Holy shit. Good friends indeed.
Wow, those chicks are badass. 45 minutes fighting an enraged mountain lion? Smart to get the bike on top of it and pin it down. One chick stabbed it repeatedly with a small knife. Holy shit.

So, does this top the killing a cougar boy stabbing it in the head with a pen, or is it just a variation on a theme? Definitely high mark for team work.
Nice red diamond this afternoon. 3.5 to 4ft

It coiled up kinda lazy and barely rattled. They're just waking up

Total badass.
I might choose not to show my wife this story.

For sure.
I remember a thread someone posted on a local MTB forum asking what people carry on rides for protection. And a whole bunch of wannabe tough guys piped in how they carry knives to fight off mtn lions. I'm not sure they understand how lions attack people. Good luck fighting back when the cat has your face or neck in its mouth. Tough as she is this likely would have had a different outcome if she'd been solo.
Another one from today.... roadrunner

Exactly.
Some of my friends carry side arms during archery elk season, as a few have had cat encounters over the years. Our joke about the firearms is that the effective range must be less than an inch because you'll be shooting it while it's attached to your neck.
It's very, very unusual to know they're there unless they want you to know. Otherwise, you'll know it when it hits you.

If they mean you harm, you will know it when they latch onto your neck, but in all actuality, it is far more common for them to announce their presence because they do not mean you harm and are smart enough to not want anything to do with humans. I've been growled at by them twice. Each time just one single unmistakable growl in the darkness to make me aware of their presence, then nothing more as they could see me backing away. One followed for a few steps, I think just to get a better look at me walking away, but neither really seemed actually aggressive at all.
They're definitely out now that we've had some warmer weather.
Saw the first two plus a bobcat all within 1/4 mile of each other on Monday. Then the third one today. Also been rattled at by a couple that were nearby in the bushes.

A sad wildlife story. Sad for the young man. Sad for the lion.

I'm not shedding any tears for that lion.
Would you shed a tear for a Nevada moose?

Interesting that moose only moved into the US 150 years ago.
100 moose doesn't sound like too many but I guess there's not much for moose to eat in Nevada.
Skunk wouldn't get off the trail last night. Seems to like the bridges we built in this canyon

Great shot
Had a pretty cool Great Horned sighting while sitting in the hot tub at the place we were dog sitting a few nights ago. Swooped in directly in front/above us and into the adjacent pine tree.
