dirt on either of them
Ram... 12, if you count the front steel bumper, brush bars and light bar as separate items.

I haven’t been participating so I’m gonna need somebody to count up the points for this one.

That is a lot of stuff on that Titan. Even if they are headed to the river for two days. They should have put a couple bikes on there for the full effect. That was a bike rack on the back?
I believe it is a bike rack. I didn’t even notice it was there until I looked at the pics when I got home. I would say they’re on the way to the beach. There’s a NJ state park nearby that lets you drive on the sand if you’re properly equipped and have fishing gear but I don’t see any poles on there.
The poles are probably in the rocket box.

Caught a good one on the way home from the bike hill today Attachment 372714
Rooftop Tent
Awning
Recovery boards
Roof box
Big rack to put all this on, ostensibly to put bikes in the back?
Bike rack sans bikes
Not pictured but present:
Sliders
Lift
MT tires
And of course the fucking thing was spotless. The traction boards have never seen dirt. And of course none of the toys that one might use with a rig like this were present. Also I believe he turned into the grocery store.
Question: Are you more of a poser if you leave mud on your truck? I tend to run my trucks through the wash when I get them excessively dirty for a number of reasons but maybe I should keep it gnar for street cred?
Add truck nutz to the list? Bonus point for the cock and balls drawn in dust on the back window LOL

More serious note - saw this on a ride yesterday. Ouch. Wrecker driver didn't strap down the loose RTT before driving off. Looks like a five +.

Absolutely a poser for leaving mud on for days. 2 days max until it’s washed off. I’m planning on 20 years out of my T4R so I take care of it. Walking into Lowe’s yesterday and a 2500 rolled by covered in well dried mud. All I could think of is how he probably spun out on some farmers field to throw mud all over it thinking it looks cool. With his nearly bald tires he sure wasn’t wheeling anywhere.
Gotta say I don't understand the appeal of the roof top tent.
Do you carbon date the mud to be judgemental about someones poser status then? Meh, if I've spun enough mud up that it's on the windows and it blocks view, then I'll search out a car wash. Otherwise, I live on a dirt road and it's going to be dirty anyway and I'm at the point in life where I can't care less what some bro thinks of me.

Neighbor leaves theirs on the car all the time, but car is always there (at least the rare occasions when I’m home) When do they use it?
Wifey and I love watching drunk front range posers try and get into their rooftop tents every time we go to Moab. It is always a perfect progression of emotions from exuberance for having one to annoyance trying to climb into it. Only a mild consolation prize after we watch them douche up the area by building another fire ring, trample a new trail 5 feet from the other one, then blast dubstep until 1 in the morning, all while talking really loudly about their sweet 5k mountain bike they will beater down somewhere the next day.
Maybe buy a cot and have a clean camp?
Ever been in a tent and looked out to see a moose grazing 20’ away? It’s cool and also reminds you tents don’t offer any protection against hooves.
Yes. And I guess moose are a huge problem down in Moab like Adironrider is talking about. I bet 90% of people with RTTs have not seen a moose. Hey, I had an RTT when they were new around here and I got a screaming deal from the guy wanting to bring them to market. It was a pain in the ass.
There was that one time at a festival when a drunk guy walked into the side of our tent in the dark, so there's that. All the animals I've been around in hundreds of nights of tent camping seem to have known better than that though; and if you keep food out of the tent, mice won't bother either. I kind of get it for middle-of-nowhere dispersed camping, where you can't always find a flat tent spot on a dirt road in the dark.
I have an RTT on top of my motorcycle trailer. Just spent 10 days in it in Moab and Sedona. It is bigger than a king sized bed, and more comfortable than sleeping on the ground. Setup takes a few minutes. Much easier to level a trailer than stake out a tent on rocks. We had some pretty big winds and a little rain and the tent faired much better than some ground tents we saw that got shredded by the wind. It is nice to be strapped down to a heavy trailer. RTTs are generally much stronger material than your ground tents.
I see roof top tents making a lot more sense done that way (attached to a utility trailer) than on top of someone's Subaru daily IMO.
Lots of good reasons for a RTT. Putting a RTT, rack and a bunch of stuff in a rack which raises the center of gravity makes no sense to me on a vehicle that is supposed to be “wheeling”.
Hey, there are reasons for them. I've had many good nights of sleep in an RTT. The pain in the ass factor outweighed owning one for me though. Just like my 90% haven't seen a moose comment, I bet 90% of the owners are not getting the benefit of them other than looking "overlandy". And this thread is for scoring overlandy points.
Well, duh, but for all the “micro sharing” and “fractional use” folderol apps nobody has bothered to come up with a reasonable and affordable solution for having the gear the 10% of the time you actually use it. The moose was in a NPS campground, not exactly rugged wilderness :rolleyes2
Isn't that G.O.T.O.S. though? Own it 100% of the time. Use it much less. Everything is affordable with credit.
And music festivals are one of the best reasons to own a RTT. I loved it for that. But drunk dudes still run into the ladder. The last festival I used one at, I had to bribe a dude with gatorade to wake up and stop leaning on the ladder so we could get down. He was wearing pee pants.
At least 25 years before RTT became a thing and I still live to tell the tale.

And you are fucking car camping, bring a memory foam if you are gonna get all princess and the pea. RTT are dumb.
I get the appeal of a RTT and not having to sleep on the ground like some kind of god-damn animal. But can’t I just slap a sheet of plywood on the roof and use the tent I already own and save a couple thousand $$?

I use a big canvas springbar tent, which is perfect for family use, but if I were single, a hard shell rooftop tent would be tempting for how quick it would be to set up and how you wouldn't need to find a spot without uneven rocks/something to hold stakes. That's assuming I was driving a vehicle that I couldn't just sleep inside for some reason. I don't really understand the appeal of the soft side rooftop tents that take a lot longer to put up.
