Ingebrigtsen got his just deserts. Blocked Hocker on the inside, then Kerr on the outside, wound up in 4th. Boo hoo.
Meh, the block was fine. Just desserts was letting the inside open up again, and overcooking it trying set a WR instead of just bringing home the gold and having nothing left for the kick.
Also, I'll say it again, Gabby Thomas, wow.
Nuguse has known to be a strong kicker since college. 5-10m and he would’ve overtaken Kerr who started to lose momentum in the last 20-30m as Nuguse came up.
Nuguse kicked and closed the same as Hocker in the final 200m, but he was a step ahead at the bell and couldn’t stay up on Hocker when he moved at 300m out. Hocker closing in 39.6 at that pace is in insane.

This is what it’s all about: https://x.com/NBCSports/status/1821005012018815274
Jakob went out too hard and admitted that post race. 56 would have been a hard opener but 54 was too much:
“No human has ever run faster than 3:29 while leading wire-to-wire without a pacer. Ingebrigtsen was trying to run 2-3 seconds faster than that in Paris.”
He was gracious in defeat, which is a nice change and I’m confident he’ll get some hardware and likely a gold in the 5000m
I love how in the longer track events the lead can change so dramatically at the end. You just don't see that in swimming where the speeds are so much slower.
So who's the bigger dick between Kerr and Ingebrigtsen? They both sort of seemed like assholes in the NBC piece, though I think I'd give the nod to Ingebrigtsen.
I honestly wonder if Ingebrigtsen opened up the inside again because he realized that was the only hope to keep Kerr from winning.
The commentary I've been seeing is that Inge moved outside to block Kerr, not realizing/thinking that Hocker was a threat on the inside. Also, pretty interesting to see the commentary around how the lack of a pacer or pacing lights impacted the race
Does anyone else think BMX racing is dumb and pointless? It would be so much more fun to watch as a time trial format with one rider starting every 30 seconds.
Hocker probably takes another two tenths of a second off the OR if he there had been a clear lane coming into the straightaway. My guess is that then forces Kerr to go about 20 meters earlier and then Nuguse catches him at the end and gets him with the lean by about .005 or thereabouts. In any event that was a great tactical run by Hocker. If you look at the replay, he made a great decision about 35 seconds or so into the race when he started to drift back and lose contact with the front group and made a strong acceleration to close the gap. If he hadn't done that I don't think he's getting the gold and fighting for the bronze.
US Mens water polo advances to medal rounds after a thrilling shoot-out win (admittedly, I only watched the final quarter and shootour)
Man I love watching weightlifting. These little 134lb dudes picking a 300lb weight off the floor straight up to over their heads, and then basically deep squatting the whole thing up to standing while holding the bar overhead the whole time... Its incredible.
Everyone talked about the men's 1500 yesterday, but how about Gabby Thomas in the 200?! She's something else with the looks, the smarts, and the unbelievable athletic ability.
That was just your average drop dead gorgeous athlete with an Ivy League graduate degree crushing her competition on a global stage. Nowhere near as exciting as a come from behind win from a 20 to 1 dark horse.
Seriously though, if the 1500 had gone off as expected, Thomas would have gotten all the coverage that went to Hocker instead.
Jakob is certainly seen as the bigger boast and prick between the two (though he has the times, wins and hardware to speak from the top). He’s curt and Nordic but doesn’t really hold back his POV and chooses to be less-than mature/diplomatic at times. Kerr runs his mouth a bit more and assumes the tone of the underdog. But now Jakob has lost three of the last 1500m global championships in a row, despite maintaining top-level fitness and times. He admitted that he was beaten by better men yesterday and admitted that he needed the race to be 100m shorter. He ran well through the curve but didn’t have a final gear for the home stretch. Kerr, Hocker and Nuguse are better finishers and still managed amazing final 200m, despite the pace.
Kerr would probably get less hype and negativity if he got rid of the sunglasses in every race (he races with them indoors). Jakob’s family situation has spiraled in the last few years after he parted ways with his dad as coach, talked shit about him and turned his back on the family that brought him from a 17y/o phenomenon to gold medalist. The Norwegian reality about their family has put him in the spotlight much more than any other runner and I think that has contributed to his “prickish” vibe.
Thomas is the total package, no doubt. She has a beautiful, floating stride when she’s up to speed, much like Bol at full flight. I’d love to see a 300m race between Thomas, Bol and Sydney.
But her win wasn’t a big surprise. She’s been dominant and consistent as the best 200m runner in the US. With ShaCarri and the Jamaicans out of the 200, it had much less drama. It was Thomas’ to lose and Alfred’s to possibly surprise-win.
Gabby should be in the 4x100, and I'm hoping Sydney goes in the 4x400.
The bell ringing gives the best vibes
You'd almost think humans evolved on land and not in the sea,
When you know you're fading and you're only hope is to try to keep people on both sides of you from passing, well . . .
They won despite some pro Aussie refereeing. Their fasted swimmer ejected plus penalty shot plus 4 minute power play for punching Aussie player in the face after having his held underwater for over 30 seconds with no call. And a couple of missed ejections. US gave up trying to feed their center because he was getting mugged with no calls.
What a finish in the mens 400!! WOW
That was almost as exciting as the 1500 finish!!
edit: whoops no spoilers for those who will watch it tonight

Fastest Olympic sport? Have we forgotten the friggin' downhill?
Umm, Olympic lugers can get up to 90mph and bobsledders up to 95 or 96
Yeah, I think we can safety say gravity is providing the speed in those events. I'm talking about sports that are human-propelled.
This Olympics has been an absolute lifesaver for me. My in-laws decided to come visit in August in southern NV for reasons. My father has advanced Parkinson's, so we're already limited in activities as it is, but in the heat it's even worse. He's basically been watching the Olympics all day and it's kept him reasonably entertained. I've watched more than I have in years. I hear a lot of complaints about Peacock's streaming, but it's been amazing for me to be able to just pull it up and cast it to the big screen. Part of the reason I wasn't as into it in years past is that we don't have regular TV, so I'd only see highlights, streams, or when I was out. This year I've seen a ton. I love the feeling of being really invested in a sport in which 30 minutes before you didn't know the rules or competitors.
