You're comment on west vs. east intelligence levels is interesting. When I graduated from high school the college with the highest SAT scores was in Southern California. Yes, you're quite correct, and, in fact, my son and I once went down a double black at Flatton backwards just to see how gnar it was.

Apparently you missed the threads where trail ratings are for the places being rated, not in a general sense.

Fixed it for you. Double blacks in the real mountains usually means cliffs and chutes. For example, the ghee, often cited as a fairly unchallenging mountain in terms of terrain, all the double black has 15 to 40 foot cliffs that can be either aired or passed through by rocky chutes. And there are some other steep cliff bands with 10 foot airs that only rate a single black. I think if AZ Greg would post up something other than recycled drivel from Killington's marketing department we'd shut up. Except for Tuckermann's, I've never seen the footy or pic to back up the claims. More realistic marketing woud be "we got some decent hills and you are gonna pay through the nose for our massive snow making infrastructure cuz some winters, well, it barely snows but we got that covered (except for that every third year when its too warm to run the snow guns and your pass gets you muddy slush and dead leaves)."

What he said. I've skied some of the toughest runs in the West (including the Back Bowls at Vail) and I've got to say I'm not that impressed. My guess is that you've never skied Jaws of Death at Mount Snow...

As for the comments regarding trail ratings they are INDEED standardized by the National Ski Patrol using a complex algorithm that considers pitch, trail width, moguls per foot, general topography, average base depth and a number of additional variables I can't remember at the moment.

Hmmmmm, you are probably right. But then again, perpetually shitty conditions are also why so many great halfpipe riders come out of the east. An odd thing to brag on... We get so many deep powder days on wide open slopes that pounding down a trail of icy moguls is, how do I say this.......a complete waste of a day in the mountains and a great place to jack yourself up and miss out on the rest of the season. We don't get real moguls at the ghee untill about 2-3 weeks of no snow and sun rot so, yeah, I only see moguls as a sign that in-bounds conditions really suck ass. If semi-vertical ice skating is what makes you happy, more power to ya, you can have it. We got slack and back country galore so why would you want to pachinko ball down an icy egg crate when you could be hiking out a gate at 9 to 10k? Oh yeah, the whole eastern itty bitty titty resort thing....well, ya still got bumps, I guess.

Hi neckdeep! I must beg to divaricate with you, we certainly know what "real mountains" are here in the northeast. Killington has a vertical drop of 3050 feet, your local hill "Grand Targhee" has a vertical drop of 2270 feet, so we can easily see which is the the "real mountain" , can't we? In addition to that, Grand Targhee has a well-deserved reputation for being flat and boring, unlike Killington which is far more steep and challenging and is many times the size in skiable acreage as well. The average Killington regular would put to shame a peer from Targhee, trust me. When you score your first powder day in any of the multitude of Killington glades like "Anarchy", "The Throne", "Chop Chop" or "Patsy", you will be grinning from ear to ear, I promise you! Also, the conditions are actually more dependable and consistent here due to the superior snowmaking, the terrain is truly fabulous, the partying is unmatched anywhere(can you say "hot New Jersey Italian babes?") and the setting is Norman Rockwell-esque! Pursuing the plethora of hot NYC/NJ and Boston "chicas" in their stretch pants can be even better than the great skiing, but I must warn you they are quite feisty and outspoken, unlike the laid-back and masculine western gals. To the rest of the maggots and everyone else reading, if you are weary of the juvenile dickwaving by gapers like neckdeep and are looking for a bonafide state-of-the-art snowriding forum, I would like to open wide our cyber-gate to you to so you can "start fresh" at our friendly forums. I can assure you that "newbies"'(jongs) are welcomed with open arms by our entire community(unlike here at TGR), and there is no "hazing period" or rudeness tolerated. My legs are literally on fire whenever I ski that full 3050 feet of vert at Killington. Last time I did it my legs started cramping during the last 500 ft. Must have been linked to the extreme change in attitude.

I've been out west (never skied), but I've seen and driven up some of the mountains. Having grown up in New England, and driven up Mt. Washington, I think New England has way steeper ski runs. I couldn't see it from the road, but I hear Mt. Tuckerman is so steep, they closed the lift.

My big complaint, is the ski areas out west close before I get up. None of them have night skiing, but I do know Aspen and Whistler have some awesome clubs! (Nothing like the Pickle Barrel or Wobbly Barn, but still pretty cool!)

Yeah, we got some stuff that looks like that before the snow fills it in plus 10 times more than that. Looks like there's only two to three feet of base, at most. Is that the best you got cuz thin snow over rocks is prety much the early season norm out here; that pic could be 100 places at the Village....seriously,doubting easties, just go to BIG Sky.....they got runs studded with rockpiles like that go for over a thousand feet, rocks,rocks,rocks.... plus long near vertical chutes that only open in big snow years. There's stuff there and at The Village that just plain scares me...Tuckermann's is the only comparable thing, I've seen.

But this isn't really about east vs. west, if you are having fun in the east, more power to ya. This is about how much some of us hate AZ Greg and the lies he tells to sucker people into his site so he can make more money and promote the eastern resorts that kick back to him. Greg is obviously impervious to ridicule so all I can do is insult his patrons and turn Greg's lame as fuck social network marketing efforts into negative publicity until he goes away.

Have you sampled the night skiing at Keystone? I would say it ranks slightly lower than Whaleback, but higher than Pat's Peak on the difficulty scale.

I think so. Easties are the only people that ever mention it. It sounds like a consolation prize for having to live in Boston, if you really like hiking and a chance to ski into a watery grave. I've seen pics with several hundred people there at once so it must be the ONLY thing like it wherever it is. Kind of looks like a big snow filled canyon. I couldn't tell you how many of those we have in the West. Lots. I got two behind my house that dwarf Tuckerman's; 3000-4000 feet from ridge to creek and six miles long. Skiers here are obsessed with peaks and bowls, ravines not so much.
