Snow for the Euros.

Drove up to Flaine today, no snow on the way up, some pathetic looking slush in the main bowl....tried to keep a straight face dropping people off. Roumour arround the airport (GVA) was parts of the Portes du Soleil are shutting due to lack of snow.

Thought I'd giev the Grand Montets ago anyway for a few late afternoon runs....Nice wind deposited pow, sections of smooth calk, nice all the way back to mid station.

And the view ast the sun tried to make an apperance wasn't bad either.

The home run ws slushy buty not water logged, so you can still get 2000m (6600ft) of nice skiing in!

i wasn't skiing today. i haven't skied since last june :(

I don't know about global warming but something really strange is goin on.

Here in South Finland there was a news about mushrooms growing up in the forest, some spring flowers blooming, and first summer birds coming back to north, fish starting to spawn etc....in the early January. There was a week(!) of about +8~9 C temperatures and even couple of sunny days! (for the record the average temp here in January should be about -10C...and it's pretty normal to have temperatures from -20 to even -30). The whole december was about 8 degrees(!) warmer than average!

Up north they're reporting on exceptional snow depth in some places though. The Lappland/Northern Norway is going to be a winner if this kind of weather pattern will be permanent. Even if the slopes are nothing special here in Finland, you always have lots of snow and real winter,good groomers and park, some small off piste and then you can head to the Lyngen etc. in the springtime for great touring.

A really good move would be moving way up north (like Tromsø etc.) and enjoy the wilderness, peace and touring possibilities there.(as a guy with a job and family and the normal rat race here it's not that easy though...but I've been thinking this alot, every day, in this miserable "winter". Damn we skied like three days of park in November, then nine weeks break due to lack of snow...and it looks like next week is going to be again ~+5C and some rain..FUCK)

Sorry about the rant but this really sucks.

Just watching the snow melt each day you ski, and see the snow line creep up every day is very degrading. I feel like the season is ending, and almost trick my mind into thinking it is April and spring skiing is in full swing.

Just got back from 3 Vallées, had a few cms of fresh on Sunday night, but then it just iced up and all got scraped back to the rock higher up, and slush lower down. Not good :(

Quite a good day and actually a great day given the conditions in Obertauern today.

I was gaping at groomers with artificial snow yesterday (yes, I'm really desperate). There were quite a couple of bikers at the tracks beside the piste. I guess they laughed at us silly skiers :rolleyes:

Weather is unfortunately seasonably warm. Plans early in the week to go skiing yesterday (saturday) instead I went climbing...in a t-shirt...and was still too warm. Hopefully the storm at the end of the week will bring a good amount of snow.

Anyway don't call off the season just yet. It's worse than the last three years I've been here but we still have half of Jan and all of Feb+Mar+Apr and you can bet there will be a lot of powder days coming.

Skied Vallee Blanche today, pretty much same as bbirtle's report. There is a thin band between ~2800 and ~3100 of good snow though, an inch or two (!!!) of soft snow on top of a firm base so quite fun to ski. Above that, its wind affected hard pack, below is crusty/icy crap with some variable spring crap at the bottom.

There is a front coming in on Thursday... and then sunday onwards we are supposed to finally get some cold weather, with hopefully considerable snow in the northern Alps..... Its just that the long term forecasts have looked promising quite a few times this winter, and then it all fucks up

I am with you....I was out with Ripzalot and TeleAl yesterday at G3 and had a blast on the chalk. I am still waiting for the snow, but making the best of what is out there.

the snow between the top of Mont Fort and the base of the tram in Verbier was better than bad. Pretty grim coverage all around but I could see how that place would go off in good snow.

sunshine & variable windpack all weekend, good times.

usually there is one point on this ridge where you come up from one side and drop down on the other, going along the ridgeline never looked like a good idea last season because a cornice often builds up along it. so today we got to go somewhere we hadn't been and do some scrambling on loose rocks to ski a bit of interesting breakablecrustwindpackwhoopsarockpow.
