Oh JD....
Was fishing in a tshirt until dark yesterday on the ocean. Only got a shad from the jetty but watched guys dragging bait hook up with 2 decent sized schoolies right in front of me. Bait is so, lame.
Today is mid 40s with a 25-35mph wind. More like it. Hopefully will catch something decent for my troubles.
Mid 40's? Ouch, that's tough, you must have had to put a long sleeve shirt on? :)
The outside thermometer in the truck read 12 degrees when we pulled up to the launch ramp yesterday.

The family and myself made our annual thanksgiving trek to Western North Carolina, on the southern border of GSMNP. I try and take some time each year to sneak away for some therapy, fishing one of the innumerable options in the area.
Unfortunately the area hasn't had any rain to speak of in months, so water is low, and wildfires abundant.
I decided to take a few hours to fish Deep Creek on Thursday. Fishing in the steps of legendary Appalachian outdoors men like Mark Cathey and Horace Kephart.
The parking lot at the trailhead was full of tourist family's taking their Thanksgiving walks on an easy, but very scenic trail.
Attachment 193553
On limited time, I wasn't going to be able to hike in too far, but knew I'd be able to get away from the humans fairly easily as the trail eventually rises pretty high above the creek.
Attachment 193554
Forgot my tube, so this wasn't a problem. A few summers ago I witnessed an Indian family dressed in full street clothes walking up the trail with tubes. Unfortunately I wasn't able to document it with pics.
I got in the water at the first bridge past Indian Creek.
Target acquired. Attachment 193556 Tied on a tan caddis with a hares ear as a dropper. Saw a fish rise to eat something just off the right bank. First cast to that vicinity and this fella took the dry. Attachment 193557
BWOs started coming off, but I never once went to my pack to change my rig. Even after beating the shit out of my caddis with my hemostats on the first fish, fish were still rising to the fly.
Slowly moved up the Creek and took a small rainbow..Attachment 193558 Attachment 193560
Missed a few more, had one to hand that "prereleased". At this point, it was time to get back to the fam. Was pretty much walled out from the trail, but didn't feel like sloshing back where I'd come from so decided to bushwhack and claw myself up the steep bank thru the rhodo.
Attachment 193559
The point of egress.
Attachment 193561
Can't wait to get back in there when I have a full day to explore...but for a few hours, it was good therapy.
Had a great time in the surf over the holiday weekend. I think I put in over 30 hours from Fri-Sun. It was tough going back to work today.
Woke up Friday morning to birds working north on peanuts. Fished well away from the hordes and was rewarded with a couple shorts that I was able to reach otf
https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5823/3...a0f499ab_b.jpgIMG_1864 by AD, on Flickr
Things quieted down later in the morning, broke for lunch and when I returned the bait was still around in abundance but had moved south. Even with no fish harassing the bunker the pods were moving faster down the beach than you could walk. The best you could do was to get out in front of it and have at your 10 casts of glory as it moved by. Being the holiday weekend, the buggy bandits were out in force, all on snag & drop
https://c2.staticflickr.com/6/5343/3...3b5eea02_b.jpgIMG_0666 by AD, on Flickr
There were smaller pods of bait that were overlooked by those only waiting for the latest text updates and watching for bent rods… Had a good blowup right at dusk with no one around, another short
https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5745/3...0e8ce475_b.jpgIMG_1867 by AD, on Flickr
The next morning was slower, didn't bother fishing in the mob but it eventually caught up to me. I managed another schoolie right in the midst of the pack otf. I'm normally happy about sharing the wealth, but seeing the dumfounded expressions on 30 faces when the only one to hook up was this freak doing some tenkara shit was awesome. I thought the fly cast would spare me more room, but I was wrong. Almost hooked a couple guys that were stoopid enough to stand right next to me. "I thought you were a righty" some guy said as he almost took my clouser to the face. fuckin rubes
https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5349/3...f3864f44_b.jpgIMG_0667 by AD, on Flickr
Battery died unexpectedly after lunch, luckily at the house and not a couple miles down the beach. But most of the afternoon was lost.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5610/3...20c63dd3_b.jpgIMG_0669 by AD, on Flickr
Sunday was a bust. Bait more sparse than the past two days and was unable to seduce any rogue bass, but it was another gorgeous day

I had another great season in YNP this year! Here's a few from fishing in and around the park.
I'm still in search of big brook trout, but we have a few pockets with reliable 13-15" ones.

A couple from work:
Attachment 193808
Not quite the biggest cuttie I've caught in the area, but certainly one of the purdiest.
Attachment 193809
Attachment 193810
A nice lil' 26" brown on a rainy day. I had the entire spawn off, and it was glorious.
Attachment 193811
Nice pics! Did you guys bring up a lot of macks this season?
About 344,000, which is the most we've ever caught in a season. Not sure when the population will crash, but it sure seems like it has to, with that kind of pressure.
Thanks for being out there and doing what you do! As much as I dig fishing for those things in the spring and fall, I would like them them out! Especially in Jellystone Lake.
I love that Roos lives across the street from me, I know which house is his, he fishes all the same spots I do, and we've never met (I saw him once at a party but I'm to anti-social to say that I know you from the internet). Plus, he's got mad photo shop skills copying all these giant Montana fish into the pictures.
Haha
Don't be a stranger, man. Come over and drink some shitty beer with me. Come ski with us on Thursdays. We can fish next season.
I meet and fish with random dudes from the internet all the time. Don't sweat it. Right now, I'm in a house in south Louisiana with 10 guys I met from forums. Besides all the butt sex, it's not weird.
No big ones for me this trip. Conditions were shit. We didn't even fish yesterday. Great times though.

Sweet fish Aenigma! Really dig that Cuttie, incredible.
That's why I was laughing when I wrote it. I live across the big street, Hwy 40, in Pole Creek Valley. I think you park your raft on the side of your house which faces what ever the Meadow Creek Road is called. I'm (much) of an internet stalker however I read your posts because they are some of the best humor around here and I love the pictures.
I think we were at a mutual friends house on the 4th maybe. I get pretty bad anxiety and I really wasn't feeling good that day and just wanted to go home. After the fact, I saw a picture here of your wife and kid and connected the dots.
I really should come skiing with you guys. I looked for your a couple times last year on Thursday but didn't see you. I'm a fairly standard Fraser Valley Contractor Type I just am pretty guarded in social situations. That said, it's good for me to get out and about and I get along well with almost everyone.
This is my favorite thread every year. Thanks guys.
Xmas break fishes, and probably the last fish of the year.
I think I caught one of the same fish I caught last time out...

Yep. That's me. Right across from the house where Brad W is doing the addition, which is taking fucking forever. Let me know if you ever want to borrow the boat.
Best humor/bitter asshole. Same, same.Quote:

My wife is friends with Monica, that was the first time I met Ryan. I bet you were hanging with all the dudes around the bar while I was kid wrangling. Adam H is a good friend of mine, or rather, our wives are besties.Quote:

Yes. You should. Every Thursday. We usually meet in the lot around 9 and ski till around noon. Then party time. If the weather is shitty we go to Pep's instead. Look for us doing something like this, usually with more people:Quote:
I really should come skiing with you guys.

Posting this publicly because that's a public invite for skiing at Winter Park, and the same goes for fishing.
^^^^^^ What he said. I enjoy seeing the pics. Definitely on the short list of great threads. Right up there with snow for the euros, skin track stoke, the wasatch thread to name a few.....
