Anyone headed up this weekend? I'll be on the Hotoon route from BC.
Pics from Lassen 6-14 and Shasta 6-21.
Shasta is smoove corn above 11k. Below 11k, giant suncups, garbage skiing. Camp at 10k and go for the goods, still exceptional from the summit down H/W. Did the Hotlam direct route to summit (lookers right). The chute narrows to 45d plus at the top.

4,000' corn run...
Anything from this last low pressure that was bringing more to our north?
Check the Lassen NP Facebook page.
Nice! Looks enticingAttachment 169720
Any reports from Shasta this season?
With these wee little cold storms in Tahoe, the big beacon of the north doesn't pull so strong.
But telemetry shows 21 inches of snow on the ground at Sand Flat (near Bunny Flat). http://www.skimountaineer.com/MtnWeb...telemetry=true
I think last night's storm gave shasta a good, cold, deep pounding
Dad just texted me from bunny flat, apparently a big rockfall came down from the red banks all the way past lake helen in the last storm.
No idea on current conditions, but the 7-day QPF is showing >10 inches of SWE for the area. Gonna be bonkers if it's cold enough.
Shasta Climbing Rangers posted this one on Facebook yesterday:

Pretty sobering thinking about your overhead exposure when climbing that route ... also pretty exciting looking at West Face covered fairly well and the Trinities starting to fill in ...
DAMN!!! that is impressive. It went past Helen and the main bivy/camp spot.
Also, last spring there was a boulder release/rock fall off Casaval Ridge. Avi Gulch is bad enough with the ice/rock coming down Red Banks each season.
I'm sure some of this 11.2" is going to hit Shlassen ...

Does anyone have recent beta on Lassen or shasta? Was thinking if this high pressure holds maybe check out LNP or even shasta if conditions warrant. Thoughts?
My thoughts are that the ski season will be very long if we get mostly freezing nights this spring and summer:
http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryF?LLP
Sensor is showing 63" of water content and 20' of snow on the ground ...
Ask me on Monday, I predict wind and ice :D
Shasta is in good shape, I had some really good turns. Its going to be a good spring season me thinks
Lassen/shasta is probably getting crapped on with this AR event going on right now.
As long as we have freezing nights in May and June, it's gonna be a good long spring at shlassen!
atmospheric river is right, but not in a good way until Sunday. Rained through Saturday but Sunday paid off at the smaller volcano with 6-10 inches of fresh and very stable. got 1 steep and exposed line before the cloud deck dropped again and started snowing, then two more great runs. No wallowing and fast turns.

Oh my goodness, I hope this is somewhat close to accurate. Remember this is measuring SWE, not inches snow coverage. By my math there should be well over 20' of snow depth at this sensor location.
I believe it was at least 20' prior to last week's storms, so, yeah. Nuts, eh?
^ NPS site says on 2/23 they measured 12' snow depth @ 44% snow water density (64.5" WC) at Lake Helen.
http://www.nps.gov/lavo/planyourvisi...conditions.htm
But since then over 20" of SWE have been added, according to the sensor, which would be more like 25% density given the age of the snow.
Lets revisit this conversation in a couple of weeks after a few more dumps :D
Doh. I was just extrapolating from SWE. I texted t-money. (Heh.) I'll see if he knows, though chances are he hasn't been out there since the recent storms. He did say this morning that "Snow surveys are going to be a bitch up at higher elevations."
Planning on skiing Shasta first weekend of April, conditions and weather dependent of course. Will update here following the mission if it pans out.
I predict good things. Photo I saw yesterday showed 10-15 feet on the ground at BF.
Looks like another couple feet coming out of this storm. Jeezus those 2 mountains have gotten hammered lately. Gonna be a great spring!

Ski bum from Canada checkin in, anyone from Oregon want to trip down to Shasta? I'm backpacking around mt Hood but I'll pitch in for whatever
Lassen from Almanor yesterday.

I was up weekend before last and it was $$. The upper mountain was firm but as we all know that place changes by the minute. 8' banks in the parking lot.
Skinned to about 10,200' on Casaval Ridge Saturday. It was buttery smooth from about 9,500', and only slightly worse above that. Sticky for the last half mile or so to Bunny Flat.

Conditions were pretty good yesterday (4/7). I skied down avalanche gulch, left of the heart. The entrance was entirely rime ice for the first 300ft or so followed by a few punchy turns. I found spring corn ~13k and below until hitting the base of Lake Helen. There was a bit of water skiing back to Bunny Flat, but it was still fun nonetheless.
Have to push our mission planned for this weekend back because of weather. Glad everything is looking good though. Should be a long ski touring season up there.
Anyone head up to the devastated area today at Lassen? Conditions report?
And what's the road plowage situation?
Since NPS pushed the North gate opening from Friday to today...went poking around Shasta. Healthy, will be skiing to the lot at BF for weeks at least. Afternoon effort to stretch the legs after AM turns:
