The 2015 lifting of the ban on oil exports from
US will result in the majority of crude coming down the pipeline getting exported. I recall this as one of the reasons why the State Dept concluded keystone would not enhance our petrochemical national security.

Energy security is an interesting topic obviously in the Ukraine/Russia context. Everyone is still digesting the implications of the surprising support in Germany for their new direction. On a related note, there’s a lot of handwringing regarding Russian capture of nuclear power plants. We’d feel pretty calm about Russian capture of solar or wind farms ;)

More people would be open to new pipelines if environment/safety/planning/etc were more than an inconvenience to the companies building and operating the things.

The one thing I never understood about KXL was the argument that it was bad for the environment, as opposed to the same oil being transported by things that move and derail and turn over and sink.

Anyway, back to Ukraine and my new boat shopping timewaster.

It wasn’t the pipeline itself that was being billed as bad for the environment. It’s the oil sands and what they have to do to remove the oil from the Sands that was a major concern, I believe.

Pipelines also leak and there seems to be minimal accountability.

Realistically only because they could turn them off or make them unusable to screw over Ukraine.

Accountability can be assigned.
Oil flows with or without a pipeline, except trucks/trains crash/leak far more than pipelines.
Pipelines are the lesser ecologic and economic evil.
None of those realities were being considered when arguing on the merits in the media. Once you understand that, the question is what are the real objections?

1. The right people weren't getting paid off enough (and this includes legitimate monetary concerns such as accountability and compensation of the stakeholders whose lands would be impacted). This was addressable...

2. The true driving thought between big money and political opposition was that the green minded elite believe that literally anything that makes oil/gas more economical is wrong and must be opposed even if the solution being opposed is less bad for the environment than the alternative because in their minds the only way to 100% renewables is to make oil/gas as expensive as possible as soon as possible. It is a shortsighted outlook in the name of being longminded and has unintended consequences such as we are experiencing right now.

Oil production and oil transportation are two different things.


Pipelines are 4 times safer than transportation by rail. Lots and lots of oil and gas are transported from AB east & west by rail. Remember the CN blockade not long ago and Quebec was running out of propane? And remember during the NDP slap down between Notley and Horgan over TMX? Her NDP solution was to buy a fuck ton of oil tanker rail cars to increase the amount of oil on our rail system.. So what now, liv2ski? f**** those trains??


As for production, the oil sands ain’t pretty, however it is ‘the’ production region that is under an intense spotlight. And that’s a good thing and it’s driving cleaner production and carbon carbon capture. I wish that same spotlight was on orphan wells, but that’s another episode. Unfortunately this same spotlight is NOT on other oil producing regions like Nigeria, Venezuela etc.., that feeds our immense Western demand. School me on how clean and ethical those production regions are. Please.

There are currently 9k+ federal approved oil leases available. Oil company’s stopped investing in new production in favor of buybacks and dividends. KXL would not have fixed this situation because it’s how oil is distributed to regional refineries.

I know you are (possibly) new here, but please, DON’T Post in black, most of us read this on a blue background, and it is unreadable.

Enforceable accountability is the issue. The country is littered with superfund sites where accountability was assigned and difficult or impossible to enforce.

Pipelines as a lesser ecologic evil is clearly up for debate. How much oil is spilled and how often? Is total oil spilled or oil spilled per distance traveled more important? Where is the oil spilled and what is the impact to people and the environment? How difficult are cleanups? Does new technology make other transport methods better?

Green-minded elite. Add that one to list of other elite bogeymen like coastal elite, urban elite, educated elite, liberal elite, etc, etc. Reasonable people are willing to make reasonable concessions. Reasonable companies are willing to make reasonable concessions. If that means safer, more robust pipelines wind up looking like silly straws that require more maintenance that cost more then that's what it is.

Missed that. After searching around, I’d say it looks like they might have hit some vehicles in spots, but far from the “road of death” level of destruction seen in Kuwait. The problem is, even if they were able to take out a few vehicles, or even a mile of the convoy, there’s still another 39 miles of it left.
