Lupo Pro HD thread

I just got the new Cabrio LV 130 in the mail to replace my old Lupo Pro HD's (which I'll keep for the little bit of touring I do). I tried on the new boots in the living room, and I gotta say, I am not super stoked. The upper cuff pivots very easily and the plastic feels thinner and weaker than on the Lupo. I felt like I was practically collapsing them just flexing into the floor. Definitely a lower instep as well, which I guess will be great for most people but the high instep of the Lupo was perfect for me. They do not feel any wider in the midfoot but roomier in the toes. I compared both boots while wearing my zipfit liners.

I probably should have done a little more research before ordering, but I had a good opportunity for a deal. Anyways, I think I'm dumping these and tracking down a Krypton.

p.s. has anyone figured out how to DIY Lupos into Lupo Airs?

Thanks for the review. To make a lupo into a Lupo air all you need is the rear blocking mechanism. Not sure how difficult it would be to order that part from dalbello.

Luke warm reception from diehard Dalbello fans at the shop with the new Cabrio. People with no prior experience are fairly stoked.

To me and everyone else, the ankle and forefoot are much much roomier than the pro/krypton. Feels more like the ax but with less instep and forefoot height.

The plastic feels more like the Panterra and seems cheap. I’ve yet to work on it. The ankle buckle has a clip on it because the buckle doesn’t want to stay closed with much tension and when you overflex it, it would definitely pop out. Interesting.

It fits more like a normal mid volume boot. The old lupo lasts were strange fitting. Worked for some people, but weren’t normal. Really high over the entire foot and shell fit long, but fit short (because of the ver exaggerated heel pocket that most people had trouble getting into. The new boot has straightened that out.

I still think there will be no issue putting the lip tongue on the cabrio free.

First ‘professional’ reviews (albeit brief) I’ve come across thus far of the new line, fwiw. Includes a section of (even briefer) individual tester comments.

May give a try at some point, but this off-season was able to score a fresh set of green Pro HD’s for $299, so couldn’t pass that up. They should keep me satisfied for at least the next few seasons, if need be. And I’m sure more deals will show up here and there as places continue to clear out their stock of the ‘old’ stuff..

That's a pretty weak effort at a review and Im not sure what 4.25 for "anatomical fit and initial feel" means. 4.25 out of 69?

Btw curious if anyone’s been running a zipfit liner in the Lupo/Krypton shell.. If so, which model of zipfit, and of course, how’ve you liked it??

Currently using a the stock ID wrap liner from the panterra 130 in my Lupo Pros, which has for the most part been great, and I’m a big fan of wraps in general, but just wondering about the zips for this particular application…

I run Gara LV zips in my 22/23 Kryptons.

I love them. Not sure what else there is to say! No issues. Just money Zips.

I came to the darkside last season.
Using a Freeride in a Lupo Ti (the old translucent lime green clog).
The first few days were honestly not very pleasant, although they skied great.
It took a few days (6-7) with small tweaks before I was sold (I did a fair amount of early season
skiing so it made the break in process tolerable).

After that, they got better every day I skied them.
Ski tightness all day long (and comfortable) on some occasions.

I ran across some Sidewinders that might be even better (don't have them in hand yet).

Did you heat mold them right before skiing in them?

Amunre, if you’re looking at touring in your boots, I’d go GFT. If you want your boots to be stiffer, and you already have B tongues, check out the Gara.

I did the hot water bottle method prior to skiing and skied them a few days.
Then mold again (hot water bottle).
Had move up the laces a eyelet to get them off my instep.
Tape over a couple of countersunk rivet holes that were vexing me.

I'm extremely happy I stuck with it, a few times during the early days were objectively painful.
Now I'm in boot Nirvana.

I’ve been running Zips in both Kryps and Lupos for about 6-7 years and, like everyone has said, they’re awesome. Come to think of it, I’ve never even skied either of those boots with Intuitions

When I bought Zips to use in my Lupos I had to do a slight big toe punch. OG Lupo SPs (still rocking them, rebuilt a few times…) and Garas. I think the extra cork in the heel pushed my foot a mm or two forward and that was enough to touch a toe in my tight shell fit.

But otherwise - great product. Hype is real.

Ive run Gara LVs in my Lupos for 2 years as well. I use my stock liners for touring. The zips were so painful when I first put them in my boot pre-molding, like they were going to sever my achilles (couldn't bear wearing them in the house, let alone skiing them). But after a few trips in and out of the oven, they became so awesome. I added a bit of cork last spring as the tongues and inner ankles started to need a little more padding. But as most people with zipfits agree, they are freaking awesome.

If anyone needs a pair of Pro HDs with only 20 or so days on them, and live in Norway, I have a pair for cheap. 26.5. Gw+Alpine soles, original liner really shit the bed, so I cut them to pieces for a very failed frankenliner project. They include, therefore, fresh new raptor wcr liquidfit liners.

I can confirm all this. The angle of the new middle buckle pushes your foot down, not back. Feels like I'm skiing the handlebars in a high volume boot. The buckle also pops up while your skiing. Disappointed with it.

Are you using the clip on the ankle buckle that is supposed to hold it closed? Super lame that it needs that but it seems to work.

If anyone has an extra Cascade Designs walk mode latch with increased forward lean, I would take it off of your hands.

I had the problem on the original Kryptons where the ankle buckle would blow open on flexing. I got a locking rossi race boot buckle to fix it.

I'm mighty conflicted about getting these new boots or just some older lupos. Seems like the 26.5 size is scarce in Europe at the moment.

I've got some 25.5 OG Lupo Carbons, which I love dearly, but 25 is ballerina size for me and while they ski perfectly, they are just annoyingly short. I can't wear them skiing with my kids, I can't tour in them anymore, but because I do most of my personal skiing in 2 hour blocks they are still well loved.

That said moving back to 26 isn't going to fuck up my skiing at this point (touring boots already there). The Carbrio Free "Light" with Grilamid shell seems like it might be a clean buy. I've got my own wrap liners, and I could swap over the removable tongue if I felt inclined. But I might just go skip the Free version and go full alpine.

I like the talk of the low instep too.

Slack ski and prioritize down so believe the Roxa is out (weight), unless I'm wrong on that. Ideally strongest in class sorta thing, mated to a hybrid binding and probably a 191 VWK.
If in the conversation, are parts (tongues specifically) swappable from Lupo/Krypton to the new stock?

I went from Krypton Ti/Lupo HD to the Recon Pro/Mindbender. Love the fit of the K2 boots, I just worry about the plastic. I've seen a few instances of shells cracking. My bootboards didn't last long in the Recon, they shattered one morning when I was putting my boots on (zipfits).

Tough to say. I skied a Solly SMax carbon 130 between owning Dalbello and K2 boots (I cracked both my Krypton, Lupo, and finally the SMax) and switched to zipfit from intuition. There isn't a big performance difference between the Dalbello and K2. Both provide plenty of power to drive big skis at speed.

I went to Lange last year and the were so upright, I never got settled & struggled a bunch.

I have some Fischers and Atomics for this season & carpet testing they feel great & the lean is more Lupos.

You sure? I have Lange xt140s and Lupo pro hd too, but the fwd lean on the Lupos are definitely more upright. So the other way around.

Lange advertises 12 degrees. Atomic Hawx is 15+-2, so 13 is the most upright you can go.

I remember my old FTs had plastic inserts for forward lean adjustments, but don't remember the exact numbers

the Lange xt3s are 12º and the Lupos are 11º. So the Lupos are more upright. You can add more to both boots if you like though, through various mods.

This. I had the Cascade Design link + a heel drop & a spoiler going to ~ 16; the Lange really does not accommodate as much.

Some day someone will be walking through the Dalbello factory and see all those discarded 98mm Krypton and Lupo molds sitting around, offer to buy them, and start a "new" boot company . . .

Sounds good. Luckily there's like 10,000 lupo variants on sale on the used market to keep us horders happy.

I was wondering after googling around and of course K2s were showing up.... slow here :-)

I just can't see myself on anything but Lupo for long into the future. I'm working on a super striped down version to get me closer to 1k touring weight. But love my HDs for regular skiing. I think I've gotten over the Lupton mod, I just don't think I'll notice.
