Yo! Who was @ ABasin on Monday in the red Taco with a campertop and Pennsylvania plates?
You had a couple of pair fatypus and a pair of 191 Fats on the back.
First pair I have seen other than mine, wish I would've seen you.
Nice rig.

I've put ~25 days on the hybrids, 5 on the pures; with a few days switching back and forth and skiing similiar lines.
Short story:
The hybrids are damper, are better in crud, like to charge.
The pures are more energetic, are more fun in untracked, and are easier to bend into smaller turn shapes.
On a number of days I would ski the pure early until the POW was cutup and then switch over to the damper hybrid to clean up the plate.
I like the lighter, popier, pure when skiing either untracked, homogeneous snow (not just POW); and when skiing steep, tight couliors or trees as the ski was friendlier and easier to bend (also falling-leaf manuveurs were easier, not that I ever falling-leaf, but ...).
+ it is much lighter on the shoulder and noticeably faster edge to edge.
The hybrid is also super fun in POW, but wants to crush it instead of playing in it.
The dampness of the ski makes it smooth over cruddy, chopped-up snow.
The stiffness also helps in this regard, making straight-line exits through crud much easier (the lighter carbon is not as confidence inspiring on hot exits).
The hybrid is also more fun on groomers, easier to drive the tip and a higher (no?) speed limit ( I actually got a speed warning when skiing the hybrids :o).
In the end I'm pretty sure I will mount the hybrids dedicated alpine and the pures dedicated tech (with inserts)
I think that the softer/lighter ski will pair well with my touring boot (Maestrale RS).
But since the pure already has solly holes in it for my BSL I might put inserts in them, as well inserts for plums (to share the binders with my 202 138s)
Stoked you're so pumped about them, pfuff!
After neglecting my edges for a couple years, I finally had to put some work into them for the early season wrods.
^^^ yeah, the ol' 1* 2* made 'em even better.
Hey guys, quick Q. Just finished tuning the side a base edge on my 186 Lhasa Fats. I'm planning on lightly detuning tips and tails- but seeing as the sis are flat underfoot is a little bit harder to tell where to detune and where the "contact points are." Any recommendations on where to start to start tips and tails (actual distance would be nice)
I know there's a few other threads about this, but not specifically for this rocker profile. And I also know there's those who don't detune at all- I always have, just a little at least.
An actual number? Dude, just take a gummi to the hill, take a few laps, and detune till you like how they feel. Not rocket science.
Ok not an actual number then? But in general where should I be focusing on? Front had enough rise that I can tell there, but rear is harder
Rear edge on a 186 Fat in reverse camber won't need to be detuned.
put them base to base and note where they make contact in the tips.
mark that edge area (from the front point of contact to the tip itself) with a sharpie on the base of the edge.
detune that area (starting lightly).
i never detuned either pair of 191Fats, but different strokes.
First full day on the FATS yesterday at silver with 20+" of new and heavy winds. What a fun fucking ski. Slays the pow with very little effort, enabling a relaxed stance. Drift the tails, check, throw sideways to check speed, you bet. Sink the tails in soft soft in the trees to keep things in order, ok. Rail the fuck outa the groomers, he'll yeah. Stomp the little 5'ers I hit, duh. Make it through the nasty icy blown off areas, yeah but may need a few fillings replaced, maybe I should have just slowed down, say what?. Just crush the wind packed funky snow and put and huge smile on my face in process, check fucking mate!
These skis were so much fun yesterday. I don't have my ski legs yet so had to keep speeds just under looney. The only issue I had was when going slow in deep pow due to uber tight trees. The skis didn't really want to pivot. Not a big issue since that is just a couple areas getting to the more open goods. Once you get a little speed up they come to life. Cannot comment on maching the chop as there was none, either fresh or wind packed pow was snow of the day. They handled the bumps fine since I have a big turn air off shit another big turn style, not a zipper liner.
Flex seamed fine, snow was really dry and light, once I get my legs stronger and I can Mach the chop, we will see. They did hand flex softer than I expected, still pretty stiff under foot. Great ski, the shape is money! Lots of questions on the lift. ThAts all that really matters, right? Is that people notice my cool bro indie skis? " channeling my inner Hugh.
^^^ I was just about to bump this thread to see if you had any time on them yet.
Nice to see they delivered.
I've put five more days on my pair in widely varying conditions.
Groomers, pow, cutup pow, crud, wind blown, bumps.
This ski is brilliant (and I'm not too shaby either).
In all seriousness, do yourself a favor and ski one.
:D
PS where's the AK dude (icb12) that I sold those pures too?
Thoughts?
Very late posting my review of these skis. Life is... complicated. Splat very graciously brought my fats out to SIA in CO in 2012. Great to meet the wizard who drives PMG! Skis looked beautiful and he worked with the Wintersteiger guys to them them ground and waxed. Got them mounted up and they sat. And they sat. And they sat some more with just a few mediocre days on them. Finally had the chance to try them recently in an environment where they would excel. The hill was at was at least knee-deep in creamy CO pow. After a few tentative turns to see how they would work, I knew there were good. The day was wonderful and the skis delivered. They glided through the deep like a buttery knife through a tenderloin. So fun! They planed up and would turn where I wanted when I wanted. The ski is big when it needs to be, but is nimble when it should be. Simply a sweet ski. I worried a bit that they might be too wide at 117 but I found them to be agile and quick. Surprised the hell of me on that. The great thing about these skis is that you don't have to ski crazy good to run these things. So happy I have them! Will definitely get them out more often! Anyone can have a great day on these skis since I did!
Finally got on these on some legit snow at Magic yday. 4 inches on the groomers, some deeper cutup pow and much bottomless in the trees. Had a day at Hickory last year in super mank where i felt uncomfortable but yday was truly fkna. super fun in the cowboy pow, handled bumps just fine when i needed them to and very intuitive in the deep without being hooky. i was eating up chop with abandon. i'm still getting used to speed control in the trees with rocker so I gave myself a couple scares. im used to more traditional mount point and like to feel a big shovel out there, think i'm mounted at +2 or +3 and may prefer only +1. will see if i have the material left to remount.
^ +3! Man you're way forward. How tall/heavy? I'm on the line and would not think of going more forward. 5'10/200. I could see a lighter guy going +1 but that's it.
I went -1.5.
comparing the line to other skis I had mounted (Kastle MX98, Goliath and Lotus120) the line looked too far forward.
IIRC the line has migrated forward over the years.
mine @ -1.5 is closer to the original mount point.
although i can't recall what that is (it's in this thread as i sought the wisdom of the collective when I was mounting).
I would have to measure mine to see what the mount point is actually at.
PS I'm 140#;5'10"
PPS Feed me bacon!
EDIT: after searching this thread the current mark is 104.5 from the tip.
it was originally further back than that (1 or 2?; couldn't tell for sure).
My mount is @ -1.5, so 106 from the tip
Seems like money to me.
I'm at 104.5 cm from from tip measured in a straight line, or about 105.5cm from tip measured along the ski bend. I'm 6'4 195#. Thinking about going 2cm further back
Well due to Swiss cheese, I'm now a touch further than 107, straight pull. Looks okay on my foot, hopefully feels good tomorrow. I like more traditional mount anyways
^^^ nice.
Might me that my baby was crying all night or just cuz I suck but that mount was not the place. I shoulda listened from the get go. I borrowed some old holes and am at 106 now. Will report back tomorrow
Yeah 106 seems to be the magic number. Thanks for the help all. Just two runs today but was crushing through the trees with confidence. More fun tomorrow
^^^ excellent!
