Chasing My Dream Daily Driver - The Heritage Lab FL105

Ok, here’s my initial thoughts after 4 days of ripping about on the new FL 105 in the 178cm: BOOM!!

MO / HL killing it with this one. Just a perfect daily driver and all about ski. Mounted mine up on the rec of 77 cm from the tail & let em fly. STH2 WTR as a binder. Here’s the beta.

Initial thought- flex is smooth & not too stout. Rocker lines looked greater in shop than on the snow, textured topsheet was sweet and well detailed. Marshal’s hand tune is well worth $100 + ; smooth and consistent; ready to go. The bases absorbed a thorough waxing cycle twice and then remained soaked for the duration. Edges are wicked thick and robust.

Groomers- 2 footed or racer style, they just wanted more. They wanted to zoom. Medium radius was a solid base, but you could slarve em tighter or let em make 11’s down the fall line. Back to lift was pure joy and the suppleness of the shovels softened out the chatter and cross ruts.

From the pic above, you can hi angle close down the radius if desired. Just tip / slice.

Side trail / Poor man’s powder- smooth & surfy ; narrow the stance some and let we fly. Subtle ankle motions were all that was required to turn em up & drive the length of ski.

8-10” of Powder - Home / Ground Zero. They rocked. Shift the weight onto the arch / heel and zip off. They bounced, pounced & even dolphin turned. The surface area and the rocker lines let you charge the hill with BDE as you crushed the tourons & beaters. The stability of the design was consistent and confident inspiring- the FL 105 also has the amazing quality of being supremely balanced in the air (more later). When I was tossed, the FL 105 crutched my balance & aided posture back to security.

Moguls / Trees - The odd combination of a rather balanced mount and the lite weight made short swing and rapid direction changes with ease. Again, when upon finding yourself in the air, the skis seems to have uncanny air awareness and poise. This seemed to be the defining attribute of this model. It just found a way home time after time.

Chalk / dust on injected - If you get stuck on such whacked surfaces, it’s got your back like a Lazy Boy. What was missing was the tip flap.

Future Missions - I can say with confidence this will be the ‘King of Spring’ ski.

Parting thoughts - this FL 105 & Comp 87/99 would be the steeze for a clean ‘n crisp quiver. I’d scoop up a hoodie while you’re at it & you’ll be KOM wherever you call home.

Seriously props to Marshal for reminding us that we can reject being neutered corporate $hitbag clones & FKNA rock. We are not the same, don’t miss this opportunity to take these for a lap.

Another little data point from my end. I have extensive time on FL113s from last season, and been skiing exclusively the 192 105s so far this season. Except for a couple of runs on the R87s, that is.

Today, I was just chasing my son all over the home hill. 10 inches of dust on crust outside the groomed runs. Moguls have started to form, something I've never really been into skiing before.

Marshal claims a 10% reduction in stiffness in the 105s vs 113s, and I'm very much inclined to agree with that assessment.

This is key, because what should be ungainly beasts in moguls really are not. Lead the still pretty stuff tips into the curves of the moguls, tails are supportive enough, but still nimble enough, to just follow the tips and your shins' and shoulders' lead. Super fun. I know they're not mogul skis, but they sort of work.

I still prefer the nastiness of the FL113s, in the right conditions, but for the boring ass conditions we've got so far this season, the 105s are just a that much quicker and more fun and nimble charger. Neither skis give a fuck about conditions.

Great stuff dudes!! Got the 192’s mounted last night and going to take them out today in the arctic air mass we have. Can’t wait but going to a little hopping it warms. Lol.

192cm at -12.5, tighten them boots!

They have subtly, and NOT so subtly, smoothed out the entire mountain!
They ski like they were built for this place, and need the space and speed to really sing.

Ok, I've been trying to find a place in the quiver for HL's for a while now. I was planning for the FR110, but it could be a while before I really need to fill that slot.

I'm looking for a ski that can do daily duty coaching Big Mountain. Steeps, ice, chalk, some pow (I'll get on big sticks if it really dumps), chop and really tight spaces (trees, chutes, rock gardens).

I'm not a ski racer, I'll be the first to admit it. I can drive a ski, but don't turn a ski like a racer. I generally ski progressive skis with generous rocker lines. Everything in my quiver is a twin.

I've been looking to add a slightly more traditional all mountain ski and was going to hit the easy button with a K2 Mindbender 99Ti.

Thoughts on grabbing the FL105 for this slot? I'm 6' 160lbs. Thinking the 185 is the sweet spot. I'm primarily concerned with how these will noodle tight spaces. I know I can open them up, but my days are spent doing both. Waiting on the kids to ski a line, then charging after them. Maybe poking through trees and rocks looking for things to jump off of or soft snow.

Thoughts? should I hold off for the FR110?

Skied my 192 FL105’s the other daayyy.
Mount: -12
Detune: didn’t touch the sidecut edges but did detune tapers some more. Tune felt really nice out of the wrapper. I just like my tapers extra dull.
Firm edge-able groomers: they hold an edge beautifully. So calm underfoot. Nice mix of dampness. Not crazy damp like the R99 Comps, probably 15% less damp. Perfect really as it lets you have better snow feel which I prefer in a soft snow oriented ski. The flex allows you to make any turn shape with confidence. They do feel so good making that 34m turn. I was able to make very comfy one footed turns at major speed comfortably stacked on that edge and the ski didn’t do anything weird. Dropping both skis and oh man, the dial just went to 11.
Firm packed off piste:
Excellent edge hold. That dampness really shined here. Carve turns wherever you want. Ski any speed you like confidently. They go off edge beautifully and balanced.
Boot top chopped pow:
Oh boy, this thing is like a scalpel being guided by a monster truck. They really eat up chop. Cut right through and keep truckin. The stiff tip is magical here. It wants to stay planted and cut through chop as opposed to ride up over it. They really smooth this type of conditions out.
Boot top/ mid shin pow:
Really fun here. Not as loose as I was thinking they might be, more pow carve. I can probably achieve this by a detune but not sure I want to. Man they just want the fall line and to charge, happy to oblige as well! The tips are interesting in the flex if the 192. They didn’t want to sink nor super plane up. They were happy to by just under and when pressed stayed exactly the same. If I didn’t look at them I would have no idea what they were doing other than making a path for the rest of the ski to charge through. They just blast through anything without flinching.
Air: Didn’t really hit anything yudge, we don’t have many options here plus I’m getting older so I keep shit in check. 5-8’ers into chop were nothing. They take off well, balanced in the air with a great landing platform. I’ll let the whipper snappers send them.
Take away:
The ski is a chargers dream. Eats vert and anything in the way. The sidecut plus flex profile is dialed. Damp but not overdone, “most metal non-metal” is spot on. It is absolutely a LP105 killer.

Hey man! Sorry for the slow response. I'd say that the R99 AM is probably the most similar to the mindbender 99 if you are looking for a much better version of that kind of ski. Hard to find though, as I am sold out, not sure when more will get pressed, etc. Regarding the FR110, I think it is a more soft-snow biased ski than what you are looking for.

regarding the FL105... I am not sure how you would like to be honest. In terms of use, it lines up perfectly. But you would just want to gut-ccheck if you are looking for something decidedly less progressive and will require quite a good bit more input than neutrally mounted more surfy type ski. If so, I think it could be interesting. But you will definitely need to ski it with a more compact stance and hands forward style, and intentionally keep your shoulders square to the fall line. But you don't NEED racer steeze. But they will ceratinly make you want to ski like a racer, haha.

I do think the R110, while potentially a bit wide for what you are talking about, might be a better fit. It carves like a fricking boss, prefers to be skied more neutrally, and releases turns quite nice if you are drifting big lazy tracks on steep chalk. Just FWIW, I am opening preorder on a couple Limited Edition skis for Fall delivery, including the R110 in the next day or two.

Arild has been testing a 105 pressed with the flat/near reverse profile from the FL113 this season. It’s quite a special ski, but definitely a different ride than the FL105. I also did a run of the 110 shape with a modified but similar flat/long low rocker profile, called the R110… hence the R105!

I feel like I would like them all in different places. I think the FR110 is too similar to my Hotshots and Mindsticks, but slotted right in the middle waist wise. Probably even driftier being full reverse.

The FL105 sounds really fun, but maybe a bit too much ski for my average day with the kids.

The R110 really has my interest, but it's getting away from narrower spot I'm looking to fill.

The last flat(ish) tail ski I skied, I had a blast on. It was the 184 Peak 98. Easy to ski, but substantial enough to go fast on. It's part of why I was looking at the 99Ti. They look very similar.
