I was working directly with the people actually designing the tires for those maxxis reps when the new tires and naming conventions happened. What I said is exactly what happened. About two years ago they started some different molds for OEM tires. It looks like that's what they're selling as 'normal' 2.3 tires now. I guess you're right on what actually gets sold now. Why they even still have ones called 2.35 I have no idea.
I'm not clear on what you said previously. I just went down in my basement and compared the casing widths/sizes stretched out FLAT, unmounted, of various 26" maxxis tires:
Old 2.35 DHF - narrowest by far, same as some current gen Schwable Nobby Nic 2.25 tubeless I have.
2.30 DHF DC and 3C, DHR2 DC, Minion SS, Aggressor (mounted now but checked previously), 2.25 Ardent, 2.4 DHR2 ST 42a Exo non-tubeless euro market model - all the casing sizes are the same, about 8-10mm bigger flat than the old 2.35 DHF
Old 2.5 DHF 1-ply Steel, 2.5 DHF 2-ply steel 3c and 42a, 2.4WT DHR2 3C - the casing sizes are the same size, about 5mm bigger flat than the 2.30 etc casing.
2.5WT Shorty, 2.35 Ikon TR - the casing sizes are the same size, about 5mm bigger flat than the 2.4WT DHR2 / 2.5 DHF group casing.
Hope this helps. So overall, you could call the old 2.35 DHF a 2.1 by casing width, but IMHO it's more like a 2.2 by the knobs. The old 2.5 DHF is definitely bigger than the new 2.30".
Bummer about the 2.4 DHR2 ST, I was planning to run that in the front with the 2.4WT DHR2 3c in the rear, but won't now that I know its actually smaller. Reviews implied that the 2.4WT version actually had a smaller casing because it was intended to be used on a wider rim, but the reverse is true, they aren't even the same! I may pick up a 2.3 DHR2 3C to run it with, or maybe the 2.4 non-WT 3C version?? I could run it with the 2.3 DHR2 DC I have, but the imbalance in compounds would be severe. While the casings are the same, the knobs on the 2.4 vs. 2.3 are much bigger.
On the last legs of my Schwalbes this month. Been a superfan of the Magic Mary/Rock Razor combo but been wanting to try Maxxis again.
Was thinking of doing Aggressor on the back instead of Minion SS, but after a week back east I don't think I'll need a back tire with actual knobs until it's regularly wet out. Plus, #doyouevendriftbro
Anyways, I can get a pretty good deal on either a 29x2.3 or 29x2.5 Minion DHF, but unfortunately only dual compound. No 3C available, which is a bummer, but I think I'll survive, won't I? Or do I man up and spend twice the money to get the 3C version?
Will it be worth adding another 90 grams to the front wheel to get the 2.5 version? Gotta pedal that sucker around, but this'll be the bike I'm be riding any lifts I get to ride with.
For the rear, I'd get DC Anyway.
Get the 2.4 3C for the front. You'll appreciate it.
2.4 dhr2 ST exo seems wider than the 2.3 new dhf dual exo in 26". Im running thus combo (dhr2 front dhf rear) and it rules, I really like the ST compound up front.
Just refreshed the herd.

Fuck it. Ordered. 2.5" 3C exo for the front and 2.3 minion ss exo/silkworm for the rear. Brap!
From another forum. Funny:
Maxxis tyre casing translator
Single ply - "I like fixing flats and blaming no one but myself"
Exo - "I like fixing flats but also complaining about it"
DD - "I don't like flats most of the time"
DH casing - "Fuck flats unless I'm riding with locked knees through razor sharp square edged shale"
Maxxis rubber compound translator
60A - "My least favourite things are traction and tyres that last less than 10 years"
Dual compound - "no traction in a straight line, still no traction cornering but wondering why"
3C - "Fuck yeah I can turn. Unless its wet"
Super Tacky - "Ermagherd velcro. But need new tyres daily"
Slow Reezay - "Extinct now but basically fuckballs awesome"
Maxx Speed - "in a straight line till you have to turn or stop"
Maxx Terra - ???
Maxx Grip - ???
So twice now with new tires this year I've been blown away. On the fatty this winter and again today on my + bike. Terrene Wazia 26x4.6 and Chunk 27.5x3. I made moves today that I haven't pulled off with all sorts of other tires and came off the trail all sortsa giddy. These Chunks are kickass, they come in 27.5 x 2.3 and 3.0 and the same in 29 in a light or tough casing.
I just bought a new set of Stans Arch mk3's for my Trance and I figure may as well get new tires as well. I'm thinking minion ss on the rear and a dhf up front. Just can't decide between 2.3 or 2.5. I wanna go 2.5 but it's like 150 grams heavier so it's tough.
I've got two rides on them so far in very rocky places and haven't incurred any damage yet. I have read a few reviews that suggested going with the tough casing for the rear.
??
The company was started by people (that you know) that left a much larger tire and bike company. These are for real.
Tim Kreuger was part of the team that turned Surly into a player, developed their tire line and brought 45North into the world. He brought a few other members of that team along when he started Kreuger Outdoor which includes Advocate Cycles. The tire line is growing quickly and the value/performance balance is definitely there in each model. I think that by this time next year you will hear quite a bit more about them ;)
The Terrenes are made in the WTB factory, and bear a lot of similarities to some of the WTB tires. They have essentially the same casings - the "light," which is a thin single wall, and is fairly tear prone, and the "tough" which is similar to a Maxxis doubledown - 2 ply x 120 tpi.
Also, their tires are super high volume. The Chunk 2.3 measures closer to most other companies' 2.5. So unless you're running a fairly wide rim, you end up with a super round tire profile that doesn't corner that well.
I like that Terrene is looking to bring a good, new knobby tire into the mix, but it needs some revisions to the casing shape, casing construction, and knob size / placement before it's a legitimate contender.
Thanks toast ;) I'm hoping I don't tear one but I won't be surprised if I do. I could definitely feel the difference between these and the Fat B Nimble 3.5's with tubes that I took off. What's a skinny rim
Yeah there's a lot going on with new treads and casings, the '18 line is sounding like it's going to be great.
Does not appear to be the case from the tech specs on the website...
Says the "Light" is 120 tpi and the "Tough" is 60 tpi.

Tell them to make a tubeless ready BBG knockoff in 29x2.1 and 2.35. And not a 2.35 that is almost a plus tire. An actual 2.35. Neither made out of paper nor lead would be nice too.
And wtf kind of value/performance ratio is $70 for a 29x2.3? It's less than a Schwalbe, I guess?
I just measured the two sizes of the Chunk tires. The 3" on WTB Scraper 47s is exactly 3" and the 2.3 on Stans 25s is 2.25. These are to the outermost point of the side knobs not the casing, that brings it down about 1/4" on each.
What if I don't run 12psi on 30mm internal rims with 2.3 tires for xc and trail?
I think your ruler might be broken.

new bike new tires
the 5.5 comes with a tubeless 29" 2.5 Minion DHF EXO on the front and an Aggressor EXO 2.3 on the rear
I definitely feel the loss of some traction when it rains and the trails get wet but otherwise plenty of traction out back and out front I just lean on the 2.5 to unload the agressor a little so it slides around corners a bit ... lotsa fun eh!
These look interesting
