Submitted my claim on 10/29 and received a reply with a shipping label today. Agree they’re more than likely slammed.

They should have borrowed Hillary's email server
I got this email today... Sent my beacon in about 10 days ago, so this means they've received it I assume?

Dear Pieps Customer,
Your case is very important to us. At this time we are taking in thousands of beacons and working hard to address everyone’s needs as quickly as we can. Please bear with us during this process, as we expect wait times to vary between one and two weeks, depending on number of claims and availability of replacements.
Sincerely,
Pieps Customer Service
Mine just was received by BD in SLC today at noon, got the same email ^^^ about an hour later. They probably would have received it faster via the fedex express label they first sent me, but no pick-up in bumfuck nowhere BC for express so I had to get a ground label. Oh well...
Mine was received per tracking update last wed, but I’ve not gotten any followup emails
Just got my "hold on, we're overloaded" email (about 7 days from receipt of beacon)
bold is my emphasisQuote:

How to properly dispose of one of these beacons.

Fuck it, I just bought a Mammut Barryvox. Will keep my old DSP as a backup, or possibly trade it if I get a coupon. The public perception factor is a bitch. Even if I show up with a beacon that has a strong switch, I’m gonna be judged as an idiot. No go.
Just did the same, low hopes for getting a replacement from BD before I want to get out. I haven't even gotten a response yet.

I disagree with you guys. I will continue to use new Pieps/BD beacons and I am just fine with my partners using them. I’m just not the type to jump in with the social media mania.
i sent mine in & told them i'd lost confidence in it given the slide/switch design had been updated twice to get away from the plastic detent
given its age/generation, i asked for a significant discount towards a new unit
we'll see how they respond
[i also had a directly affected in-warranty unit to turn in as well]
Mine worked too tho there haven’t been software updates in a while
I'm sending mine in, but I wouldn't be bothered skiing with anyone who was aware of the potential issue and had evaluated their beacon and found that it seemed to work fine--the direct risk is to the person wearing the beacon, and if I'm skiing bc with someone, that's already an endorsement of that person's ability to evaluate risk.

I should clarify that I take people skiing into backcountry huts. Not a good look when your guide has to explain how his beacon “is one of the good ones, not the bad ones.”
you can help kill the hype
part of a guide’s job is to educate
I understand. As a patroller I have many of the same responsibilities.
Sending mine in today. They responded to my initial request with the 100 buy up deal. I reminded them that I was well within the 5yr. warranty extension. They got back back to me and apologized for their oversight. Make sure you help them be aware of your extended warranty if you have it.
Agree 100%. If a partner or client is hung up on a brand and their issues with said brand can't be resolved with the explanation of "this is not a recalled beacon," then I think there's a larger issue with that persons perception and understanding.
For me avalanche safety is still a concept of the total package of products and skillsets. No persons skillset can be infallible and no product should be trusted as inherently fail-safe. You need to constantly work and improve your skills and constantly understand and improve your gear. I sent our DSP Sports in to be be able to get a better product, not because I assume that different product will absolve all possible issues.
For those of you are paying $100 to replace a beacon out of warranty, the Pieps Pro and Powder models are now back in stock. I'd order quick in case stock disappears quickly.
if anyone needs a loaner I’ve got one
funneh
but I ain’t kidding
I have a beacon or two to loan out to folks that might need one.
Still waiting on my replacement as well, so far I'm stuck in the "this might take a while" email. I won't have any problems using a new Pieps/BD beacon, they're still one of the better ones out there IMO. Other companies have issues, too. Anyone else remember the Ortovox M2?- that was a way sketchier beacon with a faulty battery compartment.
I had two partners with the M2 that I discovered were not transmitting at the trailhead check. Light tap on the beacon- working. Another light tap- not working. And in one of the two, the replacement did the same thing. Sketchiest beacon I've ever seen, thankfully they're too old for anyone to still use them.
^ Interesting -- and scary!
They still work great though as targets for beacon testing, since the longer slender housing makes the transmitting antenna very easy to align accurately for testing purposes.
I contacted them ~10 days ago. Crickets.
Last I heard from them was. Beacon over 2 years old is eligible for the $100 upgrade to a new unit. Which unit, I don't know? I did ask, but no answer yet.

When I told them in the RA email that mine was less than 5 years old and I had registered it online to qualify for the 5 year warranty, they said I could get a free beacon of my choice from their current lineup. Have yet to receive the beacon.
I had another Pieps Pro that I bought for my son at evo - took it to their warranty dept. and they swapped it out for a new Guide BT, charging me the difference in the prices (~$24).
atta boy
I dropped off my beacons at Black Diamond yesterday. The guy working there said a new batch had just arrived and they estimated a two week turnaround
^^ good to know. low tide so no rush from my side.
