Oil flows with or without a pipeline, except trucks/trains crash/leak far more than pipelines.
Pipelines are the lesser ecologic and economic evil.
None of those realities were being considered when arguing on the merits in the media. Once you understand that, the question is what are the real objections?
1. The right people weren't getting paid off enough (and this includes legitimate monetary concerns such as accountability and compensation of the stakeholders whose lands would be impacted). This was addressable...
2. The true driving thought between big money and political opposition was that the green minded elite believe that literally anything that makes oil/gas more economical is wrong and must be opposed even if the solution being opposed is less bad for the environment than the alternative because in their minds the only way to 100% renewables is to make oil/gas as expensive as possible as soon as possible. It is a shortsighted outlook in the name of being longminded and has unintended consequences such as we are experiencing right now.
