Ok, so this thread needs an update from Black Metal and Death Metal.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned hardly any Stoner/Doom/Progressive bands.
You all need to check out Baroness, Converge, Doom Riders(Nate from Converge), Mastodon, Animals as Leaders, Black Cobra, Earthship, Graveyard, Sleep, High on Fire, Om, Shrinebuilder, Pig Destroyer, Narrows, Orange Goblin, Red Sparowes, Russian Circles, Speedwolf, The Atlas Moth, Torche, The Sword, Toxic Holocaust, Trap Them, Zozobra. Just to name a few.

All of these Bands deserve to get mentioned here.

At least ISIS, Pelican, Red Fang, The Ocean, Bison B.C, Valient Thorr, Black Tusk and Between the Buried and Me has been mentioned. Between's last 2 albums have been EPIC pieces of work.

Baroness is awesome. Picked up Yellow and Green and love it.

Mastodon Rocks, High on Fire Rocks, Orange Goblin (Just saw them open for clutch last week), The Sword (another band I saw open for clutch a couple of years ago) all GREAT bands. Along with Red FAng, The Ocean, Valient Thorr, BTBAM etc...

A friend of mine from MPLS plays guitar, and he is also the head brewer for Surly Brewing Co (any MPLS local people know who this is).

I also seen Orange Goblin open for Clutch a couple weeks ago in Vancouver, first time they had played in Canada, awesome stage presence. Clutch was Amazing as per usual, opened with Earth Rocker to get it started off fresh and fast. Lionize was great too, they are a tight band.

Ripzalot, ASG and Howl are awesome too, I missed them both in my list, so many bands so little memory.

i love orange goblin too - saw them a couple of years ago and they blew me away. they just pound it out heavy and hard! one of the "hardest working bands" around. they just seem to really enjoy what they do. they are playing two shows somewhat locally this summer. i'm tempted to chase down both shows. one being in basically the living room of a converted farmhouse.

relapse has a great catalog of artists. hudge too. so many overlooked. i'm still discovering new ones. one of the better "likes" on facebook to do.

I love seeing bands in small venues, such a better show and atmosphere.

Yeah Relapse has been a great source of good bands.

Tim Lambesis of As I Lay Dying and Austrian Death Machine arrested yesterday (5/7/2013) for allegedly arranging a hit on his estranged or ex-wife. Apparently someone who knew him tipped off the police, they sent a detective undercover to meet over the hit, apparently he solicited it and that's all she wrote.

Being held without bond at the moment...gets arraigned thursday. If convicted in CA, the crime carries a 3-9 year prison sentence.

Bummer, caught AILD a couple months back and they rocked...and I was going to see them again next month in MT. Well so much for that...

Just goes to show if you want something done right it's best to just do it yourself.

I was really bothered to hear about Tim's arrest. He supposed to be one of the good guys. You did please not guilty for what it's worth

This is my desert island list. Some classics, and maybe a few that flew under your radar to check out. Enjoy.

Noisy Hardcore/Metalcore

1. Converge-Jane Doe. Seriously this is one of the greatest metal records of all time. Cathartica
2. Botch-Anthology of Dead Ends/We are the Romans.Untouchable
3. Daughters-Daughters. A wall of incredible insane noise. Super underappreciated for what it is. The David Byrne esque vocals are hilarious and somehow totally perfect.
4. Envy-A Dead Sinking Story/Insomniac Doze. Gazer neo-classical Japanese hardcore.


Death Metal
1. Lykathea Aflame-Elvinfris. Probably one of the most under appreciated metal albums of all time. Its a masterpiece plain and simple. Brutal, Melodic,Genuine, Virtuosic.
2. Ulcerate-Destroyers of All. Title says it all. The soundscape of a post nuclear scorched earth.
3. Atheist-Unquestionable Presence. The original Jazz Death.
4. Cryptopsy-None So Vile. Still true.



Blackended Metal/Thrash
1. Deathspell Omega-Chaining the Katechon. I really like Si Monumentum as well, but I find it drags a little as album. Chaining is a perfect blast of dissonant progressive black metal
2. Watain-Sworn to the Dark. Most definitely
3. Weapon-From the Devil's Tomb. If Cliff Burton were to write a black metal album
4. Sepultura-Arise. The soundscape of a post viral chemical warfare apocolypse

D-Beat, Prog Punk, and Complicated-core
1. Disfear-Live the Storm/Misanthropic Generation. Go break something
2. Refused-The Shape of Punk to Come. Another genre bending game changer.
3. Car Bomb-w^w^^w^w. Count it, or die trying
4. Cleric-Regressions. Cinematic, vast vision.

I'm mostly into more stoner and less death metal but all the above are killer.

I know we're all busy discussing how core and cvlt and trve we are, but nine pages and no mention of Motorhead? Ace of Spades was my first album.

Are Russian Circles considered metal? They definetly have some menacing/intense moments, especially on their last album. Anyway - they're in the studio right now recording their next album.

Have you heard "Russian Circles Live at Schubas"? It's my favorite Russian Circles recording, should hold you over till the next album comes out.

post-metal like pelican, isis, explosions in the sky. i like their sound but it gets boring quick. i think they would be great to see live in concert. i just missed them a few months back.
