Back on topic: It's been pretty cold lately.
It'll get warmer later
This weekend looks warm.
and then it will get cold again. and there will be snow.
I'll put this here and in the Loveland thread for those that care.
An overview of Aspen Highland avalanche mitigation program in the bowl. It is expensive and effective.

Meanwhile back at the ranch...

A little meadow skippy stoke from Sunday in the IPW. Still pretty thin, but manageable.
It's cold and icy out there. Invasion of the gapers in Summit.
Although the pattern is looking more dry than it has been, keep this map in mind

always good to see those colors...
rode the lift up pano yesterday at maryjane with couple trollers. they got a roller last year only only used a bit, said this year already using and got a long distance view of the cat and roller on the cirque from EW lift. they said it was working great and already bombing the letter chutes this year.
They were to get this roller couple years ago but guess monarch was ahead of them.
^ Sweet. Fingers crossed some ropes drop soon.
Some other Cirque questions, to anyone who knows the history, were Shadow & Jelly Roll ever open before they permanently closed that section off? Heard conflicting reports....wonder what led to the decision to say "screw it" and stop trying. Short pitch, but like everything on the cirque, surprisingly steep and wind loaded. I'm sure they still count that terrain as "skiable acreage" ;)
More later but let's just say that the Cirque got skied a lot before it was ever open and the red coats you rode the lift with could have been part of that crowd.
edit: ok, so a lot of the Cirque history is going to depend on who you ask. I believe the Cirque "opened" in 97-98. For the first few years, the biggest chances was that it could be "closed" because it was in the ski area boundry.
rewind: before the Pano, you could legally ski the cirque be existing the FS gate which was a hike of the top of the Timberline. What was illegal, was skipping the hike and ducking the permanent closure. You could usually get away with it if you skiing backside Parsenn's. What was high profile was skiing the Cirque.
There was one very high profile event involving some notorious locals, over zealous patrollers and the sheriffs that got totally out of hand. The cops were pressuring some of the good guy redcoats who were friends with the banditos to turn them in etc. The pigs were coming in the Pub "looking for people" who were there but they didn't know who they were looking for. It was totally ridiculous.
so: my opinion is that the above even led to a decade of Cirque management that emphasized keeping it closed. My having a buffer of "ski area" that was basically permanently closed. Legal access through the FS gate was basically denied.
Fast forward to when the Pano when in. There was fresh blood on Patrol and the FS gates was relocated to it's current location which basically allows access into Zero Creek and points beyond as long as the lift is open.
Yes, Jelly & Shadow used to be open. The official reason for the closure has to do with the difficulty of patrol egress but that terrain can be access my other means from other locations besides the lift.
So really what you've got in terms of "no go" areas these days are the permanent Cirque closures, Zero Creek rope duck & Better Not/Why Not.
In my opinion, true lift service in the Cirque would be the expansion to skiing that Wanker Park needs. Management has a history around using FS "restrictions" as justifications to not spend money. We will see.
Straight up -40 in Tabernash is AM. I'm pretty sure that's were the thermometer pegs. Double digit above zero in the mountains already. #thermocline. I'd go skiing if the truck would start.
wasn't cold at all at the resort (not that we got an early start).
Foggy, thanks for the debrief. Interesting for sure.
