I have a pair of WC SW that I think could be improved fo my needs by removing the SW panel. Has anyone modified their Zips in this way?
This pair was a gift and had never been skied when I received them, so to me it's preferable to modify than purchase new.

That's a great question, and I've wondered the same thing. I like the fit of my WCSW but aside from not needing all that stiffness/support, they were just too bulky for my Head Raptors and I ended up grabbing the new Corsa. I'd like to find a use for the WCSW, though, and removing that panel would make them more versatile.Quote:

I was about to do the same then just said screw it and bought Garas. I had picked the SWers up for a decent price so it was not going to be a big loss if I butchered them. But in the end I figured I'd mess them up too much, especially where that SW aspect is sewn into the lace trim and where it meets the sole covering. I just figured I'd have to leave a trim of plastic or try and re-bond a bunch if I removed it all and neither option was appealing. Anyway, looking back I wished I had: I'd still have the full leather guts and have saved a few hundred $ even if the end result didn't look ideal, I think it would have worked.Quote:

IMHO, unless you know you want that SW aspect, you don't want that SW aspect.
The plastic is lightly glued. Once you cut the stitching, you just peel it off. The glue isn’t that strong.
I wouldn’t pull the stitches at the lace trim. On the GFT I would just cut it at that point and leave a bit of plastic on the liner. I haven’t looked at the SW to see how it interacts with the sole. That could be problematic.
Here's a new one. Anybody have a customer "complain" that they now have too much room in the toebox compared the stock liner? I spend enough time punching toe boxes that I'm thinking this is a good thing, no?

Just got Gara’s and this was my immediate complaint. So much vertical space in the forefoot. Drew at ZF said this is actually a common complaint, even among some of their athletes. They are looking for a cap type solution and asked to keep them posted on what works.Quote:

I have this issue over the top of my forefoot. For intuition liners in my bc boots, I’ve glued 2-4mm of material over the top of the forefoot. For zips I use a thin shim on top of the boot board.Quote:

This is why I like my zips so much. I barely need a toe box punch anymore. I had a pair of boots that were fit with the stock liner. Then I got my zips and immediately noticed more space. I dropped down to a 97 last on my new boots and needed a lot less work and the boot/liner combo feels a lot better. Both boots are Lange xt3. I feel like it’s very important to have zips then get fit with them as opposed to what I did and got zips after already being fit with a different liner.
Agree. I like the spacious toebox. I can stick a toe warmer on without issue in my LV Langes. I have zero issues with my feet moving around. My instep and ankle are totally locked in place. I think my feet stay warmer in the ZF, too.Quote:

Perfect for baking the Zipfits for a bit (~120-140C is the ref baking temp per the ZF website).
Baking the ZF liners has definitely made them more comfy. Prolly should have done it right away.
