Real nice work.
Hey all Southwest Montana Mags-
I'm headed to Big Sky tonight to stay with my buddy for a couple days, going to be doing mostly resort skiing, but still kind of broke and just recently got into touring (trekkers, cheap rigged skins) and if I could save a day ticket and go tour some low angle stuff (ya know check out the trees and stuff) I'd be super stoked. So if anyone has any reccomendations where I could go with relative safety (low angle/fun trees), I have no avi training or gear, or if someones around and wants to show me some stuff as well, all I really know is Beehive Basin is a heavily toured area.
Thanks Guys!
ouch, that one hit home eh?
here is the monday morning quarterbacking from the experts, interesting read:
http://arc.lib.montana.edu/snow-scie...ISSW_O-065.pdf
The thing I find interesting is that they were not able access the bowl early because of "lingering mechanical difficulties with the tram" So, bad layer, gets loaded and by the time the patrol finally get to it, it is stuck there and they can't get it to move. It was not patrols fault and sorry for insinuating, it was clearly management not having the beer can running. Would they have been charged with incompetance had their been 20 fatalities? This is the largest in bounds avalanche during operation ever I beleive????
What's your point exactly? You originally were attempting to criticize Bunion, I believe, who does not even work for Big Sky. After initially criticizing the Big Sky Ski Patrol you backed off on that and instead started to attack Big Sky management? What exactly are you getting at?
EDIT: Sorry, clicked "Post" and then I realized that I was asking questions that required a reasonable person to answer. You clearly are not a reasonable person and won't have any coherent or meaningful response as there really wasn't any coherent or meaningful response that went into anything you said. Disregard the above please.
Let's keep all this kind of crap out of this thread and get back to the stoke and talk about skiing in this corner of the world. Here's hoping Pres Day Weekend is snowy and safe.
Hey Johnny, thanks for posting that Link.
Scotty Savage is a good buddy and deserves more attention for his work in avalanche education.
I left Big Sky and moved over to MLB in 2001/02 so not sure what your point is (if you really ever had one).
However if you are trying to demonstrate how much Big Sky and Moonlight and the Y/C have on our plates when it comes to hazard mitigation you have succeeded.
All 3 areas do a damn good job dealing with complex terrain and a difficult snowpack.
So .... you are welcome.
Jon C should write a book, It would be titled "I am the most miserable fuck on the planet and I know more then you"
In other news........ Thanks to the Bridger people who make it out with me. Front page, big props to Bridger and the people that make it be.

And since everyone else has a facebook page, i guess I might as well to. Maybe there is something to this ski photo thing?

That John C alias is one hell of a troll. Very interesting alter ego someone has.
Ned- Great little viddy, thanks so much for not having any POV shit in it. Love the E. Bud, probably my second favorite drainage in SW MT so far. There are some beasts up there for sure.
Interesting read, cool to see such attention to detail. I trust the local Ski Patrol are doing their best and are very passionate about what they do, but...
They don't call it avalanche hazard "reduction" for nuthin. Who ever expected skiing at Big Sky/Moonlight/Bridger to be 100% "safe"? Lots of ways to die or get hurt badly are one wrong turn away. Large slides like the one in Liberty are unfortunate and maybe there is room for even more precise avalanche mitigation in the future but we're not there yet. It's an imperfect science, even with explosives, so you know the risks. Go skiing and bring back some stoke for those who are broke.
(Thanks Ned)
Has anybody ever skied the Quake Lake slide (or heard of it being done)? I drove by it a few days ago and it looks damn tasty...

I just want to hear the joke. Here, I'll start.
Where do you get dragon milk?
edit: Boom Heir, saw an article in Backcountry a few years ago about skiing the Quake path, author ends up triggering a slide while on it. I'll see if I still have it around.
In other news... when you live in Denver like I do you drive more than you shred. But not to worry, I ski vicariously through my homeboy's blog. Fits nicely, buried here on pg 13 of the Jellystone thread. You'll all dig on it, maybe even john cunt.

Dee Are that is awesome. Just the hit of ski porn I needed. I took a walk up to Blackmore basin on Tuesday and made a few powder turns,

felt good at the time but alas, that is the last I'll be seeing of the mountains again for awhile. This has been quite a rollercoaster, but I think I am beggining to learn how to ride it. Can't wait to get out again, you can be sure I'm motivated.
Tone, what exactly are you dealing with? Gettin lots of swelling, or just big time pain? Just curious. Glad you got out, looks like a nice day.
Whoever makes the vids up there is getting pretty good. It was puking so hard at the end of the day today it was tough to 10 feet in front of me and I heard the tram was 0 viz all day. Tomorrow oughta be real good.
Some Big Sky stoke from today. Busiest I've ever seen the mountain, but as usual the people spread out and there was a bunch of fresh snow piled up from the last couple days mixed in with a healthy helping of rocks. Skied Pinnacles, a couple Bowl laps, the Gullies (anyone who was in the tram line and saw my friend tomahawk through 3rd, he's fine...) and Highway up on Challenger. Should still be some leftovers for tomorrow, and hopefully less people.

Thank you, and I mean it.
This is neither here nor there, but I wear a transceiver at all times when skiing off Lone Peak these days. I was talking to a volunteer patroller one day and he suggested it and I thought that's a damn good idea. As he said, What are you trying to do, save batteries?
O.K. bumping this thread for the folks who are surely going to be getting out and after it.
Yesterday and last night we picked up deceptively small amounts of snow down south in BS. 3-5-7" at most.
However the winds have been just about right to load the shit out of things and the temps have been steadily rising from very chilly on Monday to downright balmy today. We now have an upside down new snowpack on top of the garbage that has been with us all season but til now has lacked the load needed to wake up.
Saw lots of 2'+ deep pockets yesterday, probably much deeper this a.m.
Watch your ass and be careful, especially if heading to Lone Lake or other easily accessible areas off the tram or from Beehive.
Please, no more "vibes" threads.

Dumpage for the little guys! 3 ft at Lost Trail, 25" at Showdown. Woohoo!
Heading up to Bozeman from SLC tomorrow with the girlfriend to pick up a 4 Wheel Camper. Most likely skiing Saturday/Sunday at Moonlight, maybe Big Sky if a deal comes through. Black Jacket, Dark Gray Pants, RC112's. If anyone is going to be around and wants to show us the goods shoot me a pm.
Bunion-
Thanks for hooking up my bro and his chica, much appreciated! They were stoked for the change of scenery from the Flathead and loved the lack of "ya bra" vibe that both BS and Bridger can fall victim to. I owe ya!
Most of ON3P's 12/13 demo fleet will be at Big Sky tomorrow (sorry, not bridger this time around) as our guys roll through Montana on their way to Powder Week.
Here is the details they left me....
"We will be at the pay parking lot by the summit hotel at 8am to get people out on skis, ski until lunch, meet at 1230 PM to swap out skis and ski until 4 PM.
We will need anyone demoing skis to fill out a liability release form and if you are under 18 your parents need to sign it. Email kip@on3pskis.com if you need to have your parents sign ahead of time."
Look for this following car...

Wish we could have done bridger as well, but not in the cards this time.
Excellent. I will be there to demo some skis. Pumped for this!
Nice! You fellas are going to miss the storm rolling in. Well... You'll get snow most of tomorrow.

Missed out on the pow at Bridger today, but had a fun day at the really Big Sky. An A-Z, 3 trams, (1/2 hour wait each time- seems like it's a little more crowded there these days;granted it was a weekend day) a few Dakotas and several high-speed Andesite runs. Also spotted a very funny "I'll Go Back To Bridger When You Go Back To Michigan" sticker retort in the ongoing "rivalry". I'm a Bridger guy, but feel lucky to have a high quality alternative option and change of pace nearby. Lone Peak is a most impressive massif and it sure is fun to ski at a different area from time to time. Sure is nice to have it feel like full on ski season finally!
That's pretty funny. I haven't seen that sticker before. Admittedly, I used to get caught up in the whole Big Sky-Bridger rivalry. Now, I don't get it. Both hills have their drawbacks. But you're right on; we all need to consider ourselves exceptionally lucky to have three world class areas within 45 miles.
Saw that as well...somewhere on the Triple I think? Coverage has really improved up there immensely and it was nice to be able to ski most of the Peak without worrying about hitting a rock field on the traverses and tomahawking to my death. Snow was great up there too. Skied 2 trams with a pretty short (5 cabins or so?) wait. One unfortunate dude lost his ski up near the top of one of the A-Zs and he did a very slow and miserable looking sideslip down the untracked chute. Got a lot of laughs out of the tram line. Great to finally have some snow up there.
Edit to add pictures
demoing some ON3Ps in Buffalo Jump. This sweet looking pocket of fluff turned out to be a pile of rocks.

Just got a marketing email from Big Sky - I guess they're doing Disneyland-style 'fast passes' for the tram where you can now reserve a walk-on tram at a certain specified time slot. Have they been doing this before? Surely lots of 'otans will be jumping all over this for the ride up and back down...
