That's true, of course - our season is over. But this current bout of depression isn't about this season. It's about the fact that, as mets fans, we've gone through years and years of disappointment. See, I could easily switch out "Mets" with "Cubs" and that would be exactly how I'm feeling about the Cubs post season chances. They'll probably go up 3-2 in the NLCS and Bartman's brother will decide to attend the game, front row behind the bullpen in LF. They always end up shitting the bed which is obvious as they haven't won the WS in 99 years. I have no expetations for them to win any post season games. Anything they do in the post season is a bonus. The fact that they fielded a winning team this year, or any year for that matter, is amazing. And it's not that they shouldn't have had a winning season with the payroll they have...it's that they're the Cubs and they always fuck up.

exactly!!

now - imagine this - for a season or two, they start playing so well that that perception of them - that they'll always blow it - starts to change!

imagine the excitement!

then, they blow it. And in a spectacular manner.

Not only is it a tremendous let-down, it reinforces the "they'll always blow it" mentality, such that no matter what they do in the future, they'll always continue to blow it.

on a related note, i was listening to doug stanhope on XM yesterday and he mentioned how much of a let-down sports can be, even if your team wins. being from new england, he had a pretty good year in sports a few years back - but, the next day, you wake up, and your job still sucks, your kids still hate you, your credit cards keep calling you, and your car still doesn't work quite right.

it somehow made me feel better.

Between Crisp and Ellsbury the Sox will be fine. The last thing they need is another fucking 75 million dollar mistake like the new jesus freak in right field.

I agree. I was emailing with the mild one a ways back, and figured out that around mid-August the Sox were paying something like 4 million dollars for every point of improvement in OPS that Drew offered above Nixon. Pretty good deal, huh?

OK...for those familiar with Fenway park...how does the SRO seating work? Ive got 2 SRO seats for tonights game. I generally only do box seats or day game bleachers so I dont have any idea what its all about (thats why I only go to 2 or 3 games a year while I live 200 feet from the park). Ive done the Pavilion SRO seats and those arent bad.
Do you think its out of the realm of possibility that I try and get up to the pavilion SRO seats by sliding the usher a 20? I mean, its usually a 23 year old college student checking the tickets- he could use the cash. Would 20 suffice for me and my gf? 40 bucks? Would he tell on me and I get kicked out?

Dude, it's fenway, you can just go stand in the pavilion. If the usher blocks you $40 should work.

Theyve got an usher pretty much checking tickets when you go upstairs to make sure you have PAV tickets. Im thinking 40 should do it though...sorta discretely.

True, but I've snuck up there before, without too much of an issue. But that was during the regular season, playoffs are a different story.

P;layoffs may be a little different...but they sell out every game anyway, so its not like capacity will make the ushers act any differently.

SRO is technically right behind the last row of the infield grandstands. They've opened it up a little bit and added some more space to stand, but it's still kind of tight.

personally i like crisp, not an outstanding leadoff hitter, but he lays it on the line in the outfield.

I'm not giving up on coco, he is young, plays defense well, has speed, can be streaky at the plate, but I still like him, plus we have Hinske & Elsbury for young guys to play OF.
