Love seeing the influx of new breweries over the last 10 years, but I just don't know why all of them can't make beer that is better than it is. I feel when I go to other places with a big beer scene, every brewery is a level up on what we have here it seems.
I actually side with Red Rocks on that one. It would be nice to get full-strength IPAs/beers on draft and not have the 5% limit on grocery store beers. That was their whole point when that came out, "let's not go half way, let's just go all the way." typical utah state legislature bs. The beer industry forced that change anyways as the market for 3.2% beer was drying up as more states got rid of those rules.Quote:

IMO Red Rocks ranks up there with one of the best breweries in Utah. I'd also put Templin, Level Crossing and Fisher up there. But I think there are a lot of good breweries to choose from these days in Utah. We still have some pretty high costs for beer in this state, which is why Elphino and Sprial Jetty are usually my go-tos. Hard to pay $20ish dollars for a 6-pack even if its a 16oz sixer.
I believe that argument was the guise, and their larger concern was losing tap and shelf space to out of state breweries in bars and grocery stores, which I believe happened to a small extent (read: sierra on draft, larger selection of CO/PNW beers in the grocery store). Both of these ARE valid points in my opinion. As is the argument that you have to buy a large qty of a high point beer in a bar, (22oz 10% stout for example) where if it was on draft, the portion could be regulated to 5/8oz pours.
Bitchtickets aside, Chappell/Saltfire are collabing on a Krampus walk Saturday night. Debating heading to that, could be fun!

Red Rock beers have been a few decade staple and I’ll still drink em, just not on site.
As someone who came to this town as a snot nosed kid from the Midwest in ‘85 and hadn’t yet found his drinking game, but joined “that house where the Gamma Rays played often” and had a 3 tap chiller pouring something continuously, mostly Coors Light, all through college, I like to say - I’m no connoisseur, just a sewer who appreciates all attempts of the brewing craft!

Totally agree Fraulein. The Utah brewery scene has greatly improved, just in my 6 year tenure living here. Even O-Town has progressed, but aside from Talisman and a few of Rooster's newer offerings the SLC scene is still heads & tails better.
Went to Prohibition for our 28th anniversary on Saturday night. It’s a dinner theater kind of thing, was a fifties/flapper show. We were a bit a ways from the aisle they came out so the show was pretty much lost on us.
Wife got the pear gorgonzola salad and I got the french onion soup. Salad was delicious, soup wasn’t bad but swiss cheese instead of gruyere was disappointing.

Brisket tacos were on point, the morsels of meat were tender and flavorable, the habanero sauce added just enough heat.

The chicken pasta was done well. Perfectly al dente with a good sized portion of well seasoned chicken.

The beignets were a fine ending, the berry jalapeno dipping sauce was tasty and the beignets were fried perfectly.

It was a lot more than we ever spend going out but all in all it was pretty good. I’d recommend getting a table in the middle.

I was going to post some self masturbating shit in the gun control thread but instead we went to a new to us place near our house. Papito Moes, a Puerto Rican place that’s been on triple D. I’m usually pretty ambivalent on Guy, but he does point out some good restaurants and in this case he was correct.
The place is pretty small, not many tables and eating in could be problematic. Put in your order at the counter, a small fridge with some Puerto Rican beverages is the only drinks so grab something before you order.
The cuisine is close to Caribbean with a Mexican flare. The empanadas were delicious, rice was nicely seasoned, and the plantains (both sweet and savory) were a change from our usual fare. The prices were more than fair, we left with full bellies for not much cash.
I’ll definitely be back to try the M’fongo and flan.

As always, the biggest ups to Bombay Foods for coming in clutch with fresh fenugreek leaves. They also started selling usable quantities of whole spices packaged under their own label.
Does anyone have other solid spots for whole spices? I am specifically looking for ceylon cinnamon sticks, I have been warned against Qaderi by one of the Bangladeshi mothers at the library.
Also, not surprisingly Chez Nibs makes the best chocolate truffle/bonbon we have tried in SLC.

Having been to Saola behind Courtyard/Eight Settler’s near mouth of BCC twice in the past 2 weeks, can confirm great quality Asian influenced food - Pho, Noodles, Fried Rices, Fresh Fish, Sushi, etc. Pricey but huge portions. Great leftovers. Definitely a finer dining experience when compared to Porcupine and even 8Setts.
Note: Google maps defines as Pho Tin Vietnamese Noodle Lounge - which may be their lunch-oriented menu as I understand the menu may be limited for lunch.

I agree MakanMakan has become one of my favorite restaurants since DTM made the suggestion. So many good dishes, but the Spicy Fried Chicken may be my favorite. So spicy yet so good!
