Yeah yeah yeah - I'll be back in the city for the last two weeks of July. I'll do it on skates.
i had a fight with my surgeon last week about skates. he told me 'dont even think about asking about skating again till august'. suck. for you guys it would be the equivalent of season ending injury BEFORE your season started. so im jealous. was looking forward to tearing around the city on some sebas.
but yeh i like beer. only problem is the fight that ended with the above statement was started because i mentioned that i was road riding. that set him off. so out of guilt (even though i think his argument was whack) the bike is back on the trainer so ive no way to get into the city. though ill prolly sneak back out by mid july. my riding has decreased 90% since i took it off the street and now that my dvd player is broken theres no motivation to get on the trainer.
I'm not back in the city till July 16th, so you ought to be good by then, Nihiles.
Any interest in a mag ski house somewhere this winter? Preferably somewhere in VT.
Yo Gman...where you looking to get a house in VT?
I've rented seasonally the last 2 years with a small group of 5 people. Close to Magic, Bromley and Stratton.
I'd be interested in a house... got any details, projected monthly costs, etc?
I might be interested in a house share.
Preferably more southern vermont like a place such as magic just because coming from NYC is already a hassle enough. Magic has passes for pretty cheap, the downside is no midweek stuff unless it is dumping more then 6 inches. No projected costs because it depends on how much interest there is etc. I don't need cable, internet or any super luxuries. As long as a place has reasonably good heating and floor space I'm happy. If you guys have good ideas for places to look then by all means clue me in.
Found this near magic: http://burlington.craigslist.org/vac/1890726994.html
How much are people willing to pay per month/total?
Throwing my hat in the ring here too! After 28 years in New England, I'm moving to Long Island. I've done 25-30 days a season pretty consistently, and plan to get as close to that as possible from my new home. I'm self-employed, so am super flexible, and hope to meet up with lots of you guys over the next few seasons.
Up in the air ATM, as it's going to depend on what my GF's workload looks like, and I'm a total NY JONG so have no idea how realistic it even is to get to VT on Thursday/Friday nights from Huntington. Fighting traffic to drive 5 hours sounds like torture, but I've never skiied the Catskills/Adirondacks so I'm not sure what the tradeoff looks like.
I did mostly Stowe/Jay/MRG and Kmart from Boston last season, but long drive makes that look infeasible. I read through the 12 pages here and am torn between getting into a house at Kmart and sucking up the drive every weekend or going nomadic and doing a combination of bus and shorter trips to Hunter/Windham/Okemo...
I don't think windham and hunter on weekends are going to do it for you coming from there.
Yeah, that might drive you out of the sport altogether. I know people who drive to S. VT from LI and it sounds pretty hellish (from NYC isn't great, either). Wonder if the ferry would help? Not sure where Huntington is in relation to the LI ferry terminal. I'm guessing it wouldn't help, but I'm sure someone here has experience with driving from LI.
from my limited experience, hunter is fine during the midweek but becomes an absolute shit show on the weekends. being relatively close to nyc(2.5hrs) all the urban jeans skiers flock to hunter and cunt up the lifts on the weekend. I've got a friend whose family has a house in east wallingford, VT which is still a reasonable distance to okemo,k-mart and magic. the downside is that it will probably be a weekend and only with my friend kind of spot. if there is enough interest for a mag house I may be willing to throw down for it but right now there isn't a ton.
It's not that bad from LI. I live in Westbury and I could do K town every weekend if I wanted to. I guess you just get used to it.
Hunter is pretty brutal on the weekends and god forbid they get some snow.
Last winter I wanted to slit my wrists when I went there after the NE got slammed. If you are going midweek its a much different experience.
In general I would say catskills for a day and go further north for anything more than a day.
I found a couple cheap places to stay by Kmart for around 30 a night. I recently found another one in mad river valley for similar price, opting for that this winter.
Thanks guys - lots of great info here in the thread. We'll be about half an hour west of the Port Jefferson ferry, which looks like it's about net zero in terms of drive time to VT, but avoiding city traffic is nice, plus a boat ride will break up the drive. So it's good to know that's an option. Thanks for the heads up on Hunter crowds. That's a bit of a bummer, but it sounds like the touring is decent in the area, so it's good to know that's an option on weekends when I can't get to VT.
i never look in this thread but i might be interested in a small part of a house share. my ability to come to vt is somewhat limited so if there are incremental parts i would be down with it. i agree with the consensus- for a single day- cats, more than a day- vt. midweek only in the cats (unless its plattekill)
hey mikefut, im from huntington also. The drive to southern vt really isnt terrible on the weekends, and the skiing is so much better then windham, hunter, etc.
Sounds like there are a few people interested, Brokesomeribs, Blackdiamonds, mikefut, gman....
Ive been putting out feelers for houses this week. Ive got probably six guys currently interested but we could always used a few more to keep costs down.
We try to keep it between $1k - $1250 for the season Dec - March. this includes utilities, plowing, firewood etc....
Right now we are looking in Jamaica, about 10 min to stratton and pretty close to mt snow, magic and bromley.
just seeing this proposed house thread here - i'd recommend that people also look at staying at the hostel tevere (www.hosteltevere.com) - it's $30-35 per night, has a cool bar/restaurant downstairs and is spitting distance from sugarbush and mad river glen...they also do group rate discounts, so if we get together a crew even less bread needs to be spent....
MRG is fun but is an extra 1.5hrs away from places like magic. I know that's not that much time but it makes a difference when you're tired at the end of the day.
My ride up to VT consists of a friend who lives in hoboken but keeps his truck at his family's house in northern NJ. Would love to check out jay but its another two hours north from where we usually go. When it gets closer to the season starting I'm sure more people will start to chime in.

Checking in from Brooklyn Heights.
This will be my first winter in NYC, and I'm looking to somehow get to the goods. I've got a place in very close to the Tuckerman's trailhead but no convenient way of getting there. If anyone is heading up give me a holler.
Just checking in dudes. I missed last week's storm but I'm glad some of you got out there and shralped it. Pulling all my boards out the closet and scraping the summer storage wax off tonight. Let's stay in touch.
any NYC mags going to the MSP premier thursday?
Yup absolutely agreed. I'm going to chime in on a few comments from above (above in this post, not from the Heavenly Divine)
1. Jay Peak is fucking awesome. I'm from NY and have been skiing VT all my life. I never went to Jay Peak until I was 26 and it blew my mind. It is not like the rest of the ski resorts in VT, it is truly a different kind of mountain. I almost felt like it was a shrunken mountain from the Rockies. Plus, the town, or lack thereof, rocks. There a lodge called Grampa Grump's (or Grunt's, not sure) that has the most BOMB free breakfast every morning starting at 6 am. The hungover 300 pound cook yells profanities at you while he serves you, and some hippie sparks a bizzle with his dog over by the fireplace. You can also opt for a "little grump" which is a dilapidated condo that is likely to have the food from the previous guest still in the fridge.
2. THAT'S how you book a ski trip! Oh, I didn't tell you yet. Here's how you book a ski trip from NYC out West on the cheap: Do what I did:: This::: For $260 round trip (including fees) I fly out of JFK 6 pm Wednesday, March 16. Arrive at midnight, my buddy picks me up and we go party in preparation for St Patty's day. Thursday we boogie. Friday at balls am we head for Steamboat, ski Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I fly the redeye back from Denver --> JFK Sunday night at midnight. Arrive at JFK 6 am. Go to work. Sleep. One crappy thing is that JetBlue is going to charge me to ship my skis, $40 each way:( I may just demo while I'm out there :)
3. I've spent a lot of time at Killington and I've learned two things: Its a blessing; Its a curse. It is a curse because the mountain has a capacity of 20,000 people, and you will literally sit in traffic if you come or go during (literally) rush hour. However, it is a blessing for the exact same reason -- it drives people away from Pico, and leaves Pico empty and beautiful ALL THE TIME! Pico is one hell of a little mountain, and pound for pound its a great VT mountain. Its steep. And, if you hike just a hundred feet or so you can access the "A," B" and "C" runs and all the powderific trees in between them.
SKI THE EAST!
I'll be at the MSP movie tonight if anyone is going.
Gman...you going?
Dudes, Belleayre is talking about opening 11/13 with a $25 ticket.
If the forecast shows long term cold, Hunter might join in. I kind of doubt it, but I wouldn't complain. Anyway, who is up for skiing some man made if there's no pow around in two weeks?
I'm a definite maybe for the 13th if work doesn't get in the way.
I'm in for what's good. Anyone else heading to Irving Plaza the 13th for LTW? If the white's falling, i propose a before AND after par-tay! :yourock:
^^^ML242 and I will be there also. We should meet up for a little pre-game action before the show.
I'm in as well. Where's the pregame?
Anybody into winter camping?
It doesn't look good for belleayre saturday... I think they're doing some hike to jibs, but no actual skiing.
Who wants to help trim on sunday?
