verbier:
still some good snow (with good pow spots such as the stairway to heaven) on north faces >2500m
very enjoyable corn to track on south faces >2500m after 3:30 PM (eg creblet, col de mines, scattered spots between mt gelè and la chaux). But don't even try it before that time.
Just got back from a ski tour today from the Midi and found really good conditions! The col du plan or envers du plan or whatever is pretty tracked out but the snow is good and soft, very similar to most times I've skiied it throughout the winter. Coverage is good in the exit couloirs too.
Then we ski toured up and up and found some good stuff up there, varying from 'a little crusty but great' to 'light pow'... in addition to the stock views and ambiance that another sunny day provided us.
TR coming soon as I get these pics together and maybe a coffee...
Thanks for the pick me up--- Ya I know I was bitching, but i was having one of those moments, and happened to be on the forum and took it out on here.
When I woke up this morning I remembered last February in Tahoe, and all the hot weather we had...in my Avi I class we were up above Donner summit, and most all of the ridges were bare dirt, and snow was scarce, but then march came and it Nuked....
Carpe Diem, and let it snow?
so. the cold will come.
but will the snow?
first germany and england will be crushed bey hurricane force winds on thursday and then the cold NW flow will start on sat/sun.
the question is: how moist will it be?
(btw. the downside of this. krasnia polyana/ Caucasus will get warm because of our colder weather. and if we don't get lots of snow my last option of flying there is screwed AND i still can't ski the alps...)
By mid of next week things are supposed to shape up snowwise. The cool northwesterly breath will mostly let the northern Alps benefit (hooray!) but also higher spots in the west will get their share.
24cm of new snow predicted for Alpe d'Huez on Monday.
Could be the usual Snow Forecast baloney. I dunno.
you have every right to bitch about lack of snow on a ski forum. hiking and visiting museums are weak options for january. there is still good skiing on the glacier. get a season pass and start going. i'm already on day 12 for the season. just need 16 to break even. and if you are a student, it is considerably less, i do believe.
it's going to change in the next week or so...for the better. that's an easy prediction coz it certainly can't get worse. the last week in jan has been the start of pretty good around here for the last several seasons.
Well fåck, atleast you guys have glaciers and some snow... It's looking like late May outside my window right now. And I live at about the same latitude as freaking Alaska :cussing:.
Oh well, atleast bouldering is pretty good at the moment. Too bad, I have fåcked up tendons on me freakin' hand (so no climbing or very little for me).
Hey,ya I got the Alp VD season pass that is good for the entire valley and Glacier. I headed over there like 5 or so days ago but wind had the Tram closed. I still want to meet up with you guys over there on a powder day soon. La Combe looks amazing. Even if they get some up top over the next couple of days I want to shoot over there.
I have good feelings about this last week in January- keep good vibes!
Looks like snow will be hitting Austria from Monday next week. www.wetter.at is predicting snowfall in the western parts of tirol from Monday through to Thursday next week. Lets hope it stays that way...
cool. i'll probably be there this weekend again, weather permitting. buzz me on friday evening and i might be able to give you a ride over.
btw, check their website after 8am (they usually update it between 8 and 8.15) to see if the tram is open. you can pretty much assume that if it's windy (60+ or so) or cloudy up high with r/snow then it will be closed.
Anyone place much faith in the j2ski.com 7 day forecasts?
They seem to agree with snow-forecast for wet and warm on the weekend, then continuing snow next week.
It's snowing at the moment (Well, 'Wintery Mix') in Durham, which is nice. Also Scotland's meant to be a getting a bit - seeing if I can get a lift up the the Gorms or Nevis this weekend for some climbing :D

That would be nice!Quote:

Looks like the Dolomites will get a dump next Tues/Wed. Now BC is grim & pistes are falling apart.
I like the forecast for Kaunertal (from j2ski.com):
4cm 13cm 18cm 1cm 7cm 2cm 20cm 7cm
That is for the top lift, I suppose in reality we are going to see rain on Friday and Sat.
I thought I should share my misery with the rest of the snow-starved euros here..

Bulgaria - the country with the most pathetic snow cover in mid January( pic taken at 2000 meters, peaks in the distance are ~2500m).. we were supposed to skin up and up and up and ski down, during an avalanche safety course.. well that's as far as we went.. oh and all time highest temperature for mid january was reached 2 days ago - 21 C !!!! The forecast shows a change in the weather patterns for next week, hopefully it will finally start snowing and temperatures will drop a bit..
Oh yee of little faith. As Bbirtle and Powders have shown there is still good snow available. Today it even fell out of the sky....ok all of 3cm's of it. But time waits for no man (or is that snowman).

Keep the updates coming boys. My fingers are crossed. I'd be happy to take credit for bringing a 6 foot dump with me next week. We'll have to hook up. I hear there may even be a Roo sighting if the stars(flakes?) align.
By the time you are here it's prolly melt down again.;)
Just got a text, snow falling in Zermatt.
